I Played EVERY Game of the Year in 2024 (are they still worth it?)

Wait, you forgot to mention Balatro when you were talking about this year's GOTY contenders. It really stands out to me because it is one of the only games nominated for Game of the Year that doesn't have any narrative elements at all, and is there solely on the strength of its deceptively simple yet adictive game loop. It is cool to see a game devoid of all the bells and whistles that we kinda expect of modern video games competing for the top spot against juggernauts with budgets millions of times its size. That said, Metaphor Refantazio is my actual game of the year pick. As a big JRPG fan, it is very exciting to see two nominated this year, and Metaphor in particular delivers just about everything I want from a game like this. All the while expanding on ideas and mechanics of past ATLUS games in ways that are simultaneously familiar yet refreshingly new. Though, it is worth mentioning I was still playing rounds of Balatro between long play sessions of Metaphor.

Fun fact, that card game in the Witcher 3 is called Gwent and there's a standalone online tcg game of it. Very fun game

What do you guys think of DLCs being allowed to "compete" in this year's Game Awards?

i dont get why people are mad about it, i mean yeah its a DLC but it has so much new content that its basically a new game (im not biased at all) (i definitely am)

@@brendanc887 yeah maybe it has enough content that it could stand on its own as a game. But it isn’t. It’s not a game. You have to buy and play an entire game and play more than half of it to access this dlc. It’s not a game. DLCs can be nominated for best ongoing game. It makes no sense that shadow of the erdtree can be nominated for goty.

Shadow of the Erdtree for the win! Please note that despite the narrative that "gamers" are against the DLC's nomination in the 2024 TGA, it is now in the final 5 of the Voter's Choice category. This shows that both the critics who nominate for GOTY and the public who vote for Voter's Choice agree that the DLC is GOTY quality.

@@HollowKnight21 people just vote for whatever they’ve played. The reason games like geshin are there is because they’re free which means lots of people have played it. Not many people have played all of the nominated games. They just vote for the one they played. Since so many people bought welding ring, it’s natural that those people also bought and played the dlc, not due to how good it is but because they’re free which had already completed the base game. Since eldin ring came out 2 years ago, more people would have purchased it.

@@HollowKnight21 players choice is different, you see Genshin Impact got to the top 5 as well and that game released in 2020, it's an award where the people choose their favorite piece of gaming media. However the GOTY is for GAMES that released this year, not for a expansion of an already existing game, you don't see that many people complain that SOET got nominated for the other categories, it's only the GOTY, because it's not a game

The Veilguard is pretty good imo, the user reviews across Steam, PlayStation and Xbox are positive, but it's not as good as Origins or Inquisition and the characters aren't as good as 2

That's good to hear, I figured the backlash for Veilguard was more just degens on Twitter being mad for whatever reason. I talked to a friend recently about her experiences with Inquisition and she also loves it, but feels the Veilguard is getting too much hate for what it is. It's a bit more "accessible" (for lack of a better word) than previous titles, but still very good. Her words. Thanks for the input! :D

@@SpongeDidTheMath the game isn't perfect but 99% of the hate is coming from people who never played a Dragon Age game, and I knew this game was going to get tons of hate even if literally everyone who played it thought it was a masterpiece because before release it was already getting tons of hate for everything from the option to have top surgery scars to there being possible gay relationships even though Bioware included gay romance options long before it was socially common for media to acknowledge same sex relationships without prejudice

@@SpongeDidTheMath people will point to the meta critic user score as "proof" the game is hated, but you don't need to have even seen gameplay to submit a user review on metacritic so controversial games will never have accurate user scores on metacritic, the user reviews on Steam, PlayStation and Xbox are much better at showing opinions for paid games

Honestly, that's a very valid opinion. While I did love Skyrim my FIRST time playing, I couldn't play it again. I tried twice and just found the experience too linear. I've met people who have 1000+ hours in it and I'm blown away at how LOL

Skyrim i love to this day, but a game that is like that for me is RDR2. Can’t get into it at all. I mean, I appreciate the world building, character, etc. but there just isn’t a gameplay loop to get hooked on.
