The holes on the bell also allow you to play a (very awkward and out of tune) low B-flat when sitting. You’re supposed to use your knees to cover them. I saw it on another beginner oboe testing video.

Oh really!? I should try it out! I guess there just weren’t enough hoops for beginner oboists to jump through already lol

Buescher Aristocrat is an early version of the Selmer Bundy and was made right before the Selmer Bundy which is now Selmer USA Buescher instruments were only made for around 3 years. Also the Fox 333 is a Fox 330 the older Fox 333 doesn’t have a left f and the older 330 still has the full conservatory except no low bb vent or 3rd octave key.

About the hole on the bell- It's actually the low Bb. You cover the hole by clamping your legs and you get a low B-flat of a very questionable quality that is also being muffled by your legs.
@chrisperyagh
@chrisperyagh 10 ай бұрын
The holes in the bell are for the low B natural to issue from as Bb only issues directly from the bell mouth itself when the bell vent holes are closed.

@@chrisperyagh As it does on many beginner and intermediate oboes without the res key. I played one of those. I know for a fact you play a Bb by closing your legs.

@@rodneymills6477 I'm aware of that method to get low Bb on basic beginner models without a bell key, although the point I am making here and correcting you on where you said "About the hole on the bell- It's actually the low Bb." is that low B natural is the note that issues directly from the tonehole on the bell on all modern oboes, whether they have a bell key or plain vent holes like beginner model Bundys. Low Bb only issues directly from the bell mouth itself and not from any toneholes (the small vent hole on most modern oboes only serves to raise the pitch and alter the tone quality of the low Bb), unless you happen to have an oboe built to low A. It's basic woodwind physics - notes can't issue from closed toneholes - they can only issue from the highest open tonehole along the length of an instrument or issue directly from the open end of a completely closed tube.

Same, my Band Director said he thought I was good enough to be trusted with the “Nice Oboe” which was a Fox Renard

Another good student Oboe that's been popping up in Australia is the Armstrong Pan Student Oboe. It goes for $3165 (about 2000 USD) new, and I believe it's effectively Armstrong's professional model Oboe except with a resin body. Never heard bad things about one of those

One other one I'd like to know about: have you ever gotten to try out a B&H Regent? I've heard a lot of people say they're pretty solid beginner instruments, but I've also heard a few say the exact opposite

Bundy and Buescher oboes are one and the same thing - both made by Selmer USA and only the name is different and both names were being used at the same time (as well as being stencilled as B&H "78" on some models made for the UK market). Likewise with Buffet and Schreiber beginner and student level oboes as both were made by Schreiber.

I am shocked that the last instrument costs so much more and yet, the sound quality is not really convincing. It sounds nice, played softly, it seems only. The Yamaha is for me the clear winner as sounding consistent overall. I wonder if it's impossible to sound great on these cheap instruments. Perhaps with another reed and much strength??

I play Bb clarinet 1 for marching band but I also play it in concert band and am thinking about switching and learning oboe for concert band. I have only two concerns, Embouchure and switching from single reed clarinets to double reed instruments and then Oboe fingerings. Are they similar? Would it be drastically different or difficult to learn in my spare time to switch to?

I just picked up an English thumb plate oboe……I live in England. Flute is my main instrument and most thumbplate fingerings in the lower two registers are the same, similar or the keys are ‘backwards’ to flute keys so easily remembered….R pinky flute=Eb,C#,C oboe=C,C#,Eb. Flute doesn’t have octave keys, but I don’t remember clarinet having them either. If you want to learn a second instrument then just do it. You’ll soon get the muscle memory for fingerings. If you want the same fingerings then try a different member of the clarinet family. Bass clarinet is still in Bb, or there’s the alto in Eb……….or the little brothers and sisters in C & Eb. An A clarinet will just rid you of three sharps when get landed with more than you want.

I swear the goal of beginner oboes is to make people suffer and get people to buy their more expensive oboes. Oboe sellers: wE lEAve out THE keYs to MaKE it LIghteR… Thank god my arms are saved but now I have carpel tunnel syndrome from playing fork F with Eb key

Also, Oboe sellers: oh you want to use a NECK strap? Well too bad because this thumb rest doesn’t have one. It’s gonna cost you an extra $200 for us to drill a hole for you
