I'm from England and I am so baffled by the comments that disagree with you. One of the best parts of being English is having our NHS and free healthcare, I cannot even fathom living in a country without it. Surely any steps the USA are taking to implement a better healthcare system is positive?

Obamacare isn't free though, nor is it an improvement. When they opened the enrollment period, a lot of people were removed from their previous plans, despite being told that they could keep them. The entire system relies on young people, the very people that watch this channel, to foot the bill for older people. Before Obamacare came into play, my insurance covered a lot of things, including all of my medications. Now, I'm lucky if I can get them to cover my diabetes medicine.

AwksFox No healthcare program is free. The English pay for it in taxes, just like with the affordable care act. Which reminds me. You republicans thought it was the bees knees whin Romney Wrote it ( www.forbes.com/sites/aroy/2011/10/11/how-mitt-romneys-health-care-experts-helped-design-obamacare/ ) but when Obama enacted it, sudenly it's the worst thing since sliced dolphin. Also, it's the old and young who are causing rates to increase under the affordable care act. Middle aged people rarley have as many health issues as babies, college students and the elderly. Now, I know as a troll you were expecting to be able to just suck the life out of people instead of actualy contributing to the sight. But luckily, having the life sucked out of you by morons is covered.

" Surely any steps the USA are taking to implement a better healthcare system is positive?" Georgia, there were hundreds of things the USA could have done and many states were already doing. Remember, the USA is 50 individual states, not unlike Europe's commonwealth/Union. To say what works in Norway also works in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece and the UK is a falsehood. The same goes for the USA... The system that is now in place is Massachusetts', but it was failing there and the one in place in Utah was working well. And there are several very affordable systems ($30 a month, unlimited service, house calls, for the whole family) that now won't work because the ACA outlaws them.

Being Australian, I don't know what 99% of us would do if we didn't have government healthcare (medicare), there would be so many more stressors in our lives. For example, last year, my mum was suffering from an undiagnosed disorder due to an inability to find conclusive evidence of any specific disease or condition. This meant we had countless trips to the hospital. All of which we didn't have to worry about covering with private health insurance after we had to leave. All we do is show our medicare card/details and it's taken from there. That experience alone, trying to help my mum with the pain and torment she was in was terrifying and stressful enough, without having to then worry if we had private health insurance. So at least be thankful that someone is trying to help the masses in the U.S with affordable healthcare. It works here in Australia, where would be devastating without it.

I'm a Canadian fan, and all I can say is I don't know what I would do without our health care system. I've seen the prices for some (what I would call minor) treatments in America, and its crazy what you have to pay out of pocket. I think everyone should be able to get some form of healthcare no matter their status, and shouldn't be turned down because they can't afford it. Keep doing what your doing Hannah! :)

@TimothyCHenderson 10 жыл бұрын
RileyZoid Really? it's nothing like universal health care in other parts of the world, that's why it's called the "affordable care act". From what I've gathered, it gives you access to a breadth of insurance plans from different providers from which you can choose and holds insurance company's accountable for their increases, withdrawals and limitations. Fortunately for you, you still get to pay :).

Umm well Ned, in our countries where we have public healthcare, we pay through the taxes. So it's not like it's cheaper for us. But Americans just doesn't wanna pay more taxes I guess, so a good solution is this program :) we do have to pay for it as well!!
@ninninin656

How do you think other developed nations finance the universal healthcare? Through taxes OR obligatory insurance. Germany, the country who basically INVENTED the social insurance system, has done "forced" insurance for decades, and we have a great, advanced, safe health system that NO ONE minds paying for! Public health care CANNOT be free, SOMEONE always pays for it. Just like SOMEONE needs to pay for your pretty roads, the police protecting you, etc. etc. etc.

lepair27 What I meant was that there are still a lot of restrictions on the subject. It can only be done under certain circumstances depending on the state, and it just seems very complicated, especially with all the pro-life groups that for some reason are incredibly invested in other people's decisions. In Ontario, abortion is covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan).

As a european who has repeatedly enjoyed the benefits of national healthcare, to the point that I'm likely alive because of it - plus I have several family members who'd likely be just as worse off, including one who's currently in what I think is her tenth year of cancer treatment (darn stuff keeps coming back) - then I can very much say national healthcare is a good thing. I base this on a very simple, objective fact: If not the fact my family hasn't had to pay for it directly, then said cancer patient family member wouldn't have been able to afford said treatment. Not on a cop and kindergarden teacher's salary. Its a question of bargaining power versus the pharmaceutical companies who'd love nothing more than to jack up prices, about economy of scale, and the fact that when you have millions paying to the same single-payer insurance, then the individual payment becomes very small and much more manageable.

That's one of the main differences in the US vs most other places, meds/treatments can cost absurdly more here. A MRI here can cost up to 1,500, vs the same thing in France costing just 280 usd. That is a HUGE difference and part of the reason why our healthcare is so out of whack over here. .

We have some of the highest taxes in the world, and is apparently one of the happiest people on the earth. Just a fact ;) ) it is really hard to understand why Americans have such a big problem with this!? To me it seems ridiculous that you would rather go without healthcare!?? I mean, why? I can go to the doctor everyday if I have to, and not pay a single dollar. It's already been paid for. How can you not want that? :)
@kribusjoe
@kribusjoe 10 жыл бұрын
Yelpet MC yes that's kinda true. You did pay for it yourself as well as everybody else. If you look at it like you do (you haven't paid for it, somebody else has), if you turn that upside down then nobody has paid for when they go to the doctor! That's a win ;) I personally think it's a great way to have healthcare. Everybody goes to the doctor once in a while, so it's not like some people doesn't get anything out of it. And since we pay over the taxes, we don't even notice paying for it, so it actually feels like its free! :)
@kribusjoe
@kribusjoe 10 жыл бұрын
Yelpet MC of course I'd reply in a polite and civilized manner ;) I know there's a huge difference in the way we see things like this, so no need to get nasty :) I'm just trying to point out, that it might not be as bad as all (those against it) think it is. We are a lot who have forced healthcare, and are very happy to have it! And yes, I know it's not working the same way as yours, and there is bound to be problems at first with such a huge thing being changed.. those kinda changes takes time for people to figure out, and for the government to come up with the right solution. I know it's nothing to do with me, but I'm just being happy for you guys, that at least some first steps are being taken here. Hopefully it will end up with something really great! :)

I will need health insurance for the rest of my life. 10 years ago if I tried to get health insurance no company would approve me for coverage or if they did they would charge me an insane amount. That because of the way information flows in the US some people are led to believe that it will cost them (not JUST individually but as a country) MORE to have national healthcare coverage. They are completely missing the just fact that the US Government spend more on healthcare than it does on defense and STILL the cost for the individual of ANY procedure done in the US is greater than that of Canada, the UK, France and my home of Sweden. Or rather, it is not that they are missing the point, it is the fact that people are bending statistics in order to "Educate" people in favor of a very right-wing cause. But what do I know, I'm Swedish and we are basically Communists.

It's also worth remembering that the US spends more per capita on public heathcare (plans such as Medicare) than many other Western countries (such as the UK) - despite providing it only to a small fraction of their population. Which is kind of crazy. Disclaimer: I'm from the UK and I love my 'free' healthcare. Although prescription charges are apparently going up to £7.95 next month, which I'm not that happy about.

Because it doesn't do much to attack the root of the problem: the cost of healthcare. Sure people now have access to healthcare coverage (insurance) but the cost of treatment is still through the roof. It's a small step in the right direction, but no where close to the reform we need.

It still shocks me that America doesn't have an equivalent of the NHS (British healthcare, we don't have to worry about paying for it separately, it just comes out of the tax we pay). Yeah, people complain about the NHS, but I think its a good system. If something happens, and we need an emergancy operation, we either already paid, or will pay for it over the course of our working life. Why can't america see how much of a good thing that is. You hear about people who have had emergency operations or medical care, but haven't had health insurance so had to pay tons. Woudn't Obamacare make that so much easier to deal with??

Well because it's not actually cheaper healthcare for most of us. The cost of healthcare isn't changing at all. For some the cost of coverage (insurance) is going down. However, most young, healthy adults are still barely able to afford the insurance plans that are available through ACA. Cost of healthcare and cost of insurance are two different things, both of which are still expensive right now.

It has always surprised me that a nation like the USA have never implemented a basic 'free' healthcare system. As others have noted, in the UK, our NHS system is not perfect, but provides as least a minimum level of care for all who need it and those who want a more efficient medical service will choose to pay for private care. Technically we do pay for it, but it is built into our citizen tax so it's not an issue and i've always wondered why the US doesn't do the same? (Sorry, I guess I'm not that clued up on your system). Yes - some people abuse the privilege of having free health care but with more and more people with medical problems, it's becoming an increasingly necessary service.
@liquidpjear
@liquidpjear 10 жыл бұрын
Mainly because the government involvement will drive up prices while reducing the quality of care. Not to mention the additional financial penalty, on people like me, who can no longer afford health insurance because the ACA has driven the prices through the roof. What would be your response to people that had medical insurance for over a decade on the private system that can no longer afford insurance now thanks to the affordable care act?
@alexxx373
@alexxx373 10 жыл бұрын
Secksi My comment was merely an observation, not a criticism - hence I have no response or recommendation to the issue. I am well aware that it is difficult to change well established systems, but that is why I am surprised it is only now that they want to do it, not from the beginning. But as I have already said, I don't know that much about the American system.
@forgotn42
@forgotn42 10 жыл бұрын
Secksi You do realize that your arguments ar enullified when compared to the NHS of the UK, right? Costs in the UK, where the government is involved, are far, far lower than here in the states. Their quality of care is also about on par with ours. The exorbitant prices that we pay here in the US do not equate to better health care. The equate to the same quality of healthcare as most places, just for a fuckload more money per month/procedure.

Because we've been kicked off our existing healthcare plans that we were perfectly happy with. Add that to the fact that our hospitals are bogged down dealing with illegal immigrants who don't pay anything into the system and only exist to suck our resources dry. Obamacare is nothing more than a ponzi scheme to extort working class white people into paying the healthcare costs for non-white loafers.

AlbanianMan and your point is? in the UK we have to deal with the exact same thing, and so does every other country providing free healthcare, i would also like you to bear in mind that what you just said is quite racist and that a unified healthcare system across hospitals is far superior to individual privatised hospitals. Hell over here the NHS is BETTER that private healthcare!

As an Australian I can say that affordable health care is super important, I have my own private insurance around $120 a month covers me for all hospital admissions, ambulances, dental, optical and a range of extras such as psychology and chiropractic (and lots more) I also get the national medicare coverage which lowers the cost for gp visits including blood tests, prescriptions, skin cancer checks and just about anything done by a gp. My government gives us tax breaks for having health insurance below certain income levels because it lowers the demand on the public system and then gives everyone a better access to care.

So, before the affordable care act, I was paying about $34 a month for my meds ( I'll PM if you really want to know for what ) and I was getting it rather easily because my insurance was covering about $230 of it. However, after the Affordable Care act the business that was providing it, could not afford to continue paying for each of it's employees, so they dropped anyone that wasn't above a manager (unless you do runs, in which case it would be illegal because you are at risk because of the work). So, I had to sign up for HealthCare provided by the govt. And because it isn't universal, but instead for people without private, I wasn't getting the premium quality insurance I was before. The govt. now pays for $25 a month, and Im stuck paying $270. I'm not saying that govt. healthcare isn't efficient, but it isn't in my case.

chickensarecool01 Why would a young, healthy person have no logical reason to sign up for health insurance through the ACA? That would've been really nice in 2011 when insurance through my job was over $700 a month for just myself as a single person, so I opted out and then had to have an appendectomy. I am now over $20k in medical bill debt because there was no affordable option for me at the time. The fact of the matter is, young and healthy means nothing. In the blink of an eye, any one of us can be faced with crippling medical bankruptcy simply because of that one time we really didn't want to die.

about the ACA, there are some points I completely agree with, some I absolutely do not agree with and some things that could really be looked at either way, depending on your personal situation. Having said that, everyone is entitled to their opinion. That's part of being a proud American,,the right to free speech. It's completely your right to like or hate anything our government does as much as you damn well please. The people who want to turn everything into an "us vs. them" situation suck, period. If the haters want to run their mouths(or keyboards, touch screens, etc) and unsubscribe, to hell with them. They can go make love to themselves. Keep doing what you do, Hannah.

I'm still trying to figure it all out but I think some people believe that "Obamacare" is a program that are required to sign up for and pay for and use with no options. If you want or need milk, and The Milk Store opens up on the corner, you don't HAVE to use The Milk Store, but if you don't get milk somewhere (still an option), you might not like the outcome.
@liquidpjear
@liquidpjear 10 жыл бұрын
The problem with your analogy is the milk store doesn't charge you 2.5% of your income or $695 a year if you don't buy milk.

1. The max charge for not getting health insurance for an individual is less than $100 the first year. FACT. 2. If you break the law (don't get health insurance... or in this analogy milk) you have to pay a fine. Just like you have to pay when you speed, or break any other laws. FACT

Elizabeth Berg Are you purposefully ignoring that the numbers I posted are what the continuing mandate calls for? I realize they reduced the first year impact to help reduce the numbers of voters scared off by the impact of the fine. Also you don't see the problem with the government essentially pricing people out of the insurance market and then charging me money because they did it? I had insurance my entire adult life until my rates more than tripled thanks to the ACA. Now I can't afford decent insurance and in the last two weeks I have had to pay $1200 for routine doctors visits and lab work. To add insult to injury the government wants to FINE me for doing me this great service.
@MsEmberg
@MsEmberg 10 жыл бұрын
Secksi The rates at the company you were with may have tripled but I do not believe they have tripled with all providers you could use. I am not sure what you mean by they want to fine you? If you have insurance you won't be fined. I am not sure if your anyone ever told you this, but life isn't always fair. When things change sometimes is isn't for the best for everyone but the best for the majority. You might have to change providers (if you don't want to change their premiums) or pay a little more, but lives are being saved. People are not being kicked off their insurance and dying. You complain that you can't afford "decent insurance" but you can afford insurance, and now thanks to the ACA so can the rest of the country.

Okay, as a Canadian, I cannot for the life of me understand why the general American population isn't getting behind nationalised health care. IT'S IN YOUR INTEREST! Why is it so hard to pony up a small percentage of your income for the collective good? You might say it's in the name of "freedom", but I ask freedom from what? Isn't nationalised health care a kind of freedom? A freedom to live without the burden of being bankrupted by something that may not even be your fault (like cancer, organ failure etc.)? Is it so hard to care about your fellow man in this way? I just don't understand.

It baffles me how the US doesn't have universal healthcare. We all pay reasonable amounts of money and in return get free health care. We don't get turned away from insurance companies, and thus every one is included. This helps close gaps for care between the rich and the poor. And we don't have to consider selling a house if someone in our family gets very very sick. It's really a great solution and has benefited me greatly. The ACA seems like a step in the right direction, but I really hope the US goes for universal healthcare (it's the only thing holding me back from moving to this beautiful country!)
