Honestly, the more I look at the art direction the more it gains on me. It has a very surreal kind of appeal, with insane impossible spaces painted in pastel colors, and every creature looking like it was made from plasticine. I wouldn't necessarily wanna *play it* but I have to admit no other game series looks quite like Garten of Banban.

Unpopular opinion: Opila Bird from the first game was legitimately terrifying, and a masterful example of how to make a horror game monster behave. No audio ques telling the player that they should be scared. No jumpscare scream. No sudden movements. She behaves exactly like a predator would, making constant mesmerizing eye-contact, while approaching just slowly enough to not make her prey panic and act unpredictably. She's unnervingly intimidating.

@@Cyfrik its really weird too, becuase ban ban himself is like made of mostly tounded shapes but they used like a half billion tris for literally everything, instead of using simple shapes. hell the legs and upper arms are cylinders, forearm is a long ellipse type shape, torso and head are a rectangle then you slap a couple cones on top and extrude em a bit to get the shape. this is how i would do it as a novice anyways, no need for the shit they did lol.

The thing that shocks me the most is, when I first heard about these games' high poly-count, I assumed it was just the developers making the monsters in sculpt mode and had the polygons set way too high in that, but now that I know even that controller (which looks like just some primitive shapes, no sculpting) also has such high numbers, I'm gonna assume they just... set their modeling program to the highest poly-count it would allow every time they added a new mesh.

@@MothFable Actually, now that I think about it, I may have a theory as to how it might have happened. Doesn't Blender (and presumably other 3D modeling software) have an option to set an edge to either "sharp" or "smooth" for shading purposes? Maybe they didn't know that, and instead pumped up the polygons until rounded objects looked like they were shaded smoothly?

Garten of BanBan is like a blackhole of content creation culture. Made as a moneygrubbing, badly optimized horror mascot bandwagon designed solely to lower refunds and exploit the theory video culture. Kids absolutely believe this game is good and irony-poisoned people cannot help but use video essay language to say it's secretly genius. Obviously, I like watching other people play and suffer from it. I alao like the idea these devs were highly unprepared to make any kind of game, were absolute assholes at one point and maybe turned it arlund by embracing how bad the game is through more ironic writing. But it's bad and you should only buy it knowing all its context. It is STILL a game made to waste your time so you skip the refund window.

Okay, here's a really wild thought. It feels strange to me how now instead of making one whole game, and possibly just releasing more chapters as development goes, you make them all separate games that you pay separately for. Thing is, while ultimately in terms of numbers that might be the same thing, by splitting it up into a bunch of smaller price points it seems to me like you could deceive people into paying way more for what should be a single title. As is the case here, because if the GoB devs keep churning out "sequels" the price is gonna balloon beyond even Nintendo games. For THIS. And I believe that's the whole point. And it might be worth for the FTC to look into that.

Woah there, let's not summon the devil because a gamedev did an "unorthodox" thing. This was kinda how games ordinally were where instead of infinite scope creep forever early access games indies made small, bite-sized titles and if they got a new idea they just threw it into a sequel. There was even a short revival of this about a decade ago back when Telltale was going strong where would could wait to buy the whole game or buy it in $5 installments as the game went along. You see it more nowadays with people putting out small projects on Itch (dot) io for dirt cheap and if you like it you buy their next tiny lil game. If you're getting most of your stuff from big platforms like Steam of PSN this might seem unusual but it makes a bit more sense if you consider itch games as the gaming equivalent of a basement show. TL;DR the Euphoric Brothers are so untrained in gamedev they accidentally reverse engineered the way indie games used to be sold.
