That's right, I may have just ruined this bag. This is my first time waxing a bag. I definitely learned a lot. I know what to do next time, and what NOT to do next time. So lets see what waxing a Gootium Canbvas Rucksack for the first time looks like.

Why in the world do you wear your hat backwards? A while back I saw a husband and wife with their hats backwards holding their hands over their eyes blocking the sun, D'oh. Have folks wearing their hats backwards lost all sense of reality? It is beyond me why Folks wear their hats backwards, absolutely you do not look cool, it makes you appear as goofy "not-right-bright" person. Do you realize it leaves a silly half-moon suntan on your forehead, and it appears when not wearing a hat as well? Thus, not knowing the bill of the hat belongs in the front protecting your eyes reduces your credibility.

Wow! You are a wealth of knowledge I have never known! Thank you for judging me on the stupidity of others. I wear my hat backwards for several reasons. None of which include me caring that you think I look goofy or “not credible.” I wear my hat backwards to cover my messy hair, keep my hair out of my eyes, to keep my hat from blowing off my head in the wind, while riding a skateboard, or bike. Really for any number of other reasons. I DO wear my hat with the brim forward when in the sun to shield my eyes, and to prevent getting a strap back hat sun burn. So no I am not as stupid as you believe. And I am wearing my hat backwards in this video for a very particular reason. The studio lights cast a harsh shadow over my face of the brim is facing forward. So once again thank you for your “knowledge” on this topic. I invite you to not watch any more of my content and take your Karen advice elsewhere.

I got the same bag, and some micro-crystalline wax. I used the method where you grind the wax bar against the canvas and leave a trail of wax dust behind. It took me hours to finish the rucksack because I needed at least 3 applications but the wax use was minimal. The bag looks nice but I think if I am going to do it again (and I probably will) I will use a brush (I also used a heat gun and that was the better option). I chose micro-crystalline wax because it is a more flexible wax (compared to paraffin or beeswax). It is a bit expensive for a wax but I think it is the best wax for the application.

I think you did really well! Maybe a little heavy handed, but that's not necessarily bad. I like the way it turned out. I wonder what it looks like after you have used it for a while, because, I think, waxed objects are often those things that just get better and better the more you use them. I have never waxed a bag before, but I have used beeswax quite a bit and if I may offer a few tips: it you get wax on the pot, it wouldn't ruin it, it just comes off in hot water. So, ahum, when you wash it 😉 You can even eat beeswax (I wouldn't recommend eating a bar of it, but it's not poisonous), fresh honeycomb is considered a delicacy! If you spill wax on something like your table or clothes, you often can use paper towels and an iron to get (most of it) out again. You could de-gunk your brush by holding it in the hot wax (while it's in the simmering pan), or stick it in a pot of boiling water, although then you have a wet brush.. I've seen people use those foam "brushes" maybe that would work better with wax..? 🤷‍♀️ I ended up going with a different backpack, but mine is also unwaxed. I bought a bar to wax it, so it will be interesting to see how that turns out. A bar might be slower, but I figured because it doesn't take any preparation before use and is a lot less messy, I can do a bit at time while watching tv or something. Or, at least that's what I am invisioning 😂 Enjoy your upgraded bag! If your fall is anything like my autumn (rain, every day), you are going to get a lot of use out if it!

It is looking like rain is in our future here. So I am thinking a good first test might be for a little walk in the woods. I have several waxed jackets, and I can attest waxed goods look so much better with age and use. As for the brush it was a cheap one I had laying around from a small project I did this past fall. It wasn’t worth the time to clean it. I should have ran out and picked up a second brush, even from the dollar store. I did think about a cloth or a sponge brush, but I figured they would both absorb too much of the wax. A bar is the way to go. The drip cloth is super nice for ease of clean up. I know I could have scrapped the wax off the table, but I didn’t want to spend an hour cleaning it up. It makes mess management SO much easier. A bar will take longer, but be much mor accurate applying. I would do what you said. Sit down in front of the TV and do it on sections. Take your time with it. It’s actually a pretty fun experience and a good learning exercise.

Do you still use this bag? Do you recommend waxing it, or should i just get a waterproof cover for the bag?

I use it from time to time. I prefer the bag before I waxed it.

Leave the wax in the pot's hot water whilst you are waxing the bag, son. Also, the bag will be fine, it's not ruined.....the wax will even out and wear away with regular use.

If I were to wax the bag in my kitchen, this would be feasible. But not necessary. The wax stays liquid for plenty of time. It o my really hardens when you are close to the bottom and it thins out. Also this would make a mess out of the pot. And I am NOT dealing with my wife angry because I got wax all over the pot. I know the bag isn't ruined. Catchy Thumbs and titles gets more clicks.

Hey any update on the bag? did the wax even out and soften up?

It softened up with a few uses. And was keeping water out. So turns out, I didn’t ruin the bag after all!
