Bro that’s the same thing for me he always talks shit about how I play games everyday even it is less than 1 hour and I play piano for 2 hours a day and he still thinks I’m trash because the piece is diploma and it takes time to practice but he thinks it will be easy for me since he pays for the piano classes but that’s not how it works and he always forces me to do the way he wanted even it is not right. That is why I lost basically all my confidence

"do what you enjoy, don't do grade book stuff" Definitely feel that. I got taught piano properly for years and hated it. Then I learned trumpet and enjoyed it way more because I preferred the songs that I got to choose for grades, and now I'm in my university jazz band playing trumpet and play video game osts on my keyboard sometimes when I come home in the holidays. It's so much more enjoyable. No qualifications does mean no incentive to practise though so I definitely would be a better player if I continued with grades, but I also might not be a player at all.

Same here, except I mostly play bass guitar now. My piano teacher had me go through a book and play every thing. It was so boring, and I hated it. I can't believe my parents paid for that experience. My parents also tried to take me to a guitar lesson as well, and that went just as bad. I started playing songs I liked on piano through KZbin videos, and I loved it. For guitar and bass guitar, I pull up Ultimate Guitar or something similar. I have spent more time learning this way, but I definitely learned faster, and I love it.

Yeah, I'm with you there. I was homeschooled, so in order to finish school I was required to play the piano every school day. And cause of that, it eventually became a chore for me to even practice at all, which is a true shame. Now that I'm a college student I'll go back every now and then to play whatever I want to and it's much more relaxing.

Absolutely agree with this. My friend was forced to take piano lessons at a young age by her parents and she hated it. I started taking lessons as an adult, and my teacher customizes my lessons to fit the kind of things I want to learn. We talked about our experiences the other day and she said that if it had been more enjoyable and felt less like a punishment, that she might have stuck with it.

In high school, my friends and I would try to play our music for our choir concerts by ear on the piano in the practice room. It'd help solidify the parts in our brains but it was also really fun! I later learned guitar as well just by playing music I liked and I actually played a song for a talent show. I don't play either thing anymore, but piano was by far easier to play. I learned a lot of songs just by trying to play songs I knew by ear on the keys. I don't know all the technical lingo but I know my way around the keys 😁

I've been playing the ukulele for years and it was hard especially since back home in Hawaii we all had to learn how to play in order to pass middle school so after learning some difficult songs, I ended up learning how to play anime, games and metal songs on there at my own pace without someone breathing down my neck wanting/making me cry lol this is absolutely amazing!!!!
