I still grimace as I remember the pain of my very first shot with my newly acquired recurve bow, as well as the rainbow hues of the bruise that lasted several days after. Not only did I use a bracer after that, it improved by form by quite a bit. Thanks for the excellent lesson.

Making my first bracer soon. Have collected the eyelets from am old pair of KEEN shoes that seem to fit the need. I drilled out the rivets and have 16 although I'll only need half that.

Nice, I will need that. Until now I have been avoiding slap because my bows have big brace height but longbows is another thing.
@MickGrewcock7 жыл бұрын
+Harald Bearclaw I mostly avoid on longbows by getting the brace height around 6" plus dropping my wrist a little. But then, unexpectedly, SLAP! So I wear a bracer as a matter of course. Thanks for watching. Mick

It's very possible that I'm dumb, but how do you lace your bracer like that? I've been trying to figure it out, but I'm stumped. I love the way it looks and really want to utilize it, but I'm having a hard time understanding it.

Marvelous video as always Mick. But did you seriously slap your own wrist with a bowstring just to demonstrate the need for a bracer? That's dedication. I remember the first time I shot my recurve bow. The string smacked just inside my elbow. Not only did it hurt like the dickens, it was blue, purple, and yellow for over a week. The memory of the pain still reminds me to position my arm correctly when I shoot, but I may try a simple bracer like this. Cheers!

nice, but do you really think it needs metal grommets in the lace holes? Seems the loads are not high on it, and it would add some friction to the lacing, eliminating any need to tie a knot.
@MickGrewcock7 жыл бұрын
No, grommets not really required - but I rather like them because they look good!

Just a slap? When I was young and stupid I was doing reps with a slow draw, 30 second hold and slow let down, using an improvised harness and no bracer. When the harness failed at full draw, the bow flew across the room and bounced off the wall, the string gave me a blood blister the size of a bisected aubergine and about the same colour. That evening was spent sitting in front of an open fridge with a packet of frozen peas held to the arm and an adequate supply of cold beer and more frozen peas to hand. I still have a faint scar... :-).

Ouch indeed Rod. My worst was my first - just from a 40lb laminate that I kept using all afternoon and came home with deep purple weald from inner elbow to wrist. Learned my lesson that day. It tends to happen now when I don't think about it and get sloppy.

Hello Big Mick how are you? I realize I subscribed to you long after your first vids, just curious are you Irish and how did you get into classic bows? or maybe the better question is why classic bows over modern carbon fiber alloy compound contraptions? peace
@MickGrewcock7 жыл бұрын
Hi Ray, good thanks! No I'm not Irish, I guess I'm English - though we are all a mixture of those who came before!! I grew up with the stories of Agincourt and Crecy, which are of course known as archery 'victories' over the French and so achieved great prominence in our history lessons. Wasn't interested in that (I love France and the French!) but since then I have held the English longbow in awe. When I had time to explore history a bit I realised that the heritage of the longbow is still alive and well in the UK and that there are many people making long bows. So when I made my first bow I found that my interest veered straight off the track to the medieval longbow that was such a big part of those history lessons. Modern contraptions with wheels and such like, or bows made from synthetics leave me stone cold! It's just one of my interests but there is something almost spiritual about taking a piece of hedge wood and making from it a bow, a real link to our shared past I guess. As to the bracer, I don't know whether they are worn by archers using these modern devices - i just like the look and feel of them and of course they do offer protection. The bows I use are as near to 14th/15th Century military power as my 62 years can manage to pull - and the string from one of those can give a mighty whack on the arm and a very, very nasty bruise!

I need advice, how do you clean or protect the leather from sweat? thanks
@MickGrewcock5 жыл бұрын
I keep leather treated with a variety of leather preservers. I do this before using the item/s. This builds a layer that seals the leather from sweat and other stains.

Fact dump time! Arm slap from high powered bows can actually be fatal, if the bruising leads to blood clots in a major artery. These clots can then shift and cause a serious embolism. It's rare, but it's happened. Arm protection is VERY important! Proper tuning your equipment is needed to never hit your arm, in addition to good technique. A bow that vibrates too much, a bow with twisted limbs, a string that's too short, or too stretchy, can all cause arm slap in addition to poor technique. So everyone take care of their gear!

i wont tell you that your stand is wrong, because i don't know. However i do know my stand, keep yourself straight up and down, don't lean forward and keep your arm a little bent. I have only gotten a string slap 2 times in 3 years doing this. It is also a lot easier to hit shots if you are shooting at a target, which i mainly am.
@MickGrewcock7 жыл бұрын
+SuperScience894 Thank you. Of course, that 'slap' on the video was suggested rather than being actual - but I do get them now and then. Thanks for watching.

You need to calm down. First of all I "advised" something else. I clearly said how I do it and how it works for me. Also what's the deal with you and always pointing out how others (especially me) don't know things as good as you. Honestly stop it, as I said the last time you sound unprofessional when you make comments like this. Please watch what you write because it can back fire on you. I am not trying to make enemies here I was giving constructive advice and self experience. A bow is a survival tool to some extent. Would you call a perfectly made 120 lbs yew warbow with war arrows and bodkin tips a survival tool? Mic, you are great with hand tools and leather working, as well as filming, but I have a question, where can you find good yew In nature? I have only 3 bushes but they are bushes and only 1 m tall.
