Seems a sticking point for people in this review is that I said I'm not a fan of the turn based battles and I don't think I did a good job explaining why I think it's not great in THIS game in particular. theyve simplified battling much more by removing abilities, held items, and a lot of stat changing moves. this coupled with the fact having multiple turns is based on speed makes it so there is not much strategy and its more about just having really high speed and then smacking opponents with big moves. some of my favorite games are persona 4 golden and persona 5 royal which are 100 hour jrpgs with turn based battle after turn based battle so believe me, i am not a JRPG hater. i just wish game freak would have done something more with the battles in this game because they stick out as old fashioned among all the new updates. thats why i said "in a weird twist" the battles are the worst part, because usually battling in pokemon is something fans love. i in no way want them to forever remove turn based battling

A full fledged Pokemon RPG should have been a console, no, a console generation defining video game. There is zero reason for this game to not be on par with the greatest video games ever made. Most of the problems i have exist in every other mainstream RPG. I don't like the waypoint markers. We have a fucking map. Please...... I hate the quests. No quests. Quests are purely artificial gameplay. Why are people so obsessed with them? Natural game-play incentives and proper gating are far better. If you are going to make an open world, make an open fucking game. Cut it with the putting linear games into open worlds thing. Subnautica showed how vastly superior a well designed game is to fucking quests. That was like 5 years ago. Why are we still on this shit? And let me access and rename pokemon from my field remotely. Idk why thats not a feature either. I like to rename and keep the first pokemon of every species I get. The graphics are shit. But its a switch game. So frankly, the graphics can be ignored while I fumble with the worlds shitty input method the thumbstick. Im too distracted about how terrible controllers are to use and how desperately improved the game would be with KBM. but its a switch game. So those are "excusable". Thats really it. I like the exploration focus over trainer fights (which I always avoided and loathed when I had to do them). I like new pokedex progression with the checklists. I like having only 240 pokemon. I like how they are all on the same copy of the game. Beating the game is actually feasible. The only improvements that need made are de-mainstreaming it. remove waypoint markers. remove quests. Add actual gameplay incentives and proper gating to progress the story instead. No more artificer gameplay.

@@Wylie288 I agree with you completely on the second part. However, your first paragraph basically lists stuff that isn't really bad or negative on it's own. Side quests and markers aren't automatically bad, they're a mechanic. It's up to the devs to make them good. Take Skyrim, for example. The best storylines of Skyrim are in side quests apart from the main story. And way point markers? I don't see they issue with them. A game can have them or not, I don't think it makes much of a relevant difference. Basically, if you hate side quests and way point markers just because they're quests and waypoint markers, then why even bother playing open world RPGs in the first place?
@erodnelps49653 жыл бұрын
@@Wylie288 bringing Subnautica in is really weird, it has a story to give the player directions, but they can choose to not follow it and do whatever they want (after you found the cure in Subnautica case I guess) because at its core it's a open world survival game, the endpoint can be set by you and not the game. Also there's no quests in Subnautica because 1.there's no one to give you quests in the first place and 2. It simply can't fit, the story is spread around the world and you explore for it, while still gated behind events, it's not "beating boss A to proceed to area B", a more extreme example would be Outer Wilds. PLA is an RPG game, so Metro or Skyrim would be more of a closer comparison, and all those things you hate are RPG mechanics not just shits they want to add for the sakes of adding, that's why they exist in every mainstream RPG. When the story is more on the important side, and there're more place you can go than just 1 straight path ahead, side quests are there to either give more lore of the world or just a waste of time (in that case it's bad quests design, but side quests in PLA doing a decent job at showing how pokemons slowly being accepted into human society and some more lore), and that's when navigation aka quest marker when you got a bunch of side quests at different locations that you have to keep track yourself otherwise. You're not the first to complain about these things tho, some people always want more immersion in open world RPG by removing these seemingly useless elements, but I can assure when it's not there, the game would feel more dulled, lifeless and confusing even.
@McCaroni_Sup3 жыл бұрын
@@Wylie288 first of all, the Switch is capable of much better graphics. If you want a fair comparison of stylized games that look good on Switch, look at Shin Megami Tensei V, a Switch exclusive that also happens to have open design and monster catching mechanics, made by a relatively niche developer (at least in comparison to Pokémon) Second of all, KBM is NOT superior to controller. It's more a sidegrade than an upgrade. It is superior for FPS, MOBA, and MMO games, but action RPGs, JRPGs, platformers, and other such genres are best played with a controller. It really depends on the games you play; and as someone who does not like the games suited to KBM inputs, I often find myself using a controller on PC. Maybe you just don't like the Joycons, in which case I suggest you try the 8bitdo Pro 2. It's compatible with PC too, so you can test it out with your Steam library.

To be fair, the only aspect I really felt really bad is the graphics, it shows that the project needed like 6 more months to be completed, but for some reason (I think it could be because the next console is coming in), they rushed it by cutting off all the optimization and polishing, I mean, if you are checking the memory (specially on emulator, but it happens on the switch too), in places like the village it is more consuming (you can also see that in the farm-like place where it is keeping your pokemon, it shows so few of them that it feels weird). the Trees are assets you could download on 2008, also the world in many places feels really empty (unlike in Zelda). All those aspects are just aspects that really lowered the game experience, but still it feels really fresh and I assume they were planning to use the fluid combat system like in kingdom hearts as this video proposed, but it needed more programming (proves? well, the pokemon can hurt you, they are already attacking, what makes more sense could be to call your pokemon, and keep fighting in that style (like in smash with "pokemon trainer")). Let's have faith that they will keep on that path. Kirby feels like a mario odyssey, why not a pokemon breath of the wild?

As someone who's been a Pokemon fan for about as long as you have, I agree with everything in this video. The game is very rough around the edges, particularly in the graphics department, but the gameplay is so good and so refreshing as a long-time fan that it makes me feel like a kid experiencing Pokemon for the first time again. I'm extremely excited to see where they go in the next games, because this is absolutely the directional shift that the series needed.

I was extremely disappointed with the lack of pokemon breeding and online battles. Two major core aspects of the game completely gone. When I discovered this I lost interest in the game really fast. This could have been a truly great game but I feel like the devs didn't feel bothered to take it that extra step with it. They could have incorporated those things in a unique way that would have been relevant to that time era and it would have been amazing! Heck, it could have even been end game features once the pokedex is filled and the people know more about pokemon but to completely remove those things I think were a big mistake and is ultimately what is going to make people play this game through and quickly forget about it. Pokemon breeding and online battles gave longevity to the game.

I've played it for a little over 2 hours and I kind of wish there was a "master mode" to skip the intro cutscenes. I avoided the guy for a bit and then was still forced to learn about interactions I already had and figured out. Like the game isn't hard in the way of gaming concepts to recognize and learn. I do feel like the background graphics aren't that great; I had a whole battle where the grass was jumping/glitch moving and it drove me nuts. It's a cool concept but it definitely isn't breath of the wild for pokemon. It is fun, but I'm also hoping those Dex tasks get a little more creative than "catch X number of this" and "see this move Y times." It's also an interesting concept but again, after 2 hours I wanted a break, compared to other games where I'd be able to binge play before realizing how much time had passed.
@skullfullofbooks73983 жыл бұрын
It's odd to me that the game chose to have me do 3 cutscenes for each "type" of pokemon but then didn't explain a back shot to me, or why I get more (?) money for it. It also completely skipped berries, or I haven't hit the tutorial for berries, so I'm confused as to how it works and the success rate. Just a weird misbalance of "you can do what you want but we want to hold your hand, but we won't explain it to you in one tutorial phase." 🤔
@PurpleThunderNE3 жыл бұрын
thats a really good point. im on my 2nd playthrough now and theres so much fucking dialogue to read for the tutorial but still somehow they dont tell you everything. once i missed a 100 percent accurate move with no stat changes in play or anything and i had no idea why that happened, but i think it mightve been because the area was foggy and i might be stupid but i just do not remember them saying thats a possibility in any tutorial

Decent review, all in all I think I'll hold off on Arceus, as someone that was hugely into pokemon as a kid but largely fell off around OG pearl, but there's definitely some directions with this that look good, I hope they continue to refine that going forward. Like you said a more action based combat could've meshed better, especially with how the player character already has a dodge and things like that it's like they were so close. The graphics are another big point... like I liked Ruby's visuals more than this game's honestly. Which is apples to oranges obviously, but still, 3D games can do a lot better than this, switch or otherwise.

I would love a open world pokèmon game where you still have the gyms and the elite four. You explore the world just like in Arceus, but there is no sones that are blocked out like in sword and shield and every other pokèmon game. You can go to every gym and every city whenever you want, but you cant fight the fifth gym before the four gyms before. There are more than one way to each city, and sometime you should maybe have to cross some cities with higher gyms than you can take when you first come to that city. You can go to the city with gym 7 and not have found the other gyms before. You would need to explore and find the cities and areas, and as you do that, the map will open up and you will be able to see more. You can go to dangerous areas where you will be oneshotted by pokèmons way above your level. This is just a rough consept, but if you ask me. It would be really fucking cool.

We want an open world experience; town to town, trainers to fight, we want to live as a character through the tv shows / movies type journeys. It's really not the best they could of done, especially for 60 dollars. That is the cost of a AAA game. This could be released on steam for 10 dollars and I would not be surprised. I've only played 1 hour of it so far, and I'm really seeing "flaws". They took a lot of inspiration from botw and so I was expecting a game that was at least half as good as botw was.. and it wasn't. The controls, npcs and graphics are jerky. No voice over, very tiring dialogue, npcs are boring.. I mean they could have at least had voice overs for the cut scenes. But then again, nothing can compete with botw, so expecting a game that took inspiration from it would be a bit too much. I do appreciate how different the game is from all the Pokemon games so far, but I was expecting something more to it.. so it's up to you as a player, I only say this because BOTW was my first switch game and well, it's a masterpiece. So play it for yourselves and then you can decide.
@Wylie2883 жыл бұрын
I mean. Botw has many flaws. Fucking quests for example. Its a good game. but its still has far too much artifical gameplay thats required to play the game properly. The great plateau was promising. And my dissapointment to find a fucking linear quest line was immeasurable. Idk why no one can learn from subnautica on how to make a proper open world game. Having an open world doesn't make your linear game an open world game. It makes it sub optimal because linear games work better in linear worlds.
