The only time he ever puts up this front is around people to ensure that he holds his position of power. Everything he did was to stay in power and never have others attack. Yes it was to keep himself safe, and yes he probably did get some enjoyment from it, but it was for his people. He genuinely cared for Carl, as well as any child. He wasn't a "demon" he was a flawed individual that did horrible things to survive. If we are taking tally of sins Rick is FAR worse than Negan is but he gets a pass because he's the MC. Dwight did it to himself as he had a chance to join the main cast earlier but he decided to run and got caught in with the Saviors. And his wife chose to he lazy and not want to work for her living, she chose to whore herself out to Negan in exchange of not having to do any manual labor, she had a choice Negan doesn't rape. He is scummy by taking advantage but he never forced anyone to do anything. They chose their choices. Sherry could've got off her ass and work but she chose to be a wife of Negan so she had options. She chose poorly, she abandoned Dwight, and fled.

This scene isn’t just Negan being Negan. It really underscores here that even though he’s apprehensive and has hatred for Negan, the words exchanged made him change his perspective. He realized Negan was and could have been far worse, and chose to only do what he say as “required”Carl grew up in the fall, he saw his father do heinous things to survive, Negans words had shown Carl that he’s while he’s also done heinous things, that he’s not too far gone like his father. Leading to Carl adamantly pushing Rick and him toward peace.

It’s almost insane how much younger Jeffrey looks when he debuted at the end of season six and throughout season seven. From season eight to present, you really get to see him age especially in the face and hairline. I know they did a big time jump on the show and it’s really cool that they pay attention to detail and tone down his young guy make up that I’m sure they used at the beginning but I mean even in interviews back in 2015/16 Negan was this fly, charismatic, handsome Devil! They made him too needle-y on the show. In the comic, he was a total asshole, but he didn’t actively try to upset others just cause. There was always a reason beyond asserting control. It made it easier to root for Negan once he wasn’t an antagonist anymore. In the show, it’s wild that they were ever able to work with him.
