In the Fall of 2021 I went on a solo Backpacking trip into the Wild Sierra. I made camp, had dinner and late at night herd a series of strange and frightening sounds that made me feel threatened...I never told anyone what happened. Until Now!!

So Happy you had that whistle Chris !!!!! Sounds like it was a big foot and very interested in what/who You were. Stay safe and I am so pleased for you that winter is gone and you will be back in the environment that brings you joy; and we will continue to be the beneficiaries.

-> Or even possibly a Dogman; they don't like siren sounds or shrill, loud whistles, from what accounts I've heard.. But, most likely, a Bigfoot, judging by everything.. First Nations & Native Americans do not advise whistling in the woods at night, But, in this case, it was an Extremely High decibel whistle, & that was enough to deter whatever creature came near!! Probably wondered what else Chris had with him for deterrence!! ☺️ Divine Angelic Safeguarding, & Many Blessings, ALL!! 😻🙇🏻‍♀️🙏🏼🕊️👼🏻❄️🏔️🌄

Great story, I don't know about the thing that was making all the crashing noise but the growl huff sound I heard once, middle of the day, which turned out to be a bear in a huckleberry patch. I quickly moved on cause berries aren't that important. Just before that my son was with me and we had seen two cubs about a year old so I figured they belonged to the berry eater. Wasn't really too worried tho cause my son was carrying a 44 and had just gotten his expert marksman badge in the marines. Had I been alone it would have been a different story, lol.

Chris, The first time I went Elk hunting with my boss & lawyer at his Ranch near Mesa Verde Colorado. I had no experience 😂 Around midnight or early morning hrs, I heard some strange noises off and on for about 2 hrs. It kind of spooked me… The next morning at breakfast I asked them if they had heard the noise and they started laughing at me. They informed me that was Elk moving and the noise was them whistling😵‍💫

That was pretty scary Chris, because you did not get to see what that growl actually came from. I wouldn't want to go back there again just thinking about it possibly being a real Big Foot. You actually survived. You could have gotten killed in a vicious attack. So scary.

That's a situation where I'd be hoping there was a 'squatch involved - I'd be more comfortable with that than with a couple of grizzlies converging on my locale! At least the 'squatches seem determined to keep a low profile and that means maybe they prefer to let me live, whereas I don't know why a bear would care.

Chris, have a similar story. Was up At Eleanor Lake behind Naramata BC, right at the very top of the mountain, it’s a very remote and beautiful place; we actually had to clear fallen trees off the road to get up there. About 2:am something started walking around and around our tent, for about 2 hours; it smelled horrible, made a huffing grunting sound and rubbed against the tent. We were terrified as we thought it was a bear. As soon as it was light enough, and the smell and sounds could not be detected anymore, we literally rolled our tent and camp into a ball and fled the mountain. We had no food in the tent, it was in the trunk, but I’m now wondering, with the pushed over trees upon the road and the length of time it rubbed up against our tent, that it was maybe something else telling us to get the heck out of their territory. Well it worked; we did , and we never went back.

One of your Best Stories yet. Water & Woods attract everything. Climbing out of my tree stand at night, Oct bow hunting, I came face to face w several pairs of Red Eyes at eye level w me. I was far out in a swamp and All of ‘’us’’ were Startled. They silently disappeared and I was left alone w my heart beating quickly. Back at camp the others told me I was Not supposed to stay out there after dark. They insisted but wouldn’t say why!

I love the stories you tell, Chris. I backpacker and camped around the world for 63 years and never experienced any " bump in the night" stories. Kind of boring. 😴 During my hikes indaylight I encountered black bear without incident. The only scare I had was while taking care of personal business under a pine tree I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up...felt like I was being watched. As I slowly turned I spotted a mountain lion in a crouched position staring at me. I stood up, raised my arms and started yelling. My friends heard me and ran down the trail towards me. The cat turned and ran down the other side of the rock ledge

, definitely. Most wolves and bear are going to run upon hearing you or seeing you, I have had a bear come through my camp but it never showed signs of aggression or irritation and quickly wandered off, I 've also had wolves come into camp, steal some fish and wander away but for me, a mountain lion has that unpredictability factor that has me hoping I never come face to face with one.

That was hilarious, "Nowadays, I only camp in crowded campgrounds. There’s some strange noises for sure." I had to laugh because my husband and I got busy in our tent one time at the sequoias. When I tried to say hello to a lady and her daughters the next morning-I found out that their tent was pretty close to ours. All I got in response was a nasty glare from the mom. Sex ed came too early......oops! My bad.

Love your stories. No one can know if that is a sasquatch or not but, even if it was a bear, that's freaking scary. You stay safe out there! One of my neighbors heard a weird one note tooting outside in the dark behind her house. She freaked out, thought it was a mountain lion or a sasquatch. She posted it to social media. It turned out to be an owl. But I do live in sasquatch territory and one has been reported within a few miles of my house so it is a legit fear. Remember, though, if you howl into the void, the void might very well howl back...

That's why I appreciate so much to hear the stories of others.. some of us have experiences with an unknown something yet more on the lean of it having a different feel to it.. having something sound far in the distance, and then b line to your tent.. is something you felt to be unusual or strange or spooky..there are many degrees of encounters.. that help one connect a similarity.. every story has value, details of insight.. & bring awareness..how to fathom, the absolute shock it would be.. to feel a true visual encounter.. these stories really have my full attention.. thankyou for all your effort & care.. to open a space for anyone to come forward & share.. I really liked your idea of blowing your whistle or even having it.. I'm going to get one those..

A howl like that could bring a Sasquatch or Dogman to your front door.

Great story and beautiful “green screen” 😂. I just dragged out my hiking gear the other day to get it ready for the season. When I pulled out my storm whistle, my husband and I were talking about what a great predator deterrent it could potentially be, you just supported our hypothesis. Not sure I’d try it if I encountered a squatch though, I’d probably be too scared to blow! Keep up the great story telling!

Love your stories. I don't know how you can go out like that by yourself. I am the type who likes to go to parks and stay in a nice lodge. : )

Interesting story. Back in the early 80s, I took my future wife of 40 yrs. to the Southern Nantahala Mtns. She wasn't used to hiking and we had started up a steep loose black dirt trail straight up to the peak. She begged off and went back to the old Standing Indian AT shelter and I continued up. Literally hand and feet climbing but in heavy hardwood forest (nothing like it). A few minutes later, I hear something heavy following me. I assume (wanting it to be) that it's Donna changing her mind and call her name. Nothing. I continue up and whatever it was continued following me but I felt that it wasn't on the trail. When I would stop, it would stop. I was getting concerned as there are a lot of Black Bear in the So. Nantahala Wilderness Area. I turned and continued up and then heard the unmistakable sound of a large rotten log Crunch! At that point, I thought, I KNOW that's a bear. I did literally run to the bald at the top. I remember nodding and saying to myself, uh huh, uh huh and turning around and bumping my butt all the way down. Never saw it but thought for years that it was a bear, Now, not so sure. Rob in GA.
