I used the FX6 - FX3 and ZV-E1 in one project, they literally gave me the same result The rigged out FX3 gave the same “wow” effect as the FX6 with no rigging The internal ND filter is great but if you already have a VND and a matte box you can get through with that ibis in the FX3 is an amazing advantage which i can’t work without because i shoot documentaries - 99% handheld My advice is to hold on to the FX3 till the new FX6 is released

There a seven rules of upgrading: Rule number 1: Never upgrade unless you/your client absolutely need/s the upgrade (i.e. from HD to 4K acquisition). Rule number 2: Never ever upgrade with anything but cash (so no loans). Rule number 3: Never upgrade by calculating possible external rentals in (only calculate for your own usage). Rule number 4: Before upgrading a camera body, first spend your money on lenses and things that streamline your workflow. Rule number 5: As a DP don't be loyal to a manufacturer - but also don't buy the latest shit every time Canon, Sony, BM ... announce something new. Rule number 6: Get Lenses with PL mount as soon as possible - you will use them on multiple bodies in the future. Rule number 7: Buy used cameras, unless you need it for a specific project (where you will get your return on investment with this single project). I broke every of these rules in my 20 your career, and always regretted it (financially).

It is easy to fall into trends and get what is the latest technology but at the end of the day, you got to realize that your clients don't know camera gear like you do. They also don't care as long as it looks good and it has a story behind it. Remember it isn't about the resolution, its about the story that you can tell from it. Keep the Sony FX3 and put more investment into lenses and understanding marketing. Fx6 looks more professional to some people but in the end what it matters is how you use it ( Client perception is real thing tho ) . I would say use fx6 as first cam and then use fx3 as second cam . I do weddings and I use fx3 as first cam and once I will have enough money for upgrade I will also do something similar . Also you should wait little bit like , maybe 2/3 more months and you can get the mark 2 of fx3 . Also I downgraded from fx6 like last year because I do run and gun stuff . I don't have time for switching lenses or changing other stuff. So I had to use the money from fx6 to fx3 + 24-70+ Rs3 pro . But yea so keep the fx3 and wait little longer for mark2 . Btw the nd filter was one of the greatest thing on fx6 , other than that there is no reason to get it . Fx3 and Fx6 are little same if you take out that part . Anyways love from UK all the best .

This is a valid decision.. I believe the FX6 ultimately is the same image as an FX3, yet the showmanship of the FX6 as a client perception is a thing but rigged up, like you said, the FX3 gives the same “value.” I say invest in a second FX3 or do get the FX6 as an A Cam if money is no issue.

Fellow ohioian here. 🤙 If you're looking to be hired by directors and agencies, then being an owner/operator would make sense. As they are your client, you want them to perceive you to be the best option for the job on both a creative and technical level. In your case, investing in an fx6 may be a good route to take. Just make sure it can work financially for you. That being said, I personally don't think you should. Better to invest in skills and craftsmanship than equipment. Maybe upgrade your crop to a fx30 instead. I own one, and it's an excellent little camera.

it could be beneficial to get a used FX9. Nowadays they're selling for the same price as a new FX6. The oversampled 6k image will open up the opportunity to use a wide array of super35 lenses without having to drop down to 1080p or use the annoying clear image zoom workaround. It's also a camera with different capabilities. The Dual ISOs are 800 and 4000, and that high base is a lot more usable than 12800. And again - if you've already got an fx3, you've already got high gain and high frame rate capabilities. The other thing to keep in mind is that in terms of filmmaking, super35 is 'full frame', and everything larger is considered as such - Vistavision, 65mm, IMAX. Arri released a new s35 camera last year (2 years ago?), and it'll continue to be the industry standard for the foreseeable future. Soooo many lens sets were built for s35, and are still in use today.

In terms of client perception, I think your current FX3 rigged out does the trick. FX6 is a workhorse but it might be worth holding off and seeing if Sony releases some new tech in the next 6-12 months. But if it makes sense for your workflow, go for it. If it feels like a stretch financially, I’d just hold off. No need to put yourself under more stress when you already have a very capable camera.

People often focus on the look the client perceives. Above that, the FX6 internal electronic variable NDs are second to none. Once you shoot the FX6, the “pocket camera” will be a thing of the past. Coming to this from a longtime FS5MII shooter with two full rigs, I prefer to film on those than the A7SIII/FX3. Filming at night even in 12800 ISO you sometimes can use the electronic ND to gain a look. I would say go all in with the FX6. You can pick up used cameras for a bit of savings if you want. Because you are into the Sony ecosystem, it just makes sense. Also having just a single BP-U90/98/100 battery will last for 4 hours of shooting so you do not need to have bulky, cable ridden rigs. I am stuck in a similar quandary and want to sell my FS5MIIs but need to sell both just to get into the FX6 but I also prefer the Super 35 sensor to full-frame. Just my personal preference. Once you use that electronic variable ND, you will not want to go back to messing around with lens filters.

I have an FX6 A cam FX3 B cam setup right now and it’s a great combo. It allows you to keep the FX3 small and versatile and you can build the FX6 into any type of camera you need for any pretty much situation, both narrative and doc. FWIW the FX6 is much more of a ‘cinema camera’ than the FX3, especially in regard to IO, menu, media formats etc. Having one will acclimate you to what it’s like to operate that type of camera. Overall It’s a great two camera setup for doc. I will add that if you want to go more into the strictly narrative / commercial world, there is an actual benefit to having an Arri or a Venice, chances are you’ll get likely get hired (in part) for your camera package.

It’s definitely an interesting question to ask the internet! 😜 In my opinion, owning a second FX camera could be really useful if you want more corporate work, or if you would benefit for 2 angles running at once. I’ve found that a lot of corporate gigs want you to provide 2 cameras that match. I really wouldn’t worry about client perception, or the size of your camera. I’m noticing that’s more an internet topic, than a real thing (speaking as someone who shows up with a large FX9 package - I have been asked to put my FX9 away and pull out my FX30 because it is smaller and draws less attention). My friends who own an FX6, are all big fans of the internal ND and buttons (which make operating it faster), but pretty much all of them are annoyed with the camera shake you get. It has no IBIS, it’s a pretty small camera, and so you get lots of micro jitters, unless you’re using a support system, like an easy rig or a sakk or whatever. So usually I see FX6s sitting on tripods, and FX3s getting b-roll. Those are just my thoughts, you’ve got an awesome camera right there, and you’re in an awesome eco system. I’m pretty sure the FX line will be around for a good while! Wish you all the best man!!

Hi I own an FX3. I previously used to lend FX6 for some event videography but when it came to decide which camera to buy, I chose the FX3... form factor and mounting points, ibis, better for gimbal use... I use FX3 with 2024 atomos ninja, v-mount battery and nisi C5 mattebox. The difference in image quality is not that substantial to "waste" the money on FX6. I personally did not find the electronic ND such a useful feature to make an impact. I would advise you to save your money and use it for same other gear you might use to improve your filmmaking journey and when it comes to an upgrade: A) Sony FX9 (expensive but worth the upgrade after some time of saving) ...B) Consider the ecosystem switch to for example RED (nice pricedrop nowdays) or Blackmagic (Easier workflow with davinci software or other of their hardware)... This is what I am strugling with to choose. Some other cameras might also be released so I would wait :D

Your video popped up on my feed, lots of people are giving good advice but i thought id comment, maybe it will be helpful I work on narrative features in the uk, I have worked with BFI, BBC and some other independent companies as a director and DP as well as working towards directing my own feature. I would say it depends on how you would like to go about getting jobs, wether you want to create, fund and produce/ shoot your own projects or you want to get hired to shoot for company’s. independent projects are going to be very different then working on narrative for a company and realistically it doesn’t matter that much what camera you have at them moment if you want to get hired by a company because its going to take a while to work up to DP on a project like that, for your first job in that space the director and producers are probably going to have more decision power for what your gonna shoot on and it will probably be a higher end camera anyway. Box cameras are always going to be industry standard, for there capability in terms of workflow, wether its ARRI, SONY, RED… big or small narrative is always going to have a team foe you to work with. Commercial is going to be different again it’s different now because we have way more work for online commercials they are usually the ones that may ask if you have gear what your kit list is and so on bigger company’s usually have a look in mid and are going to decide for you though unless you have your own ARRI or VENICE. It’s supper important that you make sure the jobs your on boarding are professional to, that doesn’t have anything to do with budget or having a huge crew, it just mean having the right team and knowing that what your Woking on is going to be beneficial otherwise your never going to grow and get new work/ bigger work, its always going to be the same level always that first job, so even though its not your job directly make sure sound, lighting, costume and so on are decent. Owning some lighting and sound gear is also super helpful especially lighting gear, learn how to gaffer learn how to 2AC, 1AC and so on, your way more likely to get on to a small to mid level job for a company doing that first. i would definitely hold of for a little while at least since the sony fx6 mark 2 might drop soon there might not be that many new features but if there’s more recording options ports internal raw, company’s will look for that. Trying not to make this super long, I would also post your work supper supper important if people have and idea of your visual style there more likely to hire you. I know there are different between the UK and America but i think all of those things are generally thins you want to practice and keep in mind hope thats helps.

Honestly the Canon C80 is better than FX6 and it’s cheaper new.. but many companies do hire Sony users.. FX3 II on the horizon? It sounds like you’ve already decided though and I think you’d be happy with the FX6. What Would you NOT be able to do with the FX6? That’s the question.. I LOVE MY FX3 I just wish it had ND’s built in. Check those limitations then decide brother God Speed!

I've seen the C80, definitely a great camera, but I'm already pretty invested (happily) in the Sony Ecosystem! And absolutely, besides the form factor, the internal ND's would be SO game-changing for me. Thanks for the insight!

FX6 A cam combined with an FX3 B cam for gimbal / second angle would be LETHAL. Saved and pulled the trigger on the FX6 (moved from CanonR6mkii) almost every job I have taken the client has been very impressed. I was in almost exactly the same boat as you 2 months ago, when I bought an FX6 to have alongside my FX3. In short - The FX3 is more versatile, IBIS alone makes it more useful in a lot of instances (I shoot mostly handheld). But, on the FX6 the electronic ND is SO good that the feature alone makes it feel like an upgrade, and the feeling of using a grown-up camera is not to be ignored! If given the choice between EITHER the FX3 or the FX6, the FX3 would win in nearly every case for the shooting I do. The FX6 once stabilised with it's much comfier ergonomics have definitely made all-day shooting less tiring for me personally. With what I now know of the differences between the cameras, I wouldn't buy the FX6. Instead, I would take out a loan for a Burano, make it available on the online rental websites to pay the monthly instalments, and sell myself to local production companies as a Burano owner/operator.
@CollinJung
@CollinJung 9 күн бұрын
@@Adam.Hughes this is super helpful info - I really appreciate all the insight man. I’m not sure if the Burano would be a realistic purchase for me at the moment but I will definitely look into the options - do you have any idea of what the ratio would be for average profit per month? Also - have you seen any kind of similar tangible income simply from owning the FX6? Or has it just been a camera upgrade for your workflow?
@Adam.Hughes

It doesn’t matter if you want to be a creative DP or an Eng cameraman. You are now a businessman and you have to think as such. I would not get it bc you think higher level skills require a higher level camera. I know multiple colleagues that get the same or higher caliber client with their fx3’s. I would only get it if your productions require it. That can be: clients are asking for it or the production needs multiple video out signals/TC/form factor. Client perception is not a factor. Your fx3 rig looks the exact same when it’s next to an fx6.
