What if I want to learn and concentrate in something and research in a field that I find interesting? As much antagonism there is towards people struggling to pay student debt, there's also antagonism against post-secondary education. I give the free pass on those who don't go to college because they don't want to, but god forbid I go to college in something I want to do? Anyways, keep hustling my friends. We got this. P.S. There are factors that one must take in this video: 1) She graduated from Tufts University. TUFTS UNIVERSITY. A private university which costs two or three TIMES more than a typical state university. 2) She studied Drama and Communications at a private university. I appreciate that she wants a degree in the field. But is going to a costly university while having a degree that could be obtained on a regular public university or a community college worth it? Drama and Communications degree does not also guarantee you a stable job after college. Not hating on her degree but on the context of the student debt, the degree isn't worth the debt. She could literally be an IT graduate at a community college and earn 60k a year directly after with little or no debt. 3) She took in the loans during the economic crash in 2008-2009; the interest rate on loans was really high during that time. The interest rates have since generally decreased after the recession. While it's ridiculous to think that the system is totally flawed and must be reformed, also consider her own actions.

I don’t understand you guys. It’s expected as a society, or at least it’s the norm, that parents take care of all of their child‘s financial needs until they’re 18. And yet we expect them to magically know as soon as they turn 18 how to make decisions that are potentially worth 100s of thousands of dollars? That is completely illogical. Unless we mandate financial literacy courses starting from elementary school, we can’t give 18 year olds the full responsibility to make those kinds of decisions. Like the girl said in the video, someone needs to wait until they’re 21 to spend $5 on a Budlight, but yet they’re somehow old enough to get into tens of thousands of dollars of debt when they decide on a college as seniors in high school? Makes absolutely no sense. The US is the only developed country with a student loan crisis like this. Can someone please explain to me why that is? This is a national shame.

she can choose to pay more if she wanted to. what you're referring to is called the amortization schedule. All loans, not just student loans, follow a similar concept. Loaners frontload the interest payments, and as time goes by, more of the bill will goes towards the principal. This is to protect the loaner from not ever getting their money back in full. to lower her interest payment she needs to a) pay more per month or b) re-fi to get a lower interest rate. the same concept applies to a mortgage btw.

Choosing to study Drama and Communications in Tufts University was definitely a mistake on Britney's part. She could have chosen to study at a less prestigious university and still receive a similar quality of education with much less expense. She also chose a loan option with around 9% interest when there's many out there that offer a fixed rate of around 3-6%. A lot of her problems boil down to her not being well educated in financial matters and the blame for that would rest on herself, her parents, and perhaps the school system for not requiring a class that deals with these problems. Now that she's in this situation, she has options to sign up for an income-driven repayment plan, loan forgiveness programs, and deferment or forbearance. Her last resort would be to file bankruptcy and have her student loans discharged if she meets certain conditions (Brunner test), but it shouldn't have to come to that if she chooses her options wisely this time around.

Colleges/Universities put these filler degrees to boost enrollment and make the maximum amount of money from people paying to go to school there. People take these degrees because they're easier then say computer engineering and still gives you that college experience and allow you to say you've gone to college but you might as well not have.

Student loans do attract those young people who were not lucky enough to have good personal finance education or parents who knew how to handle money properly. Mistakes have been made by choice, they just need to treat it as such and work hard to pay it off, and hopefully remember this lesson so they can teach their future children not to repeat their mistakes.

Everyone is trying to say that her major was the problem but it's not. The problem is the interest is so high she's barely paid anything on her loan for the past 8 years. The problem is students are not told exactly what a loan entails. The problem is her family had other kids to take care of but that isn't considered when it comes to financial aid, all they see is the number not the other needs that number goes to. The problem is her entire life is revolving around getting these loans paid off. The problem is that if anything happens to her and she cannot pay the loan she can't just declare bankruptcy like with other loans, they will come after her family. The problem is instead of realizing that this is a fucked up situation for anyone to be in, people attack her choice of major and shut down any conversation there is to be had about student loans.

Choosing to study Drama and Communications in Tufts University is DEFINITELY the problem. Don't even try to argue otherwise. Her last resort would be to file bankruptcy, but it shouldn't have to come to that if she chooses her options wisely this time around.
@ElfriedeRose7 жыл бұрын
David you can't file bankruptcy for student loans. That's part of the problem.
@david1097 жыл бұрын
You definitely can if certain conditions are met. Search up the Brunner test. However, it doesn't have to come to this. Britany and many other students in her situation can still alleviate their student debt through the use of programs and plans as I mentioned above.

David The problem is that loans and the like are riddled with incoherant terms that regulat people dont really understand. A class on finances(credit, mortgages, student loand ect) being mandatory in HS would help, or the government could require a financial advisior(one who works for the state or school and not the banks giving out loans) be required prior to sighning any student loans..that way someone is there to guide you through the loan who has your best intrest in mind. I hope the governmeny steps in to fix this because student loans adversly affect the economy..as money that would usually be spent on recreation or as luxury expenses is spent on loans..the government doesnt give two shits about us ordinary citizens..but it cares about its corporate buddies and most of them could stand to gain a lot of cash by having a vested intrest in tackling the student loan problem.

Still don't need those universities for stem. You could do just fine in the STEM field by going to a 4-year State University. Most STEM majors know you're only paying for the name when he go to the private or Ivy Leagues. Universities have upped their game so private and ivy league universities aren't as special as they used to be. You can get the same level of education from a good 4 year state ran Institution. Speaking from experience, my cousin went to a private four-year Institution and I went to State and we're both receiving about the same level of education he just does twice the work as I do but I still know exactly what you knows. I think what is frustrating is that on the surface, most people--even 18 year olds--understand that taking out a loan means that you have to pay it back, *BUT* most college-aged kids do not understand the magnitude those loans will have on their long-term finances. These kids are graduating from college with awful debt to income ratios which affect their credit scores, preventing them from obtaining the best interest rate on consolidation for these loans, and they wind up in a situation like the girl in this video where they are paying astronomical interest and never really paying the balance down. Add in that the same applies for anything one needs credit for in life, and these kids are starting out their adult lives completely screwed. There really needs to be some sort of mandatory education regarding student loans before they are taken out. The entrance and exit counseling on the government's website is *NOT* sufficient.

Haters need to remember that many parents and teachers encouraged kids to go to college, regardless of their ability to pay (I know mine did). They would say that student loans are absolutely fine and you'll be able to pay them with that good job you'll get when you get out. I was even told, "it doesn't matter what degree you get, just get one." I started with a hybrid degree that was technical and creative (there was some computer science involved). I eventually switched to broadcasting just so I could finish a degree. I knew that it was a worthless degree, but as a senior by credit hours, I had to at least finish a degree. I original didn't even want to go to college because I knew I wanted to do creative work, which could be hard to make money on. I got the sense that I'd be flipping burgers otherwise, so I followed the advice of my parents and teachers. I worked hard, I made portfolios, I worked internships and campus jobs in media. I really thought I would find something after graduation, until the economy crashed in 2008. I did AmeriCorps right after school, to offset some of the cost of the loans. 10 years down the road and I'm just now financially stable enough to start using all of my pay (multiple part-time jobs) to pay my loans. Why can I use all my income on loans now? My husband, who hasn't finished a degree, is now making more money than I make, as a carpenter's apprentice. Yup. I actually chose a cheaper state college on purpose. I had planned to stay on a tight budget when I got out so I could pay my loans quickly. That full-time job never came. The part-time jobs I collected never gave me a steady income. I was on a constant search for something more stable and it wasn't there. I'm not gonna say my generation made all the best choices with these loans, but please have a little understanding about how we got here. We thought we were listening to good advice from the authority figures in our lives. We were also told we could be whatever we wanted (LOL!) We're doing the best with what we have. You can criticize all you want, but know that we will be stronger for this struggle, and a little smarter. I tell every 18-year-old I know to avoid college unless they 1. have the money already 2. can work to afford it while they go 3. are actually studying something they NEED the degree for (doctor, lawyer, teacher, engineer, etc.)

@mystman77226 жыл бұрын
This!! SO MUCH OF THIS!!! Our previous generation was born and raised from childhood to young adulthood being brainwashed/told that you HAD to go to college to have a happy carefree life. If you didn't, you would struggle to get by and life would be problematic if you didn't have a title or college degree, you wouldn't get a high salary job, etc etc. We had ZERO reasons to think othwerwise or were told ZERO alternatives. We had no reason to believe otherwise. (internet didn't exist for us yet, so information was scarce). Parents, family even schools told us this. It's so easy for people of today to use hindsight to justify their arrogant judgmental comments like they knew better. The thing is, people didn't know better. Proper information, the truth about college, none of this information was being told at all anywhere. It's only because this is a hot topic now in the media and the internet is much more accessible are we all now more aware that college is just a choice, not the sole mandatory path to financial security.

I never had a job making over $46,000 a year. The math just doesn’t work. You’ve got to be getting an education with a degree toward a job that pays very well. I was a lousy student except in art... which as everyone knows, doesn’t pay well. My parents dropped me at college and drove 7 hours away. Then I get called down to the office to sign loan papers. I was so confused I thought mom & Dad were paying. I called my mom and she said sign it. It’ll be easy to pay back with the fancy job you’ll get. Think again.

But I refinanced and lowered my interest rate: www.sofi.com/share/202637 So many people are paying OUTRAGEOUS interest rates on their loans, when simple student loan refinancing could lower it a lot (check the link I sent and see if you can get approved for better payment plans). I pay over $900 in payments (at one point above $2,000 a month but that was unsustainable, even as a lawyer). But I'm on a great plan now and can't complain. Was all worth it.

Some folks do go to community colleges and get transfer credits from their high schools. Most private schools put a limit on the number of transfer credits that can be applied to your degree. State schools aren't always an option for people, especially those in states where admission to state schools are competitive. So you can have a bunch of transfer credit, be a good student, but still not get a spot in your state's university. That leaves students with the option of going to a school within their budget but lacks the quality education they worked hard to receive, or go to a school outside of their budget that provides the student with a great education and more future earning potential

Why are so many people hating on her? She was 18, I think she is doing the right things by selling the stuff didn’t “need” and took advantage of her fender bender money towards the loan. If I was her, I would have chosen a cheaper college for that degree. I am also paying $900 dollars a month for student loans, selling whatever I can live without and put any extra money towards my principle. It was my choice to make, and I knew what kind of risk I was getting myself into. It was my decision so I am going to get out of it myself. I am not going to rely on government intervention to save me from these loans. It won’t happen.

Anthony Forest I fully respect her drive but the system is seriously corrupt.
@DFW20176 жыл бұрын
Johnathan Woods I totally agree that the system is corrupted. College education, I start to ask what is the point? We spend tens of thousands of dollars to college with the false idea of being prepared for the career we are studying, but instead the college is more concerned in keeping you “entertained” and keeping courses rather easy as long you do the homework and write a 1-2 page paper a week... students are now seen as “customers” not students.

Responsibility needs to be fulfilled by everyone involved in the action. You're responsible to pay your student loans, but the companies that loan you the money are responsible for their high interest rates.

The fact that she has this stuff means that she bought it before she thought about having to pay student loans i mean how many dresses do you need? Also Students are customers. FACT they are also choosing to be students nobody forces you to study.

shut up. she still found work, her debt is so high because of the interest not because of how much she borrowed. If she only owed what was paid, she could pay it off in a couple years
@Evycakez6 жыл бұрын
evileyez504 that’s how interest works. It’s her fault for not doing the research beforehand. No one would ever lend people money for free. That’s how loans work! How is this even being argued?

I come from a middle class family and I was almost put into this situation when I got accepted to NYU. I got accepted as a transfer, so I figured 2 years at NYU would not kill my chances at being financially stable. They only offered me 5 grand out of 72 grand tuition per year. Also, because it is a private school, they would not accepted the college credits I took in high school and only a portion of the credits I earned at my state school, and that would've put me a year back, having to take multiple classes in the summer and winter to grad. in four years when I would've grad in 3 at my state school. If it wasn't for my parents telling me we couldn't afford it over and over again, I wouldn't have done math for three hours straight and understand interest loans and have come to the realization that I would've been paying more in student loans than I could possibly afford in rent for the next forty years if I wanted to go to NYU. It wasn't worth it, I'm glad I did the math.

I ran into that same issue. Doing 2 years in CC, then being accepted into Syracuse university. Only to find out that 2 years would have given me a mortgage without the house. So I did not go, thank god.

I really don’t understand why we are forced to pay for further education. Shouldn’t our tax money be used to aid this county’s own people? Should it not be the country’s job to ensure everyone goes to college and becomes a beneficial contributor to our society? It really doesn’t make sense how we are forced to pay fees in an attempt to strengthen and educate our future generations when the best way to ensure success is to pave the way by allowing anyone and everyone to get an equal chance of becoming something in life.

Go to an affordable college for undergrad, preferably one that's local or in commuting distance and if your family qualifies you can get financial aid. Save the big bills for grad school if you choose. I graduated debt free because of this, had a couple major jobs already. The price of partying in college probably isn't worth the lifelong student loan debt.

Here’s some advice if you feel trapped with paying for student debt, get a loan from the bank to pay it off; the interest from bank loans is much less and overall just easier to handle. 💸
