At around 27:00 when you were describing how you’d translate stories to learn a new language, would you you translate the story from a language you know into one you don’t know, or would you translate it from a language you don’t know into one you know? I know this is an old video but I’d really like to learn this method!

Thanks for the comment, and the idea here is to take a story online (an article, a book page or anything of that sort), and then to read it and translate word per word everything you do not know yet. Considering you don't know anything of the language yet, you'd have to translate every single word. Example: "J'ai mangé une pomme, elle était excellente" If you translate the whole sentence, it's gonna be like "I ate an apple, it was excellent" Now, if further you see "J'ai joué au football, j'étais excellent" and had focused on word per word translation since the beginning, you would've already been able to tell that the second part of the first sentence did not mean that it was excellent to eat an apple but that SHE (the apple, feminine) was excellent to eat. And in the first part of the second sentence, you would've known that J' is subject, a contraction of "Je" that means "I", so you could guess that "J'étais excellent" meant "I was excellent", without even needing to translate it at all. Since you found out yourself, you are going to feel proud and happy of the results, instead of just being in the mindset "okay, I need to remember" (which doesn't work at all). When you see repetition of words in a foreign language, your brain will remember it. And if you forget a word, even better, you will only need to translate it again to remember it for even longer. Therefore, if you do this everyday, you are will at first need to translate word per word, and it's gonna be so annoying to go back and forth to translate every single piece of information that your brain won't forget two times (trust me, it is true). After a month, you'll still need to translate a word on five, and then after three months, a word on twenty. The progress is going to be satisfying, and that's what we want. Every single time you won't need to translate a word, you are going to be proud of yourself, and your brain won't forget anything. This ofc works with youtube videos aswell, at every sentence just pause the video and translate every single word. It's so annoying that you'll need to pause every 10 seconds in the first week, then 30 in the next month, etc, etc.
