I paid off my Tesla!

On 12/28/2022, I made a decision to buy a Tesla Model Y...Little did I know, I was in for a rollercoaster of a ride....I was hit with 7.12% interest with a whopping $660.27 per month payment for 6 years.
Today on 6/6/2024 I paid the whole thing off. I always listened to Dave Ramsey, and having a car payment is one of the worst financial decisions you can make. So I became kind of a hypocrite, and held the loan for about a year and a half.
I said enough is enough, and I HAD IT!
We are getting real serious about financial independence.
NO car payment.
NO house payment.
Let's get it.

Hi, I’m Nico Murillo, and I recently got laid off from Tesla on 4/15/2024. I was a Production Supervisor, and was with the company for 5 years. I started in 2019, as an entry level Production Associate. After getting laid off, had to make the decision to sell the house. I decided to sell most of my belongings and move into my 2021 Tesla Model Y. When I worked at Tesla, I slept in my car on work days to avoid my 3 hour round trip commute time from Lathrop, Ca to Fremont, Ca. I created a platform in my trunk with the use of Michaels, Home Depot products, and a soft mattress, where I now call my home. Living in my car enables me to save money, and invest it. I am documenting my journey to financial independence by 2029. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to look into financial independence. Maybe one day i'll see you at GNC in Stoneridge Mall Pleasanton, Ca. I currently work there now as a supplements store manager. I am off Sundays and Wednesdays though.

Great move dude. Just to reinforce how much of a financial mistake it is to borrow to buy a motor vehicle and not fall into the debt trap again work out how much you paid for the vehicle, how much you paid over time and what it's now worth. Trust me when I say that your tomorrow self will thank you for good financial decisions when you no longer want to, or can't, work, or financial issues hit. I had people telling me to spend more, experience more and whatever else for my whole working life but we followed the plan that we had decided on. Now I get up each day and do what I want with my time. It's priceless imo.

If I had a reason to buy now, I too would pay cash rather than the current 5.75% rate offer over I think 48 months. Also means I can decide on a cheaper insurance option if I please. See this is a lesson for you young guys. At 7% interest he has only paid down the loan by $8k in 1.5 years. All the money is really going to bank. A almost $800 car payment and insurance is close to $1k a month. Heck even making $120k take home is around $6-7k a month. And on top of that he has a mortgage. So guys do your future self a favor, car is just a mean of transportation when you living paycheck to paycheck. Save up and pay cash for a decent $20k car, think about insurance cost too. Those are the hidden cost you don’t see, and those will get you.

Nico, you clearly have a strong determination and are likely to achieve your goals in the long run. However, there may be smarter ways to work toward financial independence without compromising your health through a car-nomadic lifestyle. 1. Sell your Tesla for its market value (around $30k) and use the funds to buy a more economical car and secure a place to live. 2. Opt for an affordable car (around $6k) to avoid car loans and reduce insurance costs. 3. Consider renting a room (approximately $1k/month) to save time and gain conveniences like a regular bathroom and laundry facilities, providing a stable home base. This strategy could allow the $30k from your Tesla sale to cover about two years of rent. During this time, you could focus on developing your skills beyond the daily challenges of living out of a car. By sacrificing the Tesla, you gain some normalcy without being tied down, maintaining a minimalist lifestyle similar to what you managed in your car. Just remain disciplined to avoid lifestyle inflation.

"Financial independence" by going all in the stock market?! By when, on what basis? I think you'll have to settle down your expectations a bit or you are in for a rude awakening. It doesn't seem you have enough cash to live off of the potential gains you'd make. What sort of returns are you expecting? If you are going super high risk, then you are gambling. It's concerning that you are readying GaryV, a certified crypto conner. Watch out bro, all these financial gurus you like are often speaking from a very position. Best of luck.

Super happy for you but I rather have 30k extra in my bank for let's say emergencies than pay off a depreciating asset... there's a reason why Elon has a 200b networth and still take out loans. Keeping more liquid cash in the bank is always the BEST option. Car payments are only bad if you have a 30k loan and you make minimum wage but if you have 200k in your bank with a car payment, that's NOT bad.

The thing that is more sad than anything is that he’s homeless, but more importantly, he made his entire family homeless, and his priority is paying for a car. This is not a person you would want to use as a role model. Role models don’t live on the street. Role models don’t live in their car. That’s very poor judgment.
