I forget who said it first but my favorite saying on this topic goes along the lines of "the list isnt made for the levels anymore, the levels are made for the list" Another thing is that top 1 caliber demons are simply more common now, according to the final difficulty rankings of levels, cataclysm is only 3 top 1 levels removed from a level that's still on the list Cata > BB > SW > and PPF which is still at 117 The harder levels are too frequent to feel special anymore

In my opinion the reason top 1s arent exciting anymore is because of how many are being made. If you look up a video of all upcoming extremes within the top like 40 you'll see at least 20 top 1s. Before there were a few projects which could've been top 1 like Bloodbath. But now there's so many top 1s they become more of the norm and not the rare occurrence.

All the builders are doing is buff levels until they´re near impossible. They dont care about playability and fun, only difficulty. Top levels aren't exciting because there are more dedicated top players now than there were 5 years ago and that's mainly because high refresh rate devices are now easier to get and many fps bypass mods have been made, it's also because people play and grind more nowadays. Every single week there is a new Top 10 and Zoink can buff an impossible level and verify it in like 50K attempts. Top players have simply gotten better just like the rest of the community. This is similar to what has happend to the Minecraft community. Surivival play troughs aren't fun anymore because people have gotten better at the game.

The most recent interesting top levels have been Tartarus, Firework and Acheron. Which made me realize that you need a few things for a top level to feel special: 1. It needs to be difficult enough to stay unverified for longer than just a few weeks (just look at all the excitement silent clubstep brought). 2. A layman should be able to see how difficult it truly is while watching. With all the details and high speeds, it is very difficult for a viewer get a decent estimate.

I think a lot more modern verifications have a high degree of hype than people give them credit for, often because the course of events kind of sweeps them under the rug. The Silent Clubstep verification should have been one of the most insane moments in the game's history but it was ruined because a hacker's opinion kept the level from being top 1. Firework was similarly extremely hype consisting of a crazy journey quite akin to Bloodlust but its chance to be top one was also ruined by Space. This isn't to say anything of the absurd coincidence of Zodiac and Thinking Space being verified on the same day, which didn't receive the hype it deserved because everyone thought Zodiac had already been verified. And then there was the nutso accomplishment of Crimson Planet, whose lack of a rate kept people from realizing that Wooshi was all alone at the top of the accomplishments ladder for almost a full year. Heck, you can even consider the "what if" scenario of Mullsy being the one to verify Tartarus in over 200k attempts. I actually think there's nothing inherently less hype about modern top 1 demons - they may be less original, well-decorated, or fun to play, but they are just as much of monumental challenges as the old ones - but a combination of unfortunate circumstances, hackers, inconsistent rates, and Zoink being a person who exists has just caused us to have a really anticlimactic series of top 1s since 2019.

The main reason I think top 1s are so boring now is due to the creators, they just push out these soulless top 1s with either fixed hitboxes or frame perfects to try to get some clout, and usually its just Zoink beating them in like 10-20k attempts which makes it even more boring, not many people put much effort to make their level memorable, for gods sake Avernus was only known for being the "Antagonist to The Golden" until it was top 1, and even then, people still hate it, some exceptions are levels like Slaughterhouse, Tartarus, or even Kenos as they were entertaining to watch IF they would verify it. Another reason is that we've almost reached the skill limit, with frame perfects we cant really get too much higher without making it humanly impossible. well we are reaching a turning point. maybe creators finally gave it some light but we are receiving longer levels. flamewall, tidal wave, ascension to heaven, grief, anathema, apocalyptic trilogy, heliopolis, every end, etc. base gameplay has probably reached skill limit. with things like Unknown, qoUEO, sakupen circles, silent clubstep. all short levels/sections with a burst of probably the most difficult base gameplay. at least with longer levels, the base gameplay will not be as difficult. difficulty will be carried by length for a while until people eventually make the base gameplay of 3+ minute long levels harder and harder true skill ceiling/limit will be reached once we have 3min+ levels with base gameplay of like oblivion or firework 😭

kinda unrelated but i hate how some levels get their difficulty decreased by robtop after time passes and players get better. the only that changed is the skill cap, which increased, but a new player that attempts an easy demon that was once a hard or even insane demon many years ago may cause extreme frustration. the level is still as difficult as an insane demon, but compared to the rising skill cap it got “easier” despite new players having to deal with its hidden difficulty

I have 2 ideas on why top 1s are not enjoyable anymore. For the record I personally get excited for top 1s. There is the main idea that there are too many top 1s however I feel that might not be 100% the reason considering that the week where firework, slaughterhouse and Arcturus were rated people were somewhat excited about. 1. My main idea is that it isn't the amount of top 1s but the amount of time that it takes for them to be made and verified. Older top 1s would take way less time to make but could still take months to beat, whereas now its years to make and like half a year to beat. This is bad because if the amount of top 1s being made stays the same the amount of overlap with each extreme increases so it goes from there being 1 or 2 being made and verified at once to like 8 at once because some are being made when some are on the brink of verification. And the more top 1s you have to be hyped for the less hyped you can be about any of them and so you stop getting excited. This argument can be made for there being too many top 1s being made now as well however. 2. There is also the idea that once top 1s get too hard and like 1 or 2 people can beat them they stop being fun or exciting because people literally wont be able to play past the first click. For me I find it fun watching top players like aeon that are very very good but not the best player play through them in practice giving their takes on the level, and also enjoyed playing tidal wave in practice when it came out, (i spent 2.5k attempts on it in 30mins without hacks other than fps bypass) and I find that to be fun, it also gives me some "insight" into what makes certain parts of the level hard and what is easy. Like that one dash orb click in tidal wave that everyone thought was gonna be impossible was actually really easy. I think that the argument of top 1s being too hard for people to attempt sections of would definitely make some people less excited but I feel that maybe they should start looking more to the middle of the list or just harder extremes in general rather than list levels as that would be where they would find more difficulty that is suited to them. Cause i mean its not like you are gonna pick up a top 1 after beating nine circles or windy landscape and complain about it being too hard and not fun.

i think you should've commented on the tartarus race. i cant say i was in the twitch streams for cataclsym, bloodbath or even yatagarasu, but i was aware and amongst the hype at the time. so considering that, i do personally think that the race to verify tartarus deserves to be mentioned. from my view, it was very similar to the race to first victor of bloodbath; there were many players that made some progress but nothing too substantial and they all ended up giving up. until mullsy, an unknown player at the time, slowly grinded progress, gained attraction and many people were excited that this seemingly impossible level that no one could handle could be verified. i remember seeing the tartarus preview and thinking 'there's no way someone can do this', and those thoughts were only amplified after seeing the amount of good players struggle getting such little progress. then when it seemed like it was almost over, mullsy had his 97% fail, and then seemingly out of nowhere, dolphy comes along as an underdog to verify it. then the backlash, drama and hackusations against dolphy and mullsy's response, it was a pretty exciting and huge event for community imo. that brief description i provided doesnt do the story complete justice since there was more going on (there has been a few good videos narrating it, such as gmdblue's 'Race to Beat Tartarus'). i watched many of ur videos when i was younger and im aware that you sort of distanced yourself from the community during that time, so maybe since u weren't as active, perhaps you were unaware of the hype? but overall tho i do agree that the past top 1's i.e acheron, slaughterhouse, just dont have the same background and charm that these older levels had, and the idea of verification races, which basically originated with tartarus, has just been saturated. it was good the first time but now it just feels lazy, and overall as an 'average' community member, its just not as enjoyable to witness.

I think this might be a case of rose tinted glasses and unfortunate circumstances. All of these levels are quite old at this point, hell I wasn’t an adult when they were verified but also I think there have been some awesome verifications. Slaughterhouse was awesome but we all know what happened with space and silent clubstep being verified made me just as hype as the day cataclysm dropped. I think there’s still awesome moments in the game and I really like tidal wave, but I will never be a middle school boy with wonder in his eyes watching cataclysm be beaten again. And that wonder makes the stories even grander when we retell them. I think one day a new generation of players will look back on levels like slaughterhouse and tidal wave the same way we do now. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think levels are still cool I just don’t get as hyped as I was as a kid.

However, the skill cap for the game is much larger nowadays, so levels like Avernus and Tidal Wave are basically impossible except for the players who actively have beaten top 10s.
