I needed another Tractor in 1999. I leased a IH Case for a month..It ran hot and was a piece of !!! I found a lightly used 8400 for $100K delivered. That was the best JD up to that point and now at 9,000 hrs it has been trouble free except needing a new seat, new injectors, air condenser and LED lights.

Use a magnet and pull it back out the oil fill it should be straight down. If you get it out without pulling the engine buy a lottery ticket.

There's a screen on the oil suction tube. The crank throws don't reach that far down into the "pan" if you cant fish it out with a flexible magnet i wouldn't even sweat about it. Go run her and bounce her around a bit. Could be, it'll bounce its way down into the drain. Not ideal, but not the end of the world

99-2000 I was on high school work program, in Iowa had a new 8300 with glencoe 9 shank. Without spring shanks. Busted a lot of bolts. But that was an amazing rig.

Can you stick a telescoping magnet down the fill tube and reach the oil pan? If so wrap some electrical tape around the outside of the magnet a few times to make it less sticky/magnetic so only the tip or bottom of the magnet will collect the tip off the oil fill line. It should be right under the fill neck so you might need to bend the magnet wand a little bit to get depending on how curved the fill tube is.

Great work BJ and Dad on cleaning up the 8400. Looks great! Brian I suspect that piece can live a long and happy life in the bottom of the sump. Or go fishing and scoping. I do like the epoxied magnet suggestion to at least keep it in one place.

Run a bore scope down the fill tube to see where it is, then use a flex magnet to fish it out. Don’t ask me how I know!!

Thanks for another great video Brian. It was enjoyable and most interesting. Ouch on the oil filler end dropping on the oil pan. I bet that engine is one that you can’t just drop the oil pan. Might be part of the block assembly. You might want to try a magnet down the oil filler tube and see if you can get the piece out that way. Otherwise you Deere dealer might have a suggestion. Ouch on this one. Not an easy fix I believe. Let us know how you come out. Busy time of the year with equipment maintenance and paperwork for chemicals and all that. Neighbor that I drive packing tractor for silage had the dipstick break off. There is no oil pan on the JD 8R series but after five hours of fishing with a camera and clamping device they retrieve it.

If I'm not mistaken I believe that the entire bottom of the engine is part of the tractor frame and the only way to do that is remove the engine. I could be and hope I'm wrong. Unless there is an inspection plate somewhere.

Bryan not sure if this will work or not. I bought one of these for equipment inspections to see what I can’t see up in combines. engine bays, lines etc. Has a hook and might be able to hook the nozzle that fell off. If worse comes to worse they make electric eyes to ruñ down heater ducks to check fir cracks and plugs in the lines. Possibly could use something like that to find the filler nozzle and get it back out.

I did this exact same thing on a massey. Unfortunately no removable pan, as it was keyed into the gearbox. A magnet and alot of effort snagged it out. Nightmare.

i was watching you change oil in the 8400 and this was a 1st. I was telling the computer don't that and then saying look on the frame and when you lost the oil fill rod i felt really really felt sorry for you!! You know by now the oil pan is part of the frame and you have pull the engine yikes! Hope a magnet can pull it out-i'm pulling for you on this one, BTW I GOT A 96 8300 WITH 4250 HOURS ON HER
