The first country where Africans were brought to in the western hemisphere was the Dominican Republic. Not the United States. The first language Africans were forced to learn in the western hemisphere was Spanish. Not English. The first European last names placed on Africans were Spanish last names. Not English last names. Speaking Spanish doesn’t make you a Spaniard no more than speaking English makes you an Englishman. There are more people of African descent in Latin America than in the United States. The African diaspora did not start and end in the United States. Slavery started earlier in Latin America and slavery ended in the United States while it continued in Puerto Rico, Cuba and in Brazil. I’m AfroBoricua/Black and damn proud of it. I have been schooling people of African descent from Latin America since the late eighties. It sad that there are some people that are so ignorant. There’s Black people in every Latin American country. There’s no such thing as a Latino race. The term Latino has been placed on people who come from Spanish speaking countries and Brazilians. Latino is a culture and not a race. Culture and race are too different things. Saying you’re Dominican or Puerto Rican is no different than saying you’re an American. It’s a nationality. Are all Americans of the same race. No! Neither are all Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans etc. The sad thing is, as an AfroBoricua, our experience is unique. We are treated as Black in PR and by most people because of our features but there are some African Americans who will say that you are not Black. As if there are only Black people in the United States. I have experienced it myself. My family members as well. My aunt who was dark skinned with kinky hair told me that “they” don’t accept us as Black because that was her experience. And if anyone on planet earth saw her walking down the street, they would all think she is 💯% a Black woman. Not one person would take a look at her and think she is Puerto Rican because they are not accustomed to seeing Black Puerto Ricans. Not all Puerto Ricans look like Ricky Martin. Too Black in Latin America and not Black enough in the United States. My DNA has me at 34% African, 21% Indigenous and 45% European. In America that would make you Black with “Indian” in your family. My wife, whose Dominican, is 63% African, only 6% Indigenous and only 31% European. That would make her Black. We are technically multi racial but we identify as Black because that is how we are seen and treated. That has been our experience in America and abroad. For those Dominicans running around talking about “Soy Indio (I’m Indian)” or I’m White, STOP IT! Only a minuscule percentage of the population is White and absolutely none are “Indian”. The vast majority of you guys are Black. If it’s too difficult to understand, you could be Black (racially/ethically) and Dominican (culturally) at the same time. Many of the Tainos were fleeing Borinquen (Puerto Rico) because the Spanish enslaved, raped and murdered them. They brought over Africans in 1517 and enslaved them until 1873. They were forced to continue mining the gold until it ran out. They then went forced to work on sugar plantations. Africans weren’t brought to the United States until 1619 and slavery was abolished here in 1865. Some Black folks from Latin America need to stop acting like they are not Black and some Black Americans need to stop acting like they are the only Black people in the Western Hemisphere. Having the slave name Jackson doesn’t make you more Black than the slave name Ortiz. ✊🏽

You say Spanish enslaved africans in your country 1873, but dominicans says they were not slaves for Spain or the slavery was not harsh because spanish mixed with them, married the black to have a mixed population. They ever go further to say, slavery stopped in DR because Spain was too busy in war in Europe 😂. That's what they teach at school and keep on repeating I guess Spain abolish slavery only in DR because they loved dominicans and continued slavery in the rest of America because they hate them 😂.

This is a very loaded subject. Most Dominicans have more European DNA than African, yet we don't deny our African heritage. We are not "black" because we don't subscribe to the racial ideology of the US, and we also aren't "white" because that label didn't even exist when the Dominican Republic was settled . From the onset there was heavy mixing of the different populations on the island (Latins, natives, africans). We werent "colonized" , we were the colonizers. The reason you want to categorize us that way is because of your "one drop rule" which is non existent in Latin America. Those ideas of race were promoted by Northern european/German colonies of the north. Latin people (Italians, Spanish, portuguese) have always had color if you study the history of the Mediterranean. I support the empowerment of the African diaspora, I'm a big fan of Cheikh Anta Diop. I know we don't seem to fit neatly into your paradigm but ya'll need to ease up off us because that shit is getting corny already. God bless the Human race.

Dominicans don’t reject or deny their African ancestry. It’s very ingrained in our culture, and celebrated in our history. The public education system does a good job of laying it out to us from a very young age up until university. Read any Dominican history book, and see for yourself. There is no denying that lighter skin is generally perceived to be higher status and an attractive physical trait, but very little emphasis is giving to it in Dominican society beyond that. We don’t discriminate each other on the basis of color, and almost every Dominican family has a members with a wide range of skin tones: white, black and anything in between. You can find the darkest Dominicans holding the highest offices, Generals , bishops, Supreme Court justices, senate, presidential candidates and the most prestigious hospitals and houses of academia, you name it. I think this narrative that Dominicans are anti- black, racist or black-shamed, just puts on display the cultural and historical ignorance of these foreign Wokies who don’t study the history and culture of nations and their people but rather quote random headlines and articles written by people more ignorant than themselves. And yes, WE NO BLACK - (we mean African American when we say that). Which is Very far from denying our African ancestry.

Because if I’m obviously white however can not identify as white because of my Spanish background isn’t that the same for blacks in Spanish speaking countries. Yes they look black they are black but culturally they identify as something else.

because of colonialism, many darker skin people are sick. and it becomes amplified when they migrate to america. i have personally experienced this, from family members all the way to other students at university. my background is caribbean, but i am about jr's skin tone. i have experienced how my aunts, who look indian, kind of scorn my mother who is much darker than me. at university, even the indians or bengali who just got off an airplane last month try to avoid any contact with me until they find out that i am friends with most of the white professors. when they find that out, all of a sudden they start grinning when they see me. and most of them are darker than dark lol. it's as if they have to prove to everyone that they are not dark, especially to "black" people. jr man it's pretty sick. i do not have children, but i think all the time about how unhealthy it would be to raise a child in this type of environment. and not just that, it is also unfair to the child.

I live in Dominican Republic. I am black haitian. More than half of the local population is of Haitian (African) descent. These are blacks who chose to stay in the eastern part, before the island split in two, out of interest for the Spanish pros**tue who were exiled there. Even their famous "white" dictator Rafael Trujillo, who hated blacks, was the grandson of a black Haitian woman with whom he grew up in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, but whom he later chose to repudiate because of her skin color. Mestizos and blacks are everywhere in the D.R. doing hard labor or activities that require physical input. As for light-skinned people, you'll find them at major trade shows, business meetings, open spaces, politics....bref, anything done under an air conditioner. As if dark-skinned people were forbidden to participate.

@@freddyguzman2945 bro there are fully Black Dominicans. You acting like Domincans are a special race or something. Brazilians are mixed too but you don't see them pulling the same strings as some of these Domincans. Domincan is not even a race it is a nationality and ethnicity. The thing you got to realize is not all Domincans have the same genetics. You can go to Trinidad and find fully Black Trinidadians, Trinidadians who are mixed with Black and Indian, White Trinidadians, Indian Trinidadians and much more. You can go to Jamaica and find fully Black Jamaicans, Jamaicans who are mixed with Black and Indian, White Jamaicans, Indian Jamaicans and much more too. Brazilians have more mixed blood than Domincans and you never see Black Brazilians saying they're not Black. I will tell you this. Nobody in Brazil is pure Black and not even the Afro-Brazilians are fully Black. Everybody can be mixed-race. You don't got to be of Domincan descent to be mixed-race.
