I’d read it. 😉 Also, I know I’m coming in late … but how ‘bout this: the prophecy revolves around the “mirror”, but it’s been misinterpreted. The dragon IS the mirror, as it sees through to the soul of the wisher and reflects their true self back to them. If the wisher can embrace their true reality, the dragon finds them worthy.

I am so fascinated by how fast you come up with an entire outline like that! It seems so simple when you do it. When I try making up a story, I always get stuck on tiny details immediately. Like, I create these problems or plot twists for my characters, but then I can't figure out how to solve them, so I just quit. I think it's really hard to find that balance between too vague and too precise.

Honestly would love to see this get written. I really love the idea of an assassin woman who dresses beautifully or seems to have a gentle look to her despite her darker ambitions. For one, it hints to another side of her. But also, it'd help her blend into places where she could do her job unnoticed. It shows that she's versatile. The only thing I was kinda sad didn't make it into the outline was the community voted grumpy guy. I think having him be all the things you outlined, including having a "life of the party" and cheerful disposition for his public appearance while being a bit sardonic and grumpy when with her would've been interesting. She can be sharp witted and sarcastic, but she actually does have a sweet side that is gentle which comes out moreso when she's vulnerable would've also been interesting to see.
@AbbieEmmons9 ай бұрын
Yes I agree!! 👏 I feel like most assassin (or badass) female characters fit into this very standard "tough and mean" cookie cutter, so it would be nice to see some variation. And yes, I agree the guy could definitely have a grumpy side that comes out when he's not people-pleasing 🤣
@IzzyMarrie9 ай бұрын
@@AbbieEmmons I tend to love characters who seem all nice on the surface but are kinda dickish. Astarion from Baldur's Gate 3 is part of the reason for that. But yes!! We need more sweet looking, flower loving female baddies!
@meganhuffmanwrites9 ай бұрын
I feel like the grumpy part of the trope for the guy is heavily informed by the fact that he feels so out of place in his environment and among his family. He obviously isn't accepted by his family and he bears the weight of that criticism. Over years, that can cause a person to go from sunny and constantly trying harder to becoming hard and cyncial inside because they just "know" that they will never live up to expectations and can never gain the approval of the people they most aim to please. That could be really fun to explore for the trope. Conversely, the sunshine disposition of the girl strikes me as manifesting in the story in a completely forced way from the female character. She is laying on the sunny bright positivity to gain the prince's trust and that isn't really who she is, maybe? @@AbbieEmmons

@PrincessDonuts9 ай бұрын
Maybe the prince can be an outcast AND funny/goofy/charming at the same time because : 1. The king has considered the prince to be unworthy to be king since his childhood, maybe because of some sacred oath, or rite of passage, because of his public speaking fear or something similar. 2. Because he did not have his father's favor, the others in the palace might have ostracized him, like the nobles and his brothers 3. He's awkward, maybe shy because of the isolation and is not the best at socializing, but maybe sneaks out once and meets the guards of the palace and finds loyal friends in them? They might not know that he is the prince, but they're comfortable around him and like him. Maybe he goes to the towns with them and sees the conditions of the peasants and how they live. They could be suffering or something maybe, possibly because of his father's misgoverning (he could be showing favoritism to the nobles), and this becomes something the prince fixes later on in the end when the king is dethroned.

Why be so conflicted over whether the idea of a "soft," girly girl could work? Sure, it can-ever heard of the term "pretty poison"? Have her lure her prey to their deaths by way of food and drink, then poison them, probably via some deadly form of flower extract to complete the "pretty" motif. Overt kindness covering covert cold-bloodedness is truly chilling, and potent, so writing such a character is MORE than intriguing to me. Having her being a poisoner would fit her as also a spy and assassin, and if so, who is she doing this for? What are her loyalties and how was she trained? How much remorse does she feel? The tension and mistrust betwixt her and whoever her love interest is start to write themselves. A strong female character need not know martial arts nor have great physical strength to have power, folks; why beat them up when you know how to manipulate them? A poisoner and manipulator whilst appearing classically feminine would be a GREAT complement. What if she's killed someone he seeks to avenge, and they're falling for each other? Or she realizes she has to kill either him, or someone he holds dear? What if she has to comfort him after she's murdered his mother, say, and now he's cursing out poisoners in particular as incorrigible cowards whilst swearing vengeance on whoever did this? There's no easy resolution, is there?

Incorporating the IKEA effect with your readers. Devious. I like it. Edit: 21:27 your book sounds interesting so far. Will this be a rom-com? Or at least comedy scenes for catharsis? Edit: 30:56 answering your question: my ideal “ingredients” is a fantasy/paranormal thriller with a romance subplot and a comedy character / plot device to breakup the heavy scenes. I’m not too picky about characters. I just can’t stand martyrs or the ones who grieve or hold pity parties for many, many pages. I read for escapism. I don’t want to be stuck with a depressing character. I’ve already got real life and the news to depress me.

right??? i wrote a reddit post asking for this, and I was literally MOCKED for wanting to see people plot their stories... "do you like to watch paint dry? wanna visit your neighbours when they pay their bills?". good thing I already had abbies video in my watchlist haha.. though some actually gave me good advice. brandon sanderson have a couple of livestreams writing stuff, for example.

The idea that comes to mind right of the bat at the thought of forbidden romance and mistaken identity is that two people -who hated each other- fall in love. One of them has their identity undercover for which ever reason and they later come to realise that they come from opposing family lines or species that cant be together but its too late cause they've already fallen in love.

The way you were able to think of the whole thing like that is impressive, though in fantasy novels, I tend to look more for the fantasy part, thats why my book, very detailed but doesn't have a concrete story line had been going on for like 2 years now and I'm not even half way done. This video would probably help me figuring out how to write my characters, anyways a very helpful and captivating vid!

This reminds me a lot of polls that I conducted years ago in a homebrew D&D forum to vote up an entire campaign setting. The results of the polls were very interesting, not what we expected, and not what we would have always chosen on our own. But it was great learning experience, and I'm still proud of our results. It took us over two years to publish, but we did complete it eventually.

Male writers: "Slay The Dragon!" Female writers:"That would be animal cruelty let's find another way around" Edit: I'm not trying to stereotype or anything it was just a joke

I would look for something else too, but only because "Slaying the Dragon" is too cliché. Either they kill another monster, or the dragon was a person in the end and they have to persuade it, or the dragon doesn't exist in the end... Or all of that at once.

Thank you for having the writing community/ your followers involved with the ideas behind this new WIP. You have made us feel seen and also are writing a story not only that you enjoy, but that we all will enjoy based on popular demand. I hope that the writing community will continue to be involved in Project Dragon 🐉 and that we will have more opportunities to contribute to the formation of this story. Thank you for creating the link to follow along with your journey. We as a community appreciate you and your hard work! Rock on! 🤘🏻❤️ @AbbieEmmons

MAYBE because the dragon is killed, that automatically meant that the king would also be 'dethroned' but the two MC's didn't know it at the time. When they return home, no matter the cost, they find that by slaying the dragon, they have 'slayed' the evil king as well. Such a great story!!
@usdutchkitty9 ай бұрын
I was thinking that the dragon is only "slain" by self-sacrifice by the person/persons involved. It can be a sudden twist on the "slay the dragon" trope, like... it is an extension to who might be worthy of "The wish mirror". What are dragons known for? Being greedy. Even though the prince is wanting his dreams to come true, he's being greedy. What if the dragon is a reflection of "greed" and maybe, in the battle against it, declarations are made and once the prince wants to forgo his wish, his greed, to save the assassin, the dragon sees that the prince is selfless, and, as an extension of the mirror... I see this in my head as almost illusionary crystal-glass magic shows around the dragon, breaking and it is actually becomes the item. So another twist on the "slay the dragon" trope. You're only worthy if you slay your greed.
@jpainter71479 ай бұрын
Maybe the prophecy is ambiguous and it is taken to mean that the dragon needs slaying, but actually it meant the king needed dethroning the whole time
@usdutchkitty9 ай бұрын
Maybe, I just let my brain go as she was trying to plot out the self-sacrifice/dragon bit. My D&D brain turned on at that point of "oh, there's a classic but there could be a really good twist if played right"@@jpainter7147

I just realized how your story could be altered. The prince could be the son of a mafia boss(which is another version of a king) and the assassin a law enforcer sent to apprehend him which would lead to his execution.

The whole Softcore asthetic for the assassin kinda reminds me of a character from one of my favorite book series! "The City Between" (Spoilers) Basically, the assassin in that is an EXTREMELY genteel man, who wears a houndstooth jacket, and acts like the perfect gentleman! ...And happens to string people up with their intestines hanging out...

Very cool idea, but the female lead upsets me. You prescribed a past for the male character, his fear of being useless goes away because he came to this himself, but you came up with a denouement for the heroine, that she does not achieve her freedom herself, but receives it with a snap of the fingers. It's not only boring, but also sad because the main male character got development, but the female character didn't. You even described why he has fears, but the female character doesn’t even have a past, she’s just a prisoner in prison... super sad. Of course, I understand that the reader should perceive themself through the main female character, but not like that... (Sorry for my language, I'm not native)

The juiciest obstacle has to be the fatal flaw. In this case the fatal flaw is a dark secret, but a fatal flaw coming between two fated lovers is always delicious. The meet cute is easy. He almost gets them both killed when they meet, but she's able to save them from his actions. Cue enemies to lovers theme song. Is the chaotic sunshine hiding his tragic past with a cheerful front? The female gives a soft presentation to hide her work as an assassin. She's actually quite kind but professional, so she only kills those she's sent to kill. Her government sent her to stop the Chosen One of Prophecy who will bring the Apocalypse. So how does she save the man she fell in love with and the world at the same time?
