Inspirational - nice to see a 'snapshot' of the comet using just a DSLR on a tripod. The comet will be nicely positioned near Mars around 11 Feb when viewed from here in Sydney, so I'll have a go at taking some snaps using my D3300. Taking some shorter exposures and sets of calibration frames to try processing using SiriL might also be fun. Can you answer a question? I live near Solihull. In the evenings, anywhere between 7pm and around midnight, I see a VERY bright ''star''. Its twinkles a lot, is yellow/orange in colour, is low on the southern horizon, moving east to west, slowly. It was really bright tonight, looked closer. I have seen this for WEEKS now! Not an aircraft. Saw it tonight around 8pm. ALWAYS in the same place, same height. Only the size seems to change, from fairly small to an unmissable twinkly thing! What IS it please?!
@starman1969 Жыл бұрын
I'd say most likely Jupiter. It is the most obvious thing in the south at that time, although Venus can also be seen lower to the southwest after sunset.

Maybe a silly question, but... using 8" exposure with your 300mm lens, don't you get trails of the comet too? In the picture you showed, I noticed a bit of trails for the stars, but it wasn't much appreciable on the comet, so I was wondering if I could use longer exposures than the one estimated with "500 rule". I took some shots few days ago, with 85mm f/1.4, using 5 seconds exposure, and it looked sharp. Curious to see what would happen with longer exposures. thank you for sharing your experience!
@starman1969 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. The 30 second exposure at this short focal length is not enough to pick up any movement of the comet against the background stars, though it may appear to not have as much movement due to it's diffuse look. The next video is one where I used a tracking device for a longer exposure, so that might show a bit more movement.
