Haha, been following your China trip closely. As someone who has been living and DJing in South China for 16 years now, I need to tell you that EVERYTHING you are experiencing is 100% normal here lol. Take it all in and enjoy because this country is totally unique from any other place in the world. I really can't believe that they just let you fend for yourselves at the train station though hehe. And last minute decisions from the authorities when they start getting super worried about crowd sizes is also normal. That creates massive pressure on the promoter who, in turn, pushes you to keep it tame. Technically speaking, every playlist performed in China must be approved in advance (with lyrics written out), but in practice I've never seen this enforced. Welcome to this great country and if you make it down to Shenzhen hit me up! Been a huge fan of yours since Covid :P

Just to clarify, reason why you can't access google and KZbin etc, is that those american companies do not agree to obey Chinese law when operating in China, that's why they got kicked out. But trying to ban or force sell tictok is another whole new level as tictok follows all rules and laws americans asked for

👍 a small correction if I may, they didn’t got kicked out, they decided not to operate in China when China asked them to comply with China’s regulations.
@block38807 ай бұрын
Not exactly correct. The earliest cause was Baidu's vicious competition as a Chinese Internet company. At that time, Baidu used google to search some technologies or methods to search violent and bloody pornographic content through frequently. In the end, Google’s search recommendations in China were filled with violent, bloody and pornographic content. Baidu's ultimate goal is to achieve commercial competition by use political means, which is caused gov mistakenly believe that Google deliberately harms the physical and mental health of Chinese people. After that, GOV found a non-targeted reason, such as not agree to obey Chinese law, and banned Google.
@naiyomotion7 ай бұрын
Interesting. What are the regulations they refuse to comply with? It's surprising that they would give up such a huge market - corporations will usually say up is down if it means they can earn money. I'd love to know what made them decide to give up on chasing China profits.

@@naiyomotion in a nutshell, China asked for “China’s data stays in China”. Hefei is NOT an international city in any sense, and it can be inexperienced in organizing a huge international event like the VAC music festival. Within two days, this event attracted a whopping audience of 126,000! This is the unprecedented number of audience in any outdoor event in the history of this city. Yeah, if you translate the word "bitch" into Chinese, it is a really really offensive and bad word to use in public. I know in English this word sometimes has a positive meaning and people use it to mean "sassy" or cool or they just joke around, but in Chinese, no one would joke around with their friends using the Chinese version of this word because it is so offensive. I bet the oganizers, especially in a small city like Hefei, probably don't understand English and the culture behond the language. We prepared various flags and banners, but on the day of the event, all the rules changed: Alcohol sales were prohibited, flags were not allowed, and there were even incidents of security using excessive force. The organizers were just as shocked and angry as we were. Despite the rain, all the ravers came to enjoy the music and celebrate the May Day holiday. Since I was at the event, I can tell you that the atmosphere was fantastic. Almost no one was standing still; everyone was immersed in the music. From the start, I was shouting James Hype b**ch and singing along until the end. I hope you can come back to China soon!! We are very grateful for the music and energy you brought us!! I've organized concerts in China, and we also advise performers to be mindful of their language. even including it in the contract. But there's no need to worry about getting caught. China is not as you might imagine; it's even more tolerant towards foreigners. It's not actually the government, the organizers, or the fans demanding this from you. Rather, it's some moral defenders who might see your performance. They would then make the organizers extremely, extremely embarrassed. This is also one of China's forms of political correctness. You don't need to worry about getting into trouble; it's the organizers who are worried about getting into trouble. Actually, you can do whatever you want on stage, as long as the moral defenders don't see it, there's no problem. The issue is that you have too many fans.

Welcome to Hefei, I hope that next year's festival will be bigger, with more people, a cooler stage and a better experience。 It was not an easy task for Hefei to hold such a large-scale electronic music festival for the first time.Too many new attempts, as well as the concerns of the authorities, have led to the organizers facing various constraints, so that this feast of electronic music in the rain does not seem to be as free-spirited as imagined. This is not just a problem in Hefei, but also in China, where only a small number of young people can get involved in the turbulent Western culture. But thanks to its large population base, even electronic music festivals, which are not mainstream in China, can attract a huge number of fans. Many cities in China are trying to enhance their influence and cultural heritage by holding various cultural events, such as music festivals, electronic music festivals, and rock events. Hefei, as an emerging city with scientific and technological innovation as the starting point, is also making such attempts after having a large youth population.

Surprised you have such a big crowd in Hefei! I've been to maybe 10 Chinese cities, and intend to visit another 10 or more. But Hefei never pop up as one of the Chinese cities on the list.

You only need to activate the roaming feature provided by your mobile network operator, and you won't need a VPN. You can directly access the internet. However, please note that you must use your own mobile data and cannot use Wi-Fi.

That grocery scene where James is asking "What's this" reminds me of that scene in Borat where he's asking the supervisor about every single product one by one😂

Another tip for using western apps without VPN in China: buy an esim card before you went to China, you have full access of youtube google and so on when you roaming there

China is what you will call a "liberal dictatorship". I'm Chinese and lived there since I was born, and thats exactly how I would categorise it. A country with barely any political freedom, but really a lot of day-to-day freedoms. A lot of things you can do in China, you can't do in the west. Also, Chinese laws are much more lenient in many areas as well.

They asked you to calm down Because if you don't calm down, the audience will become increasingly agitated, and with so many people around, it will be difficult for the police to manage any issues that arise. Chinese police are different from those in Europe and the United States; they do not carry guns or stun batons. No matter how chaotic the situation becomes, the police have to handle it with their own bodies.

I felt the same way when i was traveling in Japan, 90% of the people didn't speak English and 95% of their restaurants had no English menu except for those in the hotels. So what do i do? I learned Japanese. Problem solved! May be you guys can learn some Mandarin before your tour. Just like how we learn English so that we can at least communicate when we travel to UK or US! 😂😂😂😂

since when is VPN illegal? many foreign youtubers openly advertising VPN services all the time.
@scan43325 ай бұрын
Technically you are supposed to have a permit. Pretty much every academic, expat, business and multinational have one. But interestingly the government stance here is if you are smart enough to use a VPN you are smart enough to face the world. This is why there are 350 million people with VPNs and you don't see people getting shut down unless they are doing illegal stuff. Tourists roaming also don't face any restrictions. This is why young people here are incredibly smart and actually know a lot more about the world than we think. If you think about it if the government wanted to control everyone they would prevent them from travelling yet Chinese tourists are the biggest group globally by a mile.

The no swear rule is indeed vague. When the rules are up to interpretation, just don’t go too far overboard. Especially no sexually explicit swear phrase. Like you can’t shout the F-word excessively. But if you just bleed out occasionally, they might ignore it.

@Tommywanaka7 ай бұрын
Yes the cigarette smoking here in China is next level. Even at home in my apartment, I smell it wafting in with the breeze. A massive country collectively accelerating towards chronic disease. They don't know better; there's hardly any education on the effects of smoking.
