Ski's with adapters that clamp on to the tires would be a great way to get a little lift and would not require any modification to the trike. With the added benefit of being fast and easy to remove. They make Bike tire or trailer mount skis (used for ice fishing houses) which go over the tire and simply ratchet strap or clamp onto the tire. It might be an option if you get the right size/configuration and make it easier to put them on and off. They might be a bit heavy depending on the design, but a ratchet strap type design is really easy to put on and take off. They also might be a little wider making it easier to ride over the snow, especially something with more powder. I'd love to see what you can come up with.

Just a thought: be careful about drilling the hole larger in the snowmobile ski mounts. You're weakening the stiffness of the mount that way. You increased the size of the holes significantly, which took away from the distance between the top of the mount to the pole running through it. There's a lot of twist forces going through those mounts.

Add two more ski's to the front (side-by-side-by-side) making a largerr planing platform (a wider stance means less sinking into the softer snows), and any snow thrown up, would go further to the sides, and not onto you. Rear ski's are adequate. Also, adding weight to the rear edge of the ski's, would cause them to rotate nose up during slow speed, and simply wind vane otherwise. Can also be done with a bungee on the nose to pull it up. Obviously, touching down will force the ski's flat again.

@nickbraun24884 жыл бұрын
The metal carbides on the bottom of the ski, add alot of tracking stability on snow surfaces that are more dense or crusty. You may see a decrease in performance if you remove them, but i guess we wont know unless you try! Rad conversion Tucker!

@SilvaDreams3 жыл бұрын

As soon as you mentioned, "I'm going to try and land on the runway/taxiway", I immediately started shaking my head... no, no, no. As a driver of a snowmobile (in the past), I knew going over anything not snow means immediate loss of steering, especially concrete/asphalt. Your skis don't get a chance to dig in a channel on those surfaces, like they do snow, so there is no stability or steering. You're at the mercy of whatever forces happen on you. On a sled you pretty much angle where you need to go before you hit that surface, and then travel across in a straight line. Nice vid though!

Tucker spray a silicon based wax on the bottome of your ski's and let it dry the skis will slide over any thing after with no drag. also if you use a wider ski you can leave your tires in place and just strap the ski's to the tires to get your ground clearance your looking for. than all you will need to do is find away to keep the ski's up right so you don't crash when you land.

Three leaf springs, half the diameter of your wheel height will raise you up above the kicked up snow, and give the shock absorption your tires offer. Center your hubs just slightly forward of the balance point and they'll naturally nose up. Carbon Fiber leaf springs would do it.
@dougscott81614 жыл бұрын
I interrupted the video within the first minute to comment. I have been wondering how well skis would work with a trike, but I am glad Tucker did the first flight solo, just in case there might be problems, now back to the video .......Add On: at 5:37.... You might want to spray the bottoms of the skis with P.A.M. or some other non-stick agent, but when the skis get as cold as the ground and snow they should release well.........Add about 4 inches to height for better snow clearance and some kind of deflection so you don't bury Jaclyn, I don't think she would be too happy about becoming a flying snowgirl. Merry Christmas, God Bless, and stay safe.
@billbroughton23044 жыл бұрын

Switch those heavy sticky skis for Simmons skis, they're lighter and much better floatation and steering control. We have made the switch on all our snowmobiles, they work much better, especailly in wet snow.
@icebabysnocain4 жыл бұрын
That should work ok for the winter stuff. All I would change is I believe the front ski is always some wider than the back two so there is no digging in. Right now you're digging in a bit. Good video. Peace.
@RoughAndWretchedRAW3 жыл бұрын
I'd see about getting a wider ski for the front also. To keep it from skidding around on the ice you could also put some steel runners on the skies just like snowmobiles. Won't help on pavement but on Ice the steel or carbide runners will give you near the same lateral ground holding power of wheels.
@prowebber14 жыл бұрын
@tuckergott use a product called "Zardoz Base Boost" on the bottom of your skis. It's liquid teflon that will help immensely to make the skis more slick and not stick on top of the snow during takeoff. Also it will reduce snow drag for a smooth long landing. I use it on my snowboard and it makes a huge difference.

Actual human snow skis would work better. They’re slipperier and can be canted a bit so the edges will grab laterally on ice. The base material is much slicker. They are probably lighter as well. Just calculate the length/ width based on skier weight.

Line the bottom of the skis with teflon coated plastic. We do that for skis on our ultralites. Otherwise the skis will stick and you won't get enough speed to take off. OR even worse, when you land they will stick and it may end up in a bad landing.
@larrypuckett10754 жыл бұрын

@tonysu88604 жыл бұрын
Some other comments recommended lubricating your skis (WD-40 or wax). You might also try some enormous balloon tires (as light as possible) replacing your 2 regular sized rear tires. Maybe a ski in front only for better steering but if you don't intend to toodle around the ground, put a large wheel on your nose, too. This would almost totally eliminate any drag on any condition, even sticky snow but might increase wind resistance. You'd have to figure out if the wheels are close enough to your body that aerodynamics would hide your wheels and not increase wind resistance that much.
@CraigWilsonAust4 жыл бұрын
Of course you are going to have to develop it further. Wouldn't be too hard to extend the skis using a triangle shaped bracket. Tje bracket extensions will also lift the front forks out of the snow. Then you need to work out how to put wheels just protruding slightly from the skis so if you need to land on a hard surface, you aren't being shifted around sideways. I hope you had a great Christmas.
