I went on a two-week trip around the world a few months ago and my travel vest weighed over 5lbs. I used a Tilly vest (which my dad always used on his travels) and put most of my electronics in it and kept a plastic bag in my personal item that I could put my vest in and place under the seat in front of me. I never had a problem with any of the 14 flights I took

I love it! I think you could take this to the next level by finding a compression packing cube that perfectly fits in the back pocket of the vest, then you can just slip it out when you're on the plane.

Ok Scotty vest is great no question. I used to wear cargo pants with lots of pockets and a jacket with lots of pockets. Wear two shirts or your jumper as well. I used to hide my laptop down the back of my jeans with a wide belt with a big jacket over the top . Just get the carry on weighed, get the weight ticket, back to bathrooms, unload , repack into carry on. In Oz they weigh carry on as you line up to board, like 30 mins before. Get in early for the easy re pack. Done it a dozen times and saved at least 50$ each time. The computer and chargers are really heavy so keep them out of the weight. Carry all HEAVY stuff on your person for the carry on "weigh in", phones chargers cords computer. You can also buy a light weight hand operated vacuum pump. Place gear into vacuum bags, remove air and seal, they come down to nothing. Can even re open and add a bit more and repeat. Considering I weigh under 60 kg I feel very very ripped off paying for excess baggage when people three times my size pay same as me. Its a long story, but ive been stuck travelling all over europe for 3 years and only travel with carry on and what we can hold on our bodies. We live for three months easily with two carry on bags before returning to home base, but could basically live out of those bags.
@ProjectUntethered22 күн бұрын
I totally feel you - you gotta do what you gotta do! Sounds like you have the perfect system! I didn't know it was the norm to weigh at the boarding gate in Australia - good to know!

I have been flying internationally with my Scotty Vest Coat for years! It typically isn’t as over stuffed as yours but still weighs about 30 lbs. I have my rolling Away carry on, my personal item (Usually a small backpack or computer case on the top of that and then I just drape the coat over the extended suitcase handle. I’ll sometime have my collapsable water bottle clipped onto the coat loop which helps hold it on the handle. I was scared the first time they stayed it but it’s never been questioned! While I’m flying, I just hold it between my legs resting the weight on the ground and then fasten my seatbelt around the top of it holding it in place during the flight
@ProjectUntethered21 күн бұрын
Sounds like a smart system! Yeah I normally don’t cram it as full as I did in the video, this was just an experiment to see what was possible haha

Instead of the packing cube in the cabin there at the end, wouldn't it be a bit better to have one of those nano (packs down to the size of your palm) day totes or backpacks and unload it all to it? Once you are in the plane they don't care how many bags you have. You could also leave the personal item backpack on the overhead bin and keep the packable tote/backpack under the seat and vest on or in that bag as well if it all fits into it.
@ProjectUntethered22 күн бұрын
That’s another good idea! Although if my ticket doesn’t include a carry on, I don’t like to use the overhead bin space (unless it’s empty)

I flew with checked luggage, but I had lots of camera gear I wanted to have in carryon. Also I had several batteries for camera and drone and powerbanks which needed to be in carryon. Yeah, this is cool. I went to Vegas a lot in my youth and one year I went four times. One of those times, I was invited to a little blackjack tournament which was on a Saturday and a Sunday. I set myself up well like this too. Booked red eye flights for Friday night and Monday morning not taking any extra days off. That was before ScotteVest was a company. But I stacked my clothes and only carried a backpack. Undies, swim trunks, cargo shorts with some personal stuff in pockets, and dress slacks on top. Two Tshirts, a dress shirt and tie, and leather blazer. I did pack extra socks, undies and an extra hat, different from the wide brim fedora I wore. Extra shoes, because you've got to have both nice shoes easy to remove and comfy sneakers on a trip to Vegas, right? I'm not surprised that you didn't have trouble, you didn't look all that weird. And I AM surprised people don't do more of this. It's always cold on flights, especially the red eye flights which aren't fully booked. I like a 75 seat MD80 with only twenty people on it, it's like being the only cool kid on a flying bus! Just sit anywhere!

I am very impressed with the SCOTTeVEST you've shown. I never thought a vest like that could hold a lot of things. I sure will get one for my travels next year. I can see the advantages of having that vest especially when you want your most important items with you when you travel. Let me say that good the technique not to be stopped or questioned despite your bulging vest works for you ( a white guy) but I hate to say this but I am doubtful if the technique will work for a colored person or Middle Eastern looking guy. I've travelled enough and seen enough to know that the latter group of people will be flagged or will be closely scrutinized.

For comfort on the plane, most (all???) allow a coat or jacket which does not count as an "item" if you board while wearing it. Remove any items that you might want during the flight (I start with those in my "personal item") then place the vest in the plastic bag and put it in the overhead bin. Just don't forget it when you get off the plane. Once my daughter traveled with her "larger" jeans over her tighter jeans and at least 3 tops when she realized that her luggage was going to be too heavy. For domestic flights in the US, I stick to Southwest--2 checked bags at no additional fee and cost is less than the big name airlines. Plus they use the two most common airports that I use!

lol…I have to take off my loaded vest for TSA. They’ve made some remarks, I got a lot of raised eyebrows (one asked me if I really thought it was worth it), but never had to change or leave anything. In the US, TSA does not care or regulate how many bags or how much stuff you have, they are just-and only-looking for certain banned items. You can send a LOT through TSA then combine after you pass through, if needed. It’s the airlines, at check in and especially the gate, that will limit what you carry on.

Dude you are late to the game. I have had my ExOfficio Flyq vest and puffy jacket for over 10 years. The vest has probably 10 pockets and jacket closed to 20. … I’m not sure so don’t hold my words, “normal people” never gonna need that many pockets anyway. I bought them for passing through airport security without having things all over the place. I’d lost coins, dropped keys, IDs , etc, one time I even forgot my watch. So, I bought the vest for warm weather travels and jacket for cold. By the way, the ExOfficio Flyq puffy jacket can also be turned into a neck pillow when needed. Very convenient.

Hi Mr Untethered one factor you didn't think about and it might be the reason you weren't busted most airlines allow a personal item and a carry on security probably thought you were just substituting your carry for that loaded jacket you should have tested carry on, personal item and the loaded jacket to see how it would play out
@ProjectUntethered22 күн бұрын
Security generally doesn’t care about how many bags you have, they’re just responsible for making sure you aren’t carrying anything not allowed on the plane :)
@fitfighter2422 күн бұрын
Then who is it that enforces the strict carry on limit if that's at the gate maybe they too didn't stop you due to believing you were substituting your carry on allowance for the loaded jacket
@RKirby15 күн бұрын
As long as you don't take the jacket off at any point in the flight and you fit within the arm rests I think it's fine if you put that jacket in the overhead you should get charged for it, or if you spill over 1/2 inch in to another seat or the isle you should get charged for 2 seats. If you can't afford the ticket DON"T fly.
@abark22 күн бұрын
QRO airport. No one would care at security. And most of the gate agents don't actually work for the airline. The only thing they would charge for would be large wheeler bags. And Volaris flight attendants are highly unlikely to say anything about putting items in the overheads.

I always wanted one, but when I saw one at a thrift store, it was way too heavy, as you can imagine all the extra fabric needed for all these pockets. I forget things in 7 pockets (pants and jacket), can't imagine 22 pockets. lol Westjet in Canada just ruled that you can not do carry on with the basic fair unless it is transatlantic or transpacific flights. So they give you an upfront "lower price" then up that price by charging you to check in your bags. Westjet can suck my balls. When in my own country, I take one carry on and ship back anything I buy rather than pay these scammers. It is a scam when you offer one price than jack it up with this, that, and the other fee.

Yeah I agree, many airline policies are greedy money grabs. Do you know which style you saw at the thrift store? I purposely chose the lighter weight ones because I’m always in hot weather.

Cool for the airline section, but you do realize that you do not need the TSA section right? They are not the airlines and thus do not know how many bags you are allowed, or how big they are allowed to be. This vest honestly looks kinda sketchy from a TSA perspective, so why not just put everything in the packing cube for security? Plus then you don't have walk around with all your stuff tight up on your body up to that point. Heck if hand space is an issue, drawstring bags take just as little space.

Truth be told, (in the US) TSA is only concerned with WHAT you're packing. TSA does not give a single care how you pack your stuff as long as it fits through the X-ray machine. So really the airline gate person and MAYBE the person at the check-in desk are the only people who really care -- if they care.

From this experiment it seemed like they definitely didn’t care :)

I have it and used for first time work fabulous. When traveling on subway with it got a seat because they thought I was pregnant when I I zipped it up. Lol😂

I’ve never had to pay for luggage. I just bring my carryon and one personal item.

The seats are small. The neighbours would be very angry if someone would put too many things in his jacket.

I heard you get to have a pillow So fill up pillow case with clothes
@MyAccountGmail215 күн бұрын
not anymore - gone are the days of comfy accessories "not counting"...the airlines have been cracking down of late, starting to count neck pillows, regular pillows, blankets, belt bags (fanny pack, slings), towards the single allotted "personal item". Best to maximize whatever is worn on your person. Seems the layering of clothing may be the best bet in the war on the latest airlines money-grab! 🧳🎒✈🤷🏻♀

If they search the jacket, it's no different than your bags so not really a big deal

Pretty sure only airline management cares about the lost sales opportunity. The crew have too many other things to do to both with this sort of thing.
@ProjectUntethered22 күн бұрын
Some crew can be pretty dang strict, it always confuses me why they care so much (unless their bosses are watching)
@bettyparker331714 күн бұрын
I fly 1-2x a month, using maybe 3 airlines, and gate crew and other staff absolutely does “care.”. They enforce those rules like crazy. I can kinda understand bc I’ve seen so many fights over carry-on space. But even when there’s obviously no space problems, they will be hardline. Best guess is managers watching somehow, or fear being tattled on by other crew or passengers.

From behind when walking down the airplane aisle, your vest was sticking out on the sides pretty far like you had wings, a wide rectangle on your back. I can only imagine if it hit some Karen in the head…😬

Why don’t you just check a bag? I wish the airlines would do more to discourage carry-on bags. They just make the airplane uncomfortable for everybody.
@moderick17 күн бұрын
Well done, must have been very hot to wear with all that kit.
@ProjectUntethered16 күн бұрын
It wasn’t so bad since mine is lightweight. But it definitely would be hot with a heavier jacket. I guess you’d technically only have to actually wear it if passing the checkin counter, then you could just hold it in your arms or clip it to your personal item

Your vest costs more than checking a bag!
@ProjectUntethered16 күн бұрын
But if you can save yourself a checked bag or carry on on every trip, it will quickly pay off the vest :)
@bettyparker331714 күн бұрын
And it’s not always just a matter of costs. I’d check more if we didn’t have to wait an hour, and other hassles, at baggage claim. That’s after the bags have been used as a rugby game ball by loading crew. Plus the lost bags problem.
@DeltaAlphaNov22 күн бұрын
Definitely check the airport security rules for the airports you'll be traveling through. Schiphol, for example, makes you take everything out of pockets - pants pockets *and* coat pockets. So this trick might not work there.
@ProjectUntethered22 күн бұрын
But couldn't you just put it in the bin to go through the x-ray machine? I didn't actually wear mine when going through security.
@andrewschliewe639216 күн бұрын
This only applies to budget carriers. and if you are so cheap to fly those carriers you can spend the extra money paying for a carryon.
@bettyparker331714 күн бұрын
