I have a friend who lived here for years and was from Australia. The one thing I learned from her was that as Australian you are accommodated to have a lot more sun than we are and even us have problems to get our vitamin D. The big difference is that your body is use to have a lot of it. So you are going to need to supplement it in bigger dose than what the locals do. And you probably should do that no matter if it winter or summer. They don't talk about that in here because most don't understand the difference. That was one of the thing she was taught by the company she worked so I would trust to that information. And that will be super important for your health in so many ways especially now when we are heading towards the dark months. Please take care of that aspect.
@thought_criminal1424 күн бұрын
When supplementing with vitamin D you have to remember most of the supplements are extremely low in vitamin D. A typical vitamin D supplement is 5 to 10 uq with 50 uq already considered "high". A Norwegian study found that just 20 minutes of being outside in Oslo gives you 10 000 to 20 000 IUs of vitamin D, that's 250 - 500 uq. So a 50 uq "high" dose of vitamin D is only 10% of what you would get in just 20 minutes of being outside. In order for vitamin D supplement to have any effect you have to use 4 000 to 50 000 IU ranges (100 - 1250 uq). There's studies done that show you only really start to get benefits from vitamin D with 50 000 IU + range over a long period of time. That's no surprise since that would equal to only around 50 minutes of sun.
@kalleekstrand62434 күн бұрын
It's more about your melatonin amount. Since non-abouriginal australians are from european descent they technically are better suited for the finnish climate than the australian. Still vitamin D can be good even for white people.

It would be interesting to see how are you holding up now that it starts being winter. Almost no sun for the next half year, cold as hell and more snow that most people have ever seen. I love winter myself but I can imagine it could be difficult to get used to as someone from such a warm country. But also the more south you are the less snow there is, Helsinki doesnt get that much anyways while Oulu gets a good amount and in Lapland you cant see anything thats not snow
