I have not found the perfect boot. They're always too stiff and I literally cannot break them in. Also having an ankle full of titanium nuts and bolts and screws and bars, I cannot stand for anything to be up around my ankle or banging into it from below. So I wear a regular pair of sketchers that make my feet feel great. I can walk a long way in them. But they are absolutely no protection from anything falling on my toes, and my feet get soaking wet if I step in water. Still, it's the best I can do.

I use a tooth brush to scrub in the boot oil. It gets it into all the seams and hard to reach areas. As a retired forester, I’ve worn a lot of leather boots.

Oh, and when you buy one of those pairs, a pair gets donated to an actual African ranger

I'm also a fan of Jim Green footwear, having bought three different boots. If there's a characteristic weak point in them, it would have to be a relative crudeness in the insoles. Don't expect any degree of sponginess -- they will conform to your foot, but any softening will be supplied by your socks and the outsole. And speaking of those, some outsoles are harder, like their vibram style lug sole, and others are softer, like their gum soles. These last can be prone to transverse cracking under certain conditions, though they do wear well otherwise. Otherwise, workmanship and materials are good.

Those look like a shorter version of my Barefoot African Trooper Boot. I recognized Jim Green's design as soon as I saw them. You are correct, great brand and great toe room ! 👍👍

Same. I own a few pairs of sandals because of that specific thing. However, sandals suck in the snow.😅😂

Have to agree with you on that. Doesn’t mean I haven’t worn them on the snow

I love my Jim Greens. Handmade boots for a great price. I have the logger boot, and the original version of those with a slightly thicker sole. Pretty sure the barefoot ones were styled with help from Rose Anvil.

Like the boots, prefer neatsfoot oil over mink oil when I want leather to breathe, but mink oil for water proofing. I spray the inside of the boots with Lysol regularly to prevent fungus and mold.

In recent years I've taken to using a heat gun or hair drier to heat my leather boots after cleaning then applying boot grease then keep running the heat gun on the greased up boot that seems to soak the grease into the leather. Seems to work for me however I'm not in the backcountry as much as I used to be due to old age and old injuries. In the 1970's I was in the Marines then worked as a Wilderness guard for the Forest Service for a couple seasons living out of my pack in Wilderness areas in the Pacific Northwest. I used heavy leather "logging boots" A couple of times due to forecast of heavy rain and snow. Like walking chained to a boat anchor. I dug out my Vietnam era Jungle boots and used them combined with wool socks even in light snow conditions and never had a problem. I use River Sandals now as slippers and around the house because of the covered toe. Having used flip flops in the past and having a stick jump up and poke a hole in my foot between my toes head-on I decided to to change my foot fashion. Sandals in snow work great for me because I just turn around and go back in the house.

After a while, do an update on how well the paracord holds tight on your boots when you tie them. Paracord knots can loosen a bit I notice. For footwear support, I may question its consistent tight knot.

Have you tried looking at Altama's or the Go Ruck Mac-v Sog? Kinda designed like the Jungle boot used in Vietnam. Leather was used, but they were in swamps all the time, then they used rubber I think to make them waterproof, which wouldn't let them drain. So they created a boot with drainage/air holes at the bottom to drain and dry. Both Altama and the Go Ruck use the drainage hole concept. Altamas were actually made to attack to fins for sea to land missions, soldiers could drop fins and keep going. Both boots also have wide toe box. MacV Sogs I believe are zero drop. Unfortunately both are made with modern materials, can't be re-soled, so idk how long they'll last. The MacV Sog is made as a rucking boot though. But I love my Jim Greens, have had both pairs over a year, the Ranger and the Baobab. And I love my Nick's 10in builder pro. My Georgia Boot Company's "Romeo's" are my "dress" shoes
@robertphillips935 күн бұрын
The Mac-V Sog has a more shock-absorbing insole than the Jim Green boot, but a less generous toe box. My JG Razorbacks are great for roominess but benefit greatly from an aftermarket insole for long periods of use.

"sheath or jacket" on the paracord, yeah? Picked up a pair of the exact same Jim Green Ranger boots, about a year ago. They are absolutely amazing! I also popped on a pair of Jim Green "trooper" boots, through Rose Anvil! They are equal fit and finish! Just 9-eye. I cannot understand, why we are un willing or unable to manufacture boots of this quality, in the USA.

I can’t either. Good to know they’re still treating you well after a year

This is the type of boot I need! I used to wear Gortex, I’ve learned not to like Gortex in any form. My feet are not in very good shape. Years of working on concrete did a number on them. I require a wide shoe/ boot and I add copper insoles. My left foot has a really bad bunion. Twenty /thirty years ago I used to wear a full boot. But for the last several years I only like ankle or above ankle high boots. Don’t wear any type of insulated boot . For Snow I have a pair of military canvas mullouks with felt liner. The boots and shoes I wear are combination leather and mesh. Just can’t wear full leather cause to uncomfortable. Now that I’ve given you the history of my feet😆, where can I get these Jim Green boots? Are you waiting til you have tested them more? Looking forward to a update down the road, thanks Jason

I will wait till I have worn them for about a year before I give my stamp of approval.
