It’s tons of fun, but as soon as you get an error code or short something you’re SOL. I had the same bike and after an accident on the street (not my fault), Alta went under and couldn’t even get me all the broken parts replaced. Then it started randomly dying until you cycled the key, super dangerous on the street and they had a recall for it but apparently my dealer didn’t install it properly. Got a random person off the internet to help me update the software, then ended up selling the thing at a huge loss to wipe my hands clean before something else broke.

Very interesting, do you think there is a future for this? I mean if another investor tried to build them again? Better technology, software.... the only knock on today's dirtbikes is the noise. With E bike , We could all have back yard tracks!

I sold mine a couple years ago soon after they went under, I was too scared to hold on to it till an issue pops up. An 11 grand bike that I can’t ride, no way to fix, would eat me up mentally. Hope this bike lasts a long time and AJ takes good care of it.

@@eldonsmith56 for Alta specifically? Probably not. Electric bikes will be here in probably under 10 years. It'll be slow, like 4 stroke adoption, but it's gonna happen. This is a dual sport that is quicker (not necessarily faster) than his 450. Change is in the air.

@@eldonsmith56 Harley Davidson if I remember right was Altas’ main investor keeping them afloat. But Alta wasn’t making money selling them, they were certainly selling as many as they were making, just didn’t have big production capacity and very high production cost for each bike. But Harley Davidson as a company is having financial issues themselves since it’s been a slowly shrinking company for the last two decades. There street bikes are expensive, and the boomer types they appeal to as a customer base is getting smaller. There are a few other currently produced electric dirt bikes selling, including the KTM Freeride. But they’re all glorified trail bikes, not real motocross ready machines. Rather than wait for another startup to make something, I’m just waiting till the big established brands churn out something good.

@@CMLVI Yep it’s gonna happen soon. The market is fairly wide open for something like the Alta with the reception it got. And governments all over the world are going to at some point regulate gas bikes out of being produced. I personally think that’s a few decades away being that this is a really niche market, it’s gonna happen with passengers vehicles must faster though.

I use to work for Alta. Rode the SM to the office in SF. Under the radar wheelies and stoppies made every commute the high of my day. These bikes are in a class of their own. RIP. Now I work for RIVIAN, which would look damn good with an Alta in the back.

@@AjCatanzaro Bombardier bought ALTA's assets... my hope is that the next generation (whenever that happens) will have more support. I am super sad about where that leaves these though. If anything ever breaks you should work with some of the youtube community and have the parts machined. There are TONS of makers on youtube who are capable of designing parts for these things. Whomever makes the design could maybe profit of selling a license of the part or can work with a manufacturer of the part itself and sell them as aftermarket (but I bet that wouldn't be profitable) however the youtube series would probably pay dividends and the PR it would make to help the E-MX community would be cool

It doesnt just shut off when the battery dies like running out of gas in a gas bike. The max power begins to phase out and lower as the battery % nears 0. You can still ride around itll just have really reduced power. So nothing to worry about. Ive done 20 minute motocross races pushing as fast as i can and still had about 1/3 battery left.

Congrats AJ! If you need spare keys cut, the key blanks used are "ilco 1611R" I got spare keys cut for my '18 Alta MXR and they work fine. I keep one handy for riding, one stored safely at home, and another hidden in my truck in case I forget to bring the usual key when I go riding. And the longer you own your Alta the more you are going to be loving it, Lol.

How's the torque for launching a triple after a tight corner? It would be nice to hear Cam's thoughts as well. Let's hope Honda cooking up a good one too! That EXR should have the XPLORer WP fork, which needs more than springs and a revalve if you plan for any serious track time. Look into DAL SOGGIO SPHERE, Lanier EPICA Cartridge kit, Technical Touch KYB cartridge conversion, or just swap to a spring cone valve. A WP AER swap would be cheapest if you don't intend for it to be a street bike, but any air problems on the street would cause you not to be able to limp home. And dump those skewer of mirrors for some "Double Take" mirrors, and look into a Enduroplate License Plate Holder for a more durable plate holder option.

You lucky guy...what a beauty, congratulations!!! I (here in Europe) waited for this street legal machine. In the US and elsewhere there is maybe still no need for a silent dirtbike but in Germany it would be a game changer. Now no new Altas (with warranty etc.) available I have to to biuld my own E dirtbike. It would be nice if you make a video if this bike as a dual sport made sense (range for commuting), the possibilities of adjusting the motors characteristics (I guess you can connect it to your computer and have a software for adjustments) and a clip where you compare the handling lacking the inertia of the engine to a ice bike. Is it easier to powerslide (in a controlled way) or more difficult? wish you much fun!

So I have to ask, is there a reason you rev the motor in the air? Is it just a habit, or do you need to in order to keep the bike straight?

The rear tire spins down a bit quicker in the air compared to a 4 stroke, so the nose of the bike pitches down in the air a little more than a gas bike. But throttling in the air brings the front end up way faster on the Alta compared to a gas bike. All that torque helps! Takes about a lap to get used to but its sweeeeet.
