When i was working at an auto parts store we had one instance of a customer bringing back two brake discs. For a short time circa 2010, I actually had a PC running an Athlon II X2 245, which I suppose is very close in performance to the B22 in the video. It was actually better than I had expected and ran all the essentials I needed at acceptable speeds. Emphasis on "needed", not "wanted". It was a stopgap PC, because I was short of cash at the time, but needed a new PC urgently for work. I chose an AMD processor because I wanted to easily upgrade it later, which was a no-brainer with AMD's single AM3 socket of the time, but impossible with Intel, which had *three* different sockets for its Core 2s of the time (yes, of the *same generation* -- Intel was once even worse with its socket folly than today!). So, I stretched my limited budget to get the best mainboard I could. That meant one with the 970 chipset, AMD's second-best at the time, so it was a completely disproportionate configuration -- sort of running a current Athlon 200GE on a shiny B550. But it made sense because of the planned upgrade. And it served its purpose of being an interim solution that allowed me to do my work. When my finances improved a couple of months later, I got a Phenom II X6 1090T, which was AMD's top of the line at the time, and swapped it without a glitch, to a dramatic increase in performance. The X6 was so good that it was my loyal companion for *10 years,* and it could have been in use even longer if I weren't wary of a major hardware failure without compatible replacement parts readily available in the market. Now I have a Ryzen 5 3600X running on a nice Asus X570 and that promises to be my companion for many years as well.

It's interesting to see how the returns of electronics have evolved to protect against this sort of behavior. I remember returning electronics in the old days, and nobody even looked at the stuff you were returning. Was something vaguely electronic-looking in the box you brought back to the store? Good enough! That changed - at places like Best Buy, they'll actually bring over the Geek Squad employees to examine the merch and make sure it is exactly what you originally bought. Obviously this process isn't fool-proof, but I have to think it catches a lot of the scams.

Yep I know as one of the geek squad members eventually manager that inspected the returns in some case took over customer service so they can go on break. Yes nowadays unfortunately more common for return fraud then it was back then. I seen wood to mirrors and boxes resealed to appear as unopened. Some more sophisticated scammer would actually swap out item with exact item but broken and change serial, we can tell as pry marks if external drives or item clear been used but yet box was sealed? Some scammers would run out door, some more professional ones would try to explain it. We usually didn’t call the cops and just embarrassed them and not except any returns from them. Now if they were caught multiple times then LP would get cops involved and they get charged with theft by deception. It one of the reason some items on eBay broken go for as near as working on hotter items. Scammers by blacklisted phone and swap boards, or internals on other item to do return fraud or exchange for brand-new item as go for double when new sealed. Now a reseller and see it on return pallets I buy from Amazon and other sources. So is a huge problem online as well. It is to the point I inspect every item and test even if appear to be brand new still sealed before reselling or bring to friend warehouse as we sell to public on weekends to give general public deals. One particular item was a delonghi espresso machine on pallet. Someone bought a cheaper version on Amazon obviously did return fraud and returned a more expensive broken one as was broken due to brewer was jammed and was pretty clean shape. I ended up repairing and keeping it as was a Dinamica Plus that pretty good once I repaired it.

Did have one case that a legitimate customer returned AirPods due to fakes were in box and was due to customer service didn’t inspect box when it was returned first time around as was sealed and consider low value where a manager or Geek squad agent doesn’t step in. Knew he was legit as he was arguing and legitimately piss to the point he was wanted to fight the lady. So pulled him aside to calm him down explaining not worth it and only help him once he calm down and then once he started cooling down and was respectful again had him explain in detail and took over and look back at history of item and saw it was returned before. So honor it and gave him additional gift card for the hassle he also apologize to the lady for obscene language as part of the deal and had customer service have everyone of those inspected and I pulled others out of stock that were returned before and sure enough found a few were swapped with fakes. Ended up catching the people as they tried again and play it off like they getting refunded but didn’t have enough cash in register to buy time as course they paid cash and had LP pull video of them returning AirPods before and LP took over and had them arrested and prosecuted. Normally don’t go that far as just banned them but they did it to many times and then the upset customer had to refund and give extra gift card to.

Hi Linus, Just started to following your KZbin channel last week. This video is very interesting regarding fake CPU. I have been in this industry in Victoria, BC since Aug-1994, now I think what I am about to tell you happened over 20 yrs ago , so it should be di-classfied, and I can tell you without worrying to get in trouble. Back in Intel 486 DX2-66 Days, one of major distribution companies in Canada with office in Richmond, Toronto, and Calgary if I remembered correctly, this company's name starts with a nubmer, and a letter so likes XX Micro Computer distribution Inc. Anyway, they have factory in China, so what they would do is for example order 10,000 pieces of 486DX 33 in OEM Tray version, and same quantity of 486DX2-66 in Retail packaging with Intel HSF, then they would sand of the marking on the 486DX33, and remark them with 486DX2-66. Put the remarked 486DX-33 in DX2-66 Retail packaging, and resale as retail in distribution channel. And the retail 486DX2-66 would get sold as OEM cpu, OR they would order another batch of 486DX4-100, and proceed with the same scam.... pretty brilliant right?! LOL (BTW, if you compare a real DX2-66 to the remarked DX33, you can see about 0.5mm thinner on DX33, because original layer with Intel marking was sanded off...)

If you get sent the right things and ordered the correct things your fine and likely won't ever think about deliding the CPU, its not worth it for pretty much everyone.

I use to work as a retail manager and saw customers swap things around for returns or purchases all the time. People absolutely do things like this for all sorts of products. I work in a automotive parts retail store and people try to return there old parts claiming that's what was in the box.. But we open every box and show them the part is in good shape and new when they buy it so it usually doesn't work. But if they call corporate and lie to them about it, corporate will tell us to just return it.. Even though they know they're being scammed because "it's about customer loyalty"....... 😐😐😐😐 Yeah.. In the end we all just end up paying more because that loss gets factored into pricing of general merchandise.

This type of stuff happens A LOT, but it is essentially a drop in the bucket for these giant corporations. Linus referenced a "warehouse worker" facilitating the return, but most likely it is an 18y/o who isn't paying too close attention at the customer service counter. Working at BBY for 8 years, I have seen a lot of this. Years ago we had a guy who would buy all the new movie releases, open them, steal the digital code, re-shrinkwrap them, and return them. PS5 removed from box and replaced with heavy stuff, seen that too. Just the other month, we had some crackhead come in, take a Dyson vacuum off the shelf and try to return it for cash without a receipt. Literally just the other day, we had a geek squad employee from another store return a graphics card to us. Upon closer inspection later that day, we realized he swapped out a cheap graphics card in the more expensive housing of a 3080 (or something else expensive). We re-watched the security footage, looked up the transaction, and called the other best buy and let management know. Not sure if he got fired or not.

It's probably third-party seller on the BestBuy website... if you haven't noticed, yet... But the BestBuy website now offers items from third-party sellers.

@9:44 I can hear the struggle of Alex hauling the 80lb vise over there only for Linus to not use it at first
@dmmartindale3 жыл бұрын
I'll bet that vise costs more than the CPU - the proper CPU. That's a milling machine vise, not a bench vise.

I've got an x2 250, an x2 280, and an x4 980BE in a box. The x280 unlocks an extra core in the bios features, sad the 4th core wasn't stable enough to unlock. The Phenom quad core was overclocked daily to 4.5GHz with a Noctua NH-D15, no small feat when the TJ Max is 68°C if I remember correctly.

This reminds me of what happened around the time Zen 3 launched. There was a couple guy down here that had gotten there hands on like 3 or 4 CASES of old ass Zen 1 Athlon processors, & we're gradually buying Zen 3 processors, delidding both the old Athlons, and Zen 3's, doing a switcheroo like in this vid. They got arrested thankfully, but not sure how much time they got. What's worse, the platform for both was the same (AM4) so it was hard as hell to catch

So this is what i think happened: Somebody bought a R5 3600 Kept the real CPU and put an old one that you can get from AliExpress with the engraving Returned it with the Fake CPU Have seen something similar with GPUs

Don't even need the engraving since you can buy custom Copper IHS.

I'm thinking this as well. This thing have happened since the dawn of returns / money back. People replace contents with what "looks" like the real product, but replace with fake or broken.

@@odinsplaygrounds and because of shit like this, at Office Depot it's apparently been a common issue with printers that we now check serial numbers on the printer since we can't resell them, they have to be shipped back to the manufacturer which we only get credit for it after it arrives.

that CPU and MB I used to have before they both literally burnt to a crisp, replaced it for a sempron 140 and half patched MB, which funny enough is a friend of the athlon x2, sadly no AMD mb to unlock it's potential, this is on a old rig though. pd: Currently ordering a R9 5900s notebook but if only amazon would charge the dang card already its stuck on "pending shipping"
@curtmack3 жыл бұрын
9:06 I have seen that happen before! When my last CPU died, it got stuck on the Mass Effect 2 loading screen... I let it sit there for about ten minutes before finally giving up, and when I turned the computer off, it never booted again. I had always suspected something like that happened, with the CPU dying but the GPU chugging along, but seeing it happen here confirms it in my mind.
