The main sponsor for his channel is also Brownell's, which is one of the biggest firearms distributers and also one of the biggest 2A Advocate companies in the country. Either way, why do you think it's a requirement to talk about political topics when making gun videos? Some people just like to come and watch unadulterated destruction or see interesting and unique guns (this video is a perfect example) that most people don't have or have ever even seen. I myself, as I'm sure many others are, already well aware of anti gun arguments and the push for new anti gun laws. So this is actually not a Railgun but is actually a Gauss rifle or Coilgun. Railguns use an actual rail which the projectile is in contact with while it's accelerating, this allows them to launch projectiles much faster, but they wear out very quickly. A coil gun as the one Matt has uses shifting electromagnetic fields to "pull" the projectile forward, once in motion it won't be making contact with the barrel.

Built a real one a few years back. The rails were made of copper bussbar. The projectile was a slug of beryllium copper with a plastic sabot and the pusher was made of aluminum. Several racks of maxwell labs HV capacitors plus some big spark gap switches. Was awfully inefficient and the rails needed to be cleaned and adjusted after 4 shots. It is essentially a super high speed linear motor.

Big difference between a railgun and a coilgun. A coilgun is what you have, it uses coils to propell iron or steel objects that will fit in the barrel. A railgun uses 2 parralel rails to launch iron or steel projectiles, causing damage to said rails every time it is fired.
@realw27523 жыл бұрын

I also used the charging circuit and button to charge the series of capacitors. Used some kind of thick straw or plastic tube and wound an electro-magnetic coil around it coming from the capacitors. When you short the capacitors / close the circuit, it will grab the ball / nail or whatever and instantly discharge it through the coil. Not trying to be the "actually," guy, but there's a difference in operating principles between railguns and coilguns - an extremely badass example of the latter is what you've got there. A Railgun uses an induced magnetic field in the projectile which repels it from the magnetic field in the rails. Coilguns meanwhile use series of magnetic coils to accelerate inert metal projectiles by pulling them through the center, similar to how a solenoid in a relay or electric valve works. As you've beautifully demonstrated, coilguns are pretty impressive at lower scales, but manufacturing large electromagnet assemblies for heavier caliber coilguns is a challenge. As your ordnance caliber and available electrical power grows, railguns begin making more sense, since you can theoretically brute-force just about anything that'll sit snug between the rails and produce a magnetic field into flying downrange. As a railgun shot involves an electrical circuit carrying *hilarious* amounts of energy being broken as the projectile launches away from the rails, there is a very pronounced muzzle flash and discharge sound. Coilguns definitely have the advantage in terms of steath there.

I have been working on making a practical rail gun for several years now. My progress thus far has taken me to a functional, lethal, one shot, muzzleloading rail musket. it can pass a baffleboard test, but its still got some issues. I want to make a semi auto version next. If it ever happens, ill make sure to let you play with the prototype weapon matt. EDIT: This got a tad more attention than i thought, and fear it will get more, so let me rain on some parades; this projects is a LONG way from being a weapon with similar functionality and practicality to the AR-15. I am currently trying to find a way to source some expert help; specifically regarding some mechanical engineering things and someone more knowledgeable about magnetic fields than myself. I am an expert in electrical theory, and have some gunsmithing skills, but I feel like someone with more knowledge of magnetic feilds than myself could work with me to optomize some things so that we can decreases the size of the cap(s) needed to fire the thing, witch will allow for faster charge time, and more caps for less weight; I have several ideas to decrease the cool down time the caps need to charge between shots. Further, I need some help from a mechanical engineer regarding the electrical feed system. Projectiles are also a big issue; you can't do the whole engraving thing to get bullet spin because you loose a TON of energy from the friction, and because steel barrels interfere with the magnets. I have several different ideas to fix this that should all theoretically work; but they need to be tested, the working musket at the moment uses steel ball bearings as ammunition. The "stopping power" currently being achieved is (i think, don't own a chronometer, just guessing) is from the large bullet weight currently being used, rather than bullet speed.

I wonder how combat using railguns / coil guns would sound and feel like. Assuming future railguns/coil guns don't produce noticeable sound: no muzzle reports of firearms since there's no gunpower, *only the supersonic cracks of the projectiles* (Yes, I know). I can imagine you'd hear no loud gunshots, only the shouting of commands and injured people screaming + the couple odd explosions. Instead, you'd mostly hear these sudden *CRACK* s with railgun/coil gun projectiles flying past you at 3000 mph, probably with scary rates of fire. But otherwise complete silence. No muzzle flash reports of gun shots, locating enemies by vision would be hard. Then again thermal vision or other location methods will probably be on every soldier at that point. Edit: pointed out the supersonic crack since it was there from the beginning. People also mentioned the possible sparks and flame coming from the railguns big current, which I didn't consider.
