To be fair, the fight wasn't that one sided. Most of Arthas's abilities cancelled out Sauron's ( mind and soul manipulation as well as their respective control over fire/ice and shadow) And Frostmourne was easily the Lich King's biggest advantage as he could reliably deal damage to Sauron's soul on top of his Helm giving him the tools he needs to see past Sauron's illusions and figure out what he's all about The main deciding factors were the fact that Sauron had a higher recorded power feat (even considering how powerfull the Lich King was at the end of WoTLK) and the fact that Sauron has literally been around since the dawn of creation and has warred with Middle-Earth for tens of thousands of years

@@filipvadas7602 Had the Lich King realized that the ring was Sauron's power source, he'd have cut off the bastard's fingers/hand (Isildur did it but he mainly got LUCKY) and then turned his soul stealing attention to the One Ring itself. Of course pulling that off would require he do it maybe after infecting him with the Plague and obviously before he just sheds that physical body. Sauron however would likely realize that the guy knew and just never give him that opportunity. The Frostmourn was the only weapon that could actually destroy Sauron's Soul but his combat experience trumped Arthas' and Ner'zul's combined prowess.

This fight was great but the makers did not research enough about the lichking. How could a weapon forged by the runesmith of the afterlife, made out of a metal that is only found in the afterlife be broken by a ordinary steel weapon? You know that it broke in WOTLK because arthas was catched off guard by Tirion and Tirion is the strongest paladin with the legendary ashbringer that contains a piece of a naruu. The ashbringer is at least a weapon 10 times as strong as this shitty steel mace. Sauron on the other hand was defeated by an ordinary human with a broken straight sword.

This has been the most interesting waiting period I've seen for a death battle. I know absolutely nothing about these two, but watching the back and forth on deciding who would win was so fascinating. Nobody could seem to agree, and both seemed to make very convincing arguments. It was to the point G1 prediction blog(?) sauron only one by *one vote.* This was a very interesting debate, and I love it.

I'd give the win to Arthas just because Sauron has lost literally every single fight he's personally participated in. He does best when he avoids conflict and just manipulates people to destroy themselves.

@@ZanathKariashi Those distinctions mostly matter in thier own worlds though. When compared directly, Sauron’s power and immortality overpowered Frostmourne, and seeing as both were as fast as each other, Sauron could react in time to counter Arthas’ attacks. Besides, it’s not like Arthas seems to use his renowned combat prowess as the Lich King, seeing as most of his attacks are just spell spamming and wild sword swings.

@@ZanathKariashi Actually Sauron has 6 fights in the books. 1: Sauron vs Finrod. Winner Sauron 2: Sauron vs Huan and Luthian. Winner Huan and Luthian (but Sauron was pretty objectivly stronger and only lost due to bad luck) 3: Sauron vs Celebrimbor. Winner Sauron 4: Sauron vs The last Alliance. Winner Sauron (this is specifically when the last alliance had been seaging Barad Dur for 7 years and Sauron personally, singlehandidly drove back the alliance) 5: Sauron vs Elendil and Gil Galad. Winner either draw or Sauron (sorces are unclear if Sauron survived and was than killed by Isildur or if he was killed by the duo and Isildur only cut off the ring from his corpse) (Sauron was also heavily weakened during both this one and number 4) 6: Sauron vs The While Council [= at least Saruman, Galadriel, Gandalf, Elrond, Radagast/ and likely Celeborn, Glorfindel, Cirdan] Winner. The while Council but it was a vary narrow win against the weakest known version of Sauron and Sauron wanted to go back to Mordor anyway. So based on this it is clear that every time Sauron lost it was either because he was weakened, outnumbered, or both and when he fights people 1v1 he tends to win by a mile. I’de go so far as to say that only 2 of these fights were actually fair for Sauron. Because he is just so damn powerful that people feel the need to team up against him. “Confrontation of Sauron alone, unaided, self to self was not contemplated” -JRR Tolkien, latter 246

Lich is a term that has been used both in medieval fantasy literature, folklore, and even just simple linguistics. This is because originally, "Lich" simply meant "Corpse; Cadaver; Dead Body; Remains" in Old English, i.e., the form of English that the guy who wrote Beowulf (and would later inspire J. R. R. Tolkien, the man who created the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit) spoke. And this was reflected in an archaic term for a cemetery; a "Lich-Field" or "Litchfield," in addition to the "Lichgate" that funerary processions in England passed through as part of the service. So how did it become associated with the image of "Undead Wizard," as promoted by D&D, fantasy games, and so on? Well, the earliest attested use of the word in this manner was the story fragment 'The Stairs in the Crypt,' written by Clark Ashton Smith (whose most well-known literary compatriots were H. P. Lovecraft, who created the Cthulhu Mythos, and Robert E. Howard, the writer who gave the world Conan the Barbarian) in some unspecified date around the mid-to-late 1920's, completed posthumously and published in 1976 (15 years after Smith's death in 1961), with help from his friend, Lin Carter. In fact, a lot of the old 'Sword-and-Sorcery' pulp fantasy stories from the early 20th Century often made use of the term to refer to corpses, but the Stairs in the Crypt was the first to explicitly connect it to "Undead Wizards." A 2nd-place contender for earliest use of Lich as "Undead Wizard" is Robert E. Howard's 'Skull-Face (a novella released in a series of installments from October 1929 to December 1929 in Weird Tales, a popular Pulp Fantasy-Horror-Science Fiction rag),' in which a modern day (i.e., 1920's Era) character named Stephen Costigan does battle against a resurrected necromancer from the fabled kingdom of Atlantis.

One thing thats fun about Sauron is that he cant create anything orriginal anymore since he was corrupted by Morgoth. By that time all he does is twist beutifull things into something vile and he immitates Morgoth all the time, hes a lot more cunning and sneaky than his old master but he does immitate his army, for example the fell beasts his Ringwraiths ride on can be seen as cheap imitations of the great dragons that Morgoth made, Sauron also allied himself with Shelob (the giant spider from the last lotr movie) to mimic the way Morgoth was allied to Ungoliant the mother of all spiders, who was a spider demon of such epic proportions that even Morgoth himself cried for help once she turned on him... Sauron even corrupted Saruman the same way he was corrupted by Morgoth...

In case you’re confused there were 3 rings for the Elves, 7 rings for the Dwarves, and 9 rings for Men. Which adds up to 19. Then Sauron made the One Ring to rule the other rings.

Okay, so after taking the time to actually digest this battle here are my thoughts: *Lich King* : 1. They kind of skimmed over the fact that Frostmourne is able to damage and trap souls, even ones like the Nathrazim who , like Sauron, can simply reform if their physical body dies. It was really the Lich King's main win condition. 2. The Lich King grew significantly in strength the more souls he consumed. In fact, he literally KILLS the players, *the same players* who had previously *also* beaten Illidan and many other powerfull beings like Hakkan, Onyxia, Nefarian, Ragnaros (albeit not at full power) and even a moderately weakened *Kil'jaeden* , you know ,the guy who *MADE* the original Lich King! Then he begins to resurrect them at the end of his fight admitting that it was his plan to bring the strongest individuals in Azeroth to his seat of power to become generals in his army, implying he had been toying with them the entire time. The only reason he loses is because Frostmourne is broken at the last second , which *does* track as Sauron's win condition. But ,it really shows that the Lich King was WAY more powerfull at his peak then they gave him credit for. Other then that they did a good job of representing him and although he lost the fact that they showed that experience and raw power were the *only* deciding factors just shows how much of a threat he was. His responses to Sauron were badarse and the way they had him counter him blow for blow did the most popular character in Warcraft history justice. *Sauron* : 1. The main thing that irked me about their Sauron analysis was that didn't really enthasise how big of a weakness the Ring is. Sauron didn't just retreat into his spirit form when the Ring was separated from him, he literally *LOST THE ABILITY* to maintain a physical form and the loss in power was so great that he needed centuries to rebuild his spirit's influence over the physical world. Shown by the fact that the Nazgul also weren't able to maintain physical form until around the events of the the LoTR as their power is directly proportional to his own 2. Something I wish they had mentioned was that Sauron usually didn't even fight with a weapon. Sure the mace is iconic, but the dude had a tendency to throw down with his *BARE HANDS* which would be wreathed in flame (hence why Isildur had the perfect opportunity to cut off his finger) Similar to Arthas, they did an overall good job and ironically gave Sauron more badass scenes then the Jackson trilogies or the sh!t Amazon series *combined* The shot of him erupting Mount Doom in the background and sitting on the Frozen Throne with it slightly melting were definite highlights

The reason they kind of lowballed both of them is due to the fact that it's not very clear how they scale to other threats. Even if they highballed them so that they could achieve the same feats as more powerful opponents, Arthas would still be around planet level, while Sauron would be around Star level, so Sauron had the edge in power either way. Also, Sauron has complete control over his own soul, and The One Ring further enhances this trait, so basically Sauron has Soul protection by default. This also grants him the ability to repair damage dealt to his soul, as he can just re-shape it so that it’s healthy again.
@ZanathKariashi
@ZanathKariashi Жыл бұрын
Sauron's form was only dispersed because of how much damage he'd taken in the fight (killing him along with the other 2), and removing the ring removed his "ENHANCED" level of power which caused his body to deteriorate since that enhanced power level was all that was holding it together at that moment (also canonically he wasn't killed by Isilldur, that was only in the movies, he died from his wounds from Elindel and Gil-galad, and then Isildur cut the ring off his corpse as wergilde for the battle due to his father's death). However he recovered back to his original level of power after a few centuries but kept hidden because he wanted to search for the Ring without alerting anyone, it was only after people noticed something was going on that he started letting the Naz'gul become more active and obvious to distract from the fact that he was in fact back to buy him more time until he was finally discovered. He actually had the Nazgul running around unclad looking for the ring during the early parts as only a handful of beings in middle earth would be able to see an unclad Nazgul. Sauron can always access the original amount of power he put into the ring, regardless of where it is at the time (provided the Ring remains loyal to him), but he's even further enhanced beyond that when the ring is actually in his possession as it hones and magnifies his powers of domination. (as Tolkiens writing said on the matter, if someone had managed to conquer the Ring's will, it would've destroyed Sauron just the same as unmaking the ring, as it would no longer let him access the power he'd put into it (which is the only thing at this point keeping from him being a helpless diminished shadow, since he lost all his remaining power during his death at Neumenor)

Yeah, the drawbacks of the movies had the flaw of not being able to include everything. Just for perspective, Tolkien’s son-when discussing the movie with Peter Jackson-said the only way to encompass everything/the most from the LOTR book was to have each of the three movies be 7 hours long. A total of 21 hours. Trust me when I saw that Tolkien was a very specific and articulate writer. He had all sorts of Appendices, wrote as much detail as he could for every character, and created his own languages for the many races in his books. And he expanded upon all of that when he made the Silmarillion, the prequel to the Hobbit and LOTR.

One thing to consider with this battle is that Tolkien heavily inspired the pantheon of LotR from actual Christianity. When LotR's god, who was based on the Christian god, tried to destroy Sauron, who wasn't even this world's version of Satan, but one of Morgoth's generals, Sauron literally just walked it off. Just to note, a Lich is generally depicted as a nearly-immortal undead with dominion over other undead. For instance, in D&D & Pathfinder, a Lich is extremely hard to kill permanently, as unless you destroy the Lich's phylactery first, killing the Lich will only be temoprary and the Lich will resurrect at some point between 1-10 days later just as powerful as before but fully aware of how they were defeated the previous time. There's a reason why in-universe, Liches are viewed will utter terror. In Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, when your team runs into Zacharius, who is himself a Lich, even your party's Paladin (a holy knight that *specializes* in taking out evil beings like demons and the undead) is downright *terrified* at the thought of having to potentially fight Zacharius.

On a similar note, "Wight" being used in reference to undead is also an Old English term (this time from the word for...'man'; yep, that's all it meant, a man, or person), and J. R. R. Tolkien had a slightly more direct hand in Wight being used to refer to malicious undead to boot! This is because in Lord of the Rings, there are repeated mentions of "Barrow-Wights (also called "Barrow-Men" or "the People of the Barrows") who haunt the dark and lonely places of the world, but never too far from their barrow, where their bones were interred after death. They typically stalked the places where they died in battle or walked the perimeter of an area where they buried their treasure, so greedy and vicious even in death about anyone else laying a finger on _THEIR_ treasure, that it's common knowledge that if someone steals from a barrow, they'll be cursed by the Barrow-Wights to a wasting-away illness, bad luck, and the Barrow-Wights themselves travelling all the way from their Barrows (one of the few times they can leave it and not suffer the bane of sunlight) to reclaim their stolen property, no matter how many bloody swathes of people they need to cut through to get it back! When the writers of TSR wanted to adapt elements of the Lord of the Rings into D&D circa 1974, they had a brief copyright altercation with the estate of J. R. R. Tolkien, over the use of the words 'Hobbit' and 'Barrow-Wight,' forcing the TSR team to adjust their plans a bit (replacing 'Hobbits' with 'Halflings' and dropping the 'Barrow' from 'Barrow-Wight,' simplifying it into just 'Wight').

However, in time you develop a superiority complex looking down on those with lesser status. To explain, there really is a moment in the silmarillion where Sauron and Finrod (Who was disguised as an Orc at the time, long story) sing songs of power in competition against each other, and it is so epic that the Elves specifically wrote a poem about Sauron's victory. @Cauin450

There is one other crazy factor. The reason why Sauron set up home in Mordor. The reason is twofold. Its been asked whether or not Melkor/Morgoth had a ring? The answer is yes. The reason why nobody knows exactly where that ring is has to do with scale. When we think of the rings, we think of something that can fit on a finger. Sauron is a Maiar, Melkor was a Valar and not just any Valar but the strongest of them all. Huge difference! And the operative word is huge! One is an Angel, the other is a God. Melkor's Ring was Arda, Middle Earth, itself. His strength was literally the foundations of Middle Earth. Mount Doom/Orodruin was the largest upwelling of that strength in all of Middle Earth. Sauron forged his One Ring with his Masters power.

I hope you start getting into WoW lore. The cinematics they make are top notch and extremely entertaining. As a fan of both worlds I kinda knew Sauron would win. Sauron with the One Ring is pretty much completely unstoppable, even other Gods fear him when he is with the Ring. Army vs. Army though I think the Lich Kings forces would win an actual war. Orcs can be bred but that takes time, the undead can just be raised over and over. I get why they pitted Arthas vs. Sauron but a closer fight would've been Sargeras vs. Sauron. Then it would've been green fire against red fire lol. Probably would have to use tiny Sargeras though since his true form he is larger than planets. However, if Arthas had somehow gotten the Ring away from Sauron it would be Arthas all day. That's really Saurons only weakness is being seperated from his Ring. He's strong without it but I don't think he'd be on the same level as Arthas without it
@BrandonLee365
@BrandonLee365 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it would have been fair to pit Sargeras against him, His feats consistently put him beyond planetary in terms of attack potency, The only reason Azeroth wasn't completely destroyed in Legion was specifically because he was heavily weakened at the point where he *literally stabbed the planet* And even then it was causing the whole world to fall apart over time and destroyed a country-sized location entirely. It would be similar to Thanos fighting Darkseid, at best Sauron would be able to destroy one of Sargeras' avatars, but the Titan himself is a whole other story.
@Drocksas
@Drocksas Жыл бұрын
It's also worth noting that the winner of the fight is usually based on who would win the most often, not necessarily in the one animation we get (though this fight's animation was kickass!). There are definitely instances where Arthas could defeat Sauron, but more often than not Sauron would come out on top.

Honestly they didn't go nearly into the LOTR power levels and how OP Sauron actually is The Maiar and Valar in reality are up to Outerversal in power- (universal , above that there is multiversal , then hyperversal and only after that there is Outerversal) Even without this , the Sword that Sauron shattered is comparable to object which contained power of countless stars . Or the Maiar / Valar speed (which might interest you) being immesurable , they can quite literally go as fast as they want and can imagine . And if this insane power , speed and immortality wasn't enough - The One Ring's corrupting power actually scales with person's Power , Evil and Ambition (all pretty much defining characteristics of the Lich King as a character) meaning he would likely get corrupted anyways . *And final note , the One Ring could NOT be destroyed in any lava , it had to be specifically in Mount Doom where Sauron made it

Both characters embued physical items that can be destroyed with their essence in order to manipulate the living realm. Each one can't be destroyed on the "spirit realm" but they can be rendered impotent to a point. Problem is that both are able to affect the minds of the living and raise the dead. Actually, I think the Lich King is better at that since Sauron just obsirbs the souls and takes the power for itself. The Lich King is better at designating responsibility and giving his power to others. This means The Lich King has more ability to grow and develop and invest in other's growth and development. Sauron is too selfish and self-centered and thus is weaker as he's essentially a parasite absorbing the will and souls of those he subjugates. In other words, Sauron doesn't grow as fast in breadth and power as the Lich King does. For sure, Sauron's beginnings was as an offspring of a universal god, but he is merely a fallen angel who doesn't have the humility to learn and evolve.
@shawnparshall1165
@shawnparshall1165 Жыл бұрын
Sauron doesn't absorb souls, he is a trickster and tempter and he plays the long game. The Lich King is powerful but he isn't a divine being like Sauron, with the Ring Sauron is nigh unstoppable except by the Valar who are essentially a pantheon of archangels on par or greater than the Greek deities. Elendil and Gil-galad only killed him after a long battle in which they both died after a seven year siege that strained his powers after he had recently just rebuilt his physical body.

I'd like to be the first to say that I'm a huge fan of both LOTR and WOW, and have read most of the books in those works as well. So I dare say my comment will be food for thought. Objectively, the video is wrong. 1. Sauron lost his ability to morph after losing his body. 2. His armor and weapon are formed by his will with dark magic = not on the level of ancient artifacts capable of destroying Frostmourne. Even Sauron's body is created by the will and power of the ring = No blood. 3. the Lich King wasn't just a demigod like Sauron. He was the one who killed and enslaved the ancient demigods, demons and their magic. He literally had the power to kill and enslave creatures on the level of Balrogs and Great Dragons (creations of Morgoth), which even Sauron himself feared. Sauron was not afraid to go into only one type of conflict, and that was with mortals... and he was defeated by a mortal. 4 Sauron's real power has always been his strategic skills and the power of the ring to corrupt the souls of all who were in his presence. 5. Even if he didn't have the Eye of Acherus, the Lich King would have found out rather quickly during the duel what Sauron drew his power from. Bottom line, confirmed. This video is nicely done, but incredibly flawed done by people who may have had some sort of poll on Discord. The video would really make it look like there were 2 fights in reality. The first duel where the Lich King would cut off the ring of power. Sauron would have counted on that, like the good strategist he always was.He was counting on the Lich King taking the Ring and deploying it to usurp the new power, at which point he would usurp the Lich King and all his power. BUT Sauron wouldn't know that the Lich King had already experienced a battle of wills in such a powerful artifact. And that was when he, as Arthas, killed the soul of Ner'zhul (Lich King) while passing the power of the crown, which took 10 years. Thus, he would master the power of the ring and become an invincible force. P.S. There is much more power hidden in the Crown than in the Ring, which can be seen in the amount of destruction it will bring. After the Ring is destroyed, a volcano erupts and an earthquake destroys most of the army of Mordor. When the Lich King's crown is destroyed, the very fabric of reality is destroyed, breaking the barrier between the world of the living and the world of the dead. This comparison of power is legitimate, just as we can compare the size and mass of stars and the effects of their supernovae. The ring - a big supernova. The Crown - a giant supernova that went into a black hole. PS2: Here we are only talking about a 1v1 combat. In the context of armies, Sauron wouldn't stand a chance (LOTR 3 ghosts, imagine...). And even if Sauron had legions of Nazgholes, the Lich King would have no problem binding them to his will. Game, set and match - Lich King wins

Fun fact. Sauron WASN'T wrong. NO ONE was able to resist the influence of the ring long enough to destroy it, not even Frodo. Bearing Sauron's will and power that close to him for so long actually corrupted Frodo to the point that he was willing to KILL Sam in order to keep the ring for himself. It was actually Golem who destroyed the ring after he stole it back from Frodo, and even that was by accident. Golem was so happy to finally get his "precious" back after so long that he started to literally dance with joy and ended up falling off the bridge leading into the magma chamber of Mount Doom by accident, taking the one ring with him.
