मारीस्श को आर्थिक रूप से सबल बनाने में और मारीस्श के जन मानस राजनैतिक चेतना जगाने मे भारत के बिहार और रुपी के प्रवासी भारतीयों का बहुत बड़ा योगदान है जिनको आज से लगभग 200 वर्ष पहले बिहार और यूपी के मजदूरों को गन्ने की खेत मे काम करने के लिए अंग्रेज ने भारत से मारीस्श मे बसाया था उन्हीं के वंशज आज भी मारीस्श मे अपने धर्म , संस्कार और परम्परा को संजोए हुए है बहुत अच्छा लगा आपके ब्लॉग।

Bhai saab , thanks for showing my home country. The comment that Mauritius feels empty is very true. I have seen it written in European guide books. I think it feels that way because of the small population size (1.2 million), the high level of urbanisation (beyond the official cities, there are big towns which are administratively labelled as villages). I think it also has to do with the island's history as a colonial plantation economy where most people lived in tiny villages scattered over huge plantations. The remnants of these huge plantations is what gives that empty feeling. Since people in Mauritius people can live in their native villages and commute to cities for education or job there is no big pressure for people to live in one big city. People tend to live for several generations in the same place. Over time, the populations demographics have slowly changed but the electoral districts have remained almost the same since independence. So now a much smaller and quite 'empty' rural areas send a larger number of MPs to the parliament, in effect deciding who forms a government. Like in Japan, this has ensured that the government invests heavily in the rural areas. Will it change in the future ? Not much of chance because of the small size of the country, there is not much of a cultural divide between the city and the rural areas. So Mauritius will still feel empty in the future because it is just an old colonial setup which is frozen in time.

Mauritius is beautiful. But it is sad current generations lack of knowledge in Hindi. Fiji Indians in turn speak their version of Hindi called Creole Hindi but they do speak which indicates they have a sense of history and roots. Mauritius seems like stuck in Colonial era where English speaking ability is perhaps seen has road to success but the downside would be lack of knowledge in culture, tradition and roots.

@@rishi_6266 Most Mauritians speak Creole which is a French dialect. Most Indians have passive fluency in Hindi which means they can understand it but can't speak it. Hindi / Urdu is taught as a compulsory subject in primary school for north indians. Their ancestors came from the Bhojpuri Purvanchal region about 130 years back. They still widely spoke Bhopuri till the 5th generation. Bhojpuri was the spoken language while Hindi was the prestige dialect. My first language as a child was Bhojpuri. On TV and radio the north indian programmes were in Hindi. For example the news will be in Hindi and my grandma will be lamenting in Bhojpuri that her people are dying off in road accidents. Then she will be annoyed when the TV programme switched from Hindi to Tamil. Time for her to take a walk :)
