This was a great one to watch, thanks for doing it. I got an Epi 1961 Les Paul SG Standard and I’m SOOOOO happy with it.

I just got a new Gibson SG Standard in a trade and it’s really become my number one. It’s light, plays great, doesn’t have neck dive and sounds frickin amazing. SG’s are such cool guitars. So different than Les Pauls. That’s why you need both.
@kevinmurtagh4996 Жыл бұрын
I recently acquired an SG Standard as well, from 2007. Just normal Standard, not the ‘61 reissue. I also love it it so much. If you can find an SG that has little to no neck dive, they are so great! I love that they are lighter than most Les Pauls, and are also easier to play sitting down than most Les Pauls. The only minor gripe I have with SG’s is that because they are so thin, if you put any pressure on the body with your strumming arm, the whole guitar will bend sharp. I find that I have to adjust the way I hold the guitar and where/how I rest my right arm when playing to avoid this issue. But once I adjusted to it, it’s not a big deal. I love it so much!

Muse, I have an old Ep. G 400, loaded it with PAF pickups, US electronics, Aluminum stop bar. Slightly big neck, it has some bass! Best sounding SG I have played. You never know which one will sound best, have owned several types. Same thing for my LP, it’s an early 90’s Studio. Tried almost all types, bought, sold, traded, nothing else comes close. Definitely not the case with my Fender, older USA Strats for me.

Nice playing again Rich. SG's are so easy to play. I haven't owned one for a while and they used to be one of my go to guitars. I bought my first one, a 60's Special in 1970 and further variants from 71 onwards. The Epiphone models have come a long way and I prefer the new headstock shape.

I’ve been in that store and I love it!! Every time I go I play a Gibson SG! The past few times I have played the ebony SG standard at the beginning, the red SG standard, and just this past time, I played the 61 maestro vibrola, it was my favorite! I love the Gibson SGs! Some people say that Epiphones are just as good as or even some times better than Gibsons but in my they are lying. Gibsons are truly a different experience and if you ever get the chance to play one if you haven’t, it will be an experience you will never forget!! If you have played a Gibson, then you know what I m talking about! Long live the Gibson SG!!!

The thing that's strikes me most is how far Epiphone has come in the last 2 and a half years, since the new kalamazoo headstock ranges were introduced, quality is sky high and matches Gibson in terms of sound, and is close in terms of look and feel and for 60 plus % less, they are absolutely phenomenal IMHO.

They have always been good. The pickups they use now are the same as they have used since 2012. Biggest difference now aside from cosmetic and names is CTS pots. The build quality on my 2007 SG is just as good or better than my 2020 SG P90.

Rich, good job on the video nice playing. I liked the sounds of all the SG's they all have their sound and there are differences but they are subtle. I have both and Epiphone 61 and it is amzing for the price it really plays great. I also have a Gibson Sg Special with P90's and that guitar is great also. I think the Gibsons do have better quality parts like mine with it being handwired and orange drop capacitors and just better parts in general but do those things justify the one thousand dollar difference well that is up to the individual but I think the Epiphones are a tremendous value and the Gibson SG special is a steal at the price as well. Thanks again for your work on this.

Here's the specs of a 2019 epiphone exclusive deluxe limited run Sg Pro..i found one on the used market in 2022 and paid $650.00 for it and very worth it..... Classic 60s Era "Solid Guitar" The G-400 Deluxe PRO is inspired by the first generation of SGs made in the 1960s at the legendary Gibson and Epiphone factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan that produced the Les Paul and the Casino. The SG model was originally intended to replace the Les Paul, which temporarily went out of production from 1961-1968. The new G-400 Deluxe PRO is constructed using the same dimensions and build techniques as vintage SGs and features a AAA Flame Maple Veneer top with a Mahogany body and neck with a comfortable 1960's SlimTaper 'D' profile and a 24.75" scale length. The Pau Ferro fingerboard has single ply binding with pearloid Trapezoid inlays, 22 medium jumbo frets, a 12" radius, and an adjustable truss rod with a 'bell' cover. Alnico Classic PRO Humbuckers with Coil Splitting The G-400 Deluxe PRO is powered by Alnico Classic PRO humbuckers made with Alnico-V magnets, which produce a slightly higher output especially in the mid and highs. Each pickup has it own Volume and Tone control with full-size potentiometers along with Epiphone's rugged, all-metal, 3-way toggle pickup selector switch for long-lasting performance. Both pickups are also wired for coil-tapping. By pulling up the pickup's volume knob, the humbucker will switch become a "single-coil" pickup, allowing players an infinite variety of tones from single-coil bark to full humbucker bite. When winding humbuckers, Epiphone utilizes a double vacuum waxing process that ensures quiet operation free from microphonic hum. The pickup is first placed in the specialized wax vacuuming system before the cover is placed on the unit to ensure that the wax fully penetrates to the very center of the pickup and solidifies all parts. After the cover is placed on, it is again given a second vacuum wax bath until the unit is completely saturated with wax. Epiphone also uses high quality ABS plastic bobbins, 1010 Cold Rolled Steel pole shoes and pole screws, the finest magnet wire available. Solid Epiphone Hardware The G-400 Deluxe PRO features gold hardware on the Honeyburst, Trans Blue, and Trans Red color finishes and all G-400 Deluxe PROs come with a LockTone bridge and Stopbar tailpiece for incredible sustain as well as Wilkinson Vintage Classic Machine Heads with a 18:1 turning ratio.

I have a Gibson 61 standard with a abr and a stop bar great sg. I do like the regular standard too. But because the pickups are mounted in the pickgaurd they are flat and parallel to the body and you can only adjust pickup height till the lead edge of the bridge pick up is close to strings how ever I like the neck joint on the standard . The 61 standard pickups are mounted in pickup rings with are slanted to match the neck angle so there is more room for pickup adjust ment. My 61 came stock with 10 to 46 strings for what ever reason it felt like too much tension. I know it's the same scale length as my l es Paul's but even after raising the stop bar it still felt too stiff. . I sent it out for a good set up and switched to 9 to 42s and that totally felt right when I got it back . I did this because Angus Young has his SGs set up with 9s and I'll be damned but this is great with 9s on it . Now on to epiphone ...seems like they have raised the bar a bit with some of thier stuff. Few years back they made a Tony Iommi signature model I had a chance to play one and man ill tell ya that epiphone rivaled any Gibson sg I have played . Wish they still made that model I missed the boat on that one. I need a telecaster first but I want to get a second sg . They are weird at first to play and lookin down at the thin body is kinda weird when your used to the heft of a les paul but once you get past the initial weirdness sg s are killer rock guitars with thier own voice. Love the channel Rich and the tour you did of Hennings place was cool man. Hell of a compound he has there looked like a good time .

#1 choice was the Gibson SG Standard you played first those pickups were a cut above the rest for me. #2 choice the Epiphone SG Special. Surprised how good the pickups sounded. I bought one of those around 8 years ago and the pickups were trashy as well as the tuners, but the body and neck were mahogany back then. Replaced pickups with Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz set and Grover tuners. Sounds fine now.

Did you mention what amp/pedals you were plugged into? Really liked the sound of that first one. Maybe the gold Epiphone, too? Maybe had something to do with what you were playing? I have intermittent interest in SGs. Every once in a while i get a hankering, as it's something i haven't owned yet, and then i remember they tend to have slim necks and i kinda don't want to spend nearly two grand for a 60s grip....
