People don't always realize that, while playing through a traditional pokemon game, (one with wild pokemon encounters) your pokemon that you use for a while are going to get really strong. Pokemon gain EVs for every pokemon they defeat, which increase their stats in unseen ways that are separate from level. (The newest games let you see what's going on behind the scenes, and actually have some freedom with it). Colosseum has EVs and IVs and everything that a "real" pokemon game has, but it gives you a VERY limited amount of pokemon that can be defeated in the entire game. Your pokemon not only level up less, but gain way fewer EVs from random battles so they don't get their stats boosted nearly as much. Most of the games give you specific advantages, but this one largely doesn't. So when people call this the "hardest official pokemon game" they are not lying.
@iss20753 жыл бұрын
True, but even thought it's a "short" game with not that many trainer battles, you can rebattle most of them, and their teams gradually get stronger too. And there are the colosseums and Mt. Battle too, I play this on Dolphin with PKHex so I can check everything's EVs when I complete the game and normally the Pokemon have 510 EVs or not far under by the time they're strong enough to beat the final boss (although I don't use items, and I usually play with weaker Pokemon than Metagross, Suicune, etc, so I have to get higher levels to win).

One of my favorite quotes is by the film director Orson Welles: "The enemy of art is the absence of limitations." That's why Colosseum and XD were so great.

@@armoredanteater609 I wouldn't say they had more freedoms - the series in Gen 3 was still very willing to experiment with new ideas, even in the mainline games. Sure, the mainline games are still a lot closer to a traditional experience, but nobody was concerned with stagnancy back then, partly because the inclusion of Abilities added a lot of depth, partly because the series regularly had supplemental games like Stadium and Colosseum, and partly because the games were still experimenting - just look at the changes between Ruby/Sapphire, FireRed/LeafGreen, and Emerald. FRLG has mechanics like the Vs. Seeker and the Elite 4 Rematch, Emerald has the Battle Frontier & a ton of QoL for breeding/catching Mons with the right Natures and IVs and such.

SUCH a cool game. Being a thief taking down a tyrannical organization is a thrilling plot, and the camera movement, and all of the trainer and Pokemon animations are so evocative! Pretty dang tough, though. Some of the music is fantastic. Other tracks are a bit odd, haha. I think I do like XD a bit more and more refined, but this was pretty epic too.
@IschmarVI Жыл бұрын
While the plot isn't as developed as I would like it to be, I don't think that is necessarily a problem. The foundation is solid and everything else, our imagination can easily work out. The "simplicity" of the plot even adds the element of interpretation, which means, that everyone will interpretate the storyline ever so slightly differently. Pretty cool, imo. Really goes to show that a plot doesn't need to be extremely complicated in order to work.
@johnpaullogan1365 Жыл бұрын
@@IschmarVI remember this is still a pokemon game. you are basically comparing harry potter to bernstein bears and saying you would have preferred shakespeare. xd smoothed out most of the rough edges mechanically but the story dropped to dr seuss levels. still better than the bears and more entertaining than it should ever logically be but no harry potter or shakespeare

Some of the animations of the gen 4 pokemon from Revolution are absolutely incredible. Special mention does have to go out to Honchcrow's fainting animation, but also a lot of signature moves were done justice. A lot of damage taken animations are also straight fire, and that's just true of all four games. It's also important to point out that many of the animation quirks and movement gimmicks of a lot of pokemon were invented in these games, that would later be applied to their animated gen 5 sprites, and eventually their main game models. Kyogre's chompers, for example, I don't believe had appeared at all before Colloseum, yet are now a staple of people's perception of Kyogre. Speaking of the trio, Rayquaza's gen 3 sprite is frankly kinda booty, so this is also the first time I think it really appeared in a form truer to what we know now. These games laid a lot of conceptual work for some of these pokemon in movement on top of looking good doing it.
@V-Jes3 жыл бұрын
@@nousername191 Not really sad but expected that when the devs have to deal with fewer models they can give them more animations what is why Stadium 1 (and i mean the OG Stadium 1 and not the 1 that got released in the west) only had 40 Pokemon in it, while in the mainline games they had to animate like 900-1000 Pokemon models at once for XY, and keep in mind that every variation of a Pokemon is it's own model etc...

Ariados, Forretress, Skarmory, Heracross, Misdreavus, Sunflora, Noctowl, Stantler, Magcargo & Jumpluff are some of the most underrated Pokemon in the game. Ariados is my favourite Pokemon in this game as it gets Sludge Bomb on purification and you will have a much easier time defeating Miror B's Ludicolo in Realgam Tower but train Ariados on Mount Battle once you purify it so it will be higher in level than Miror B's Ludicolo. I also recommend taking Noctowl through the entire game as you can spam Earthquake with Flygon and just to let you know Ampharos is the best Electric Pokemon in the game the Plusle that Duking gives you counts as a traded Pokemon and the EXP boost allows it to level up rather fast. Slugma is extremely underrated in this game and once you evolve it into Magcargo it can be very reliable it comes with Flamethrower on purification yes it has two 4x weaknesses to Water & Ground but you can get around that. Jumpluff & Sunflora will be very reliable to you if you decided to raise them as their Speed doubles when Sunny Day is used. Piloswine is also a great choice to raise its typing of Ice/Ground is good. Swablu can be a great Pokemon to raise but it will be even better once you evolve into Altaria. Ursaring is obtainable in the Snagem Hideout in the post game and it will do wonders for you in the Deep Colosseum if you decide to raise it.

alright smallant ive got a challenge for you. I call it a SufferLocke 1. Nuzlocke Rules are in play (1 per route, faint=death etc) 2. you only have 1 chance to capture a pokemon and they must be at full health, you cannot use status effects either (paralysis, sleep etc) 3. If you run into that same pokemon on the same route your run is over and you must reset the game. (no savescumming) 4. If/When the Master Ball is obtained you only have a time limit of 10 minutes to use it. If you still have the Master Ball after the limit, you must either toss it or put it in the PC 5. when a pokemon is caught over the 6-Pokemon limit one must be sacrificed and replaced with the newest one (released/replace) 6. Gift Pokemon are banned entirely (Castform, Eevee, etc.) 7. If by chance you capture a legendary, you are unable to use it unless you sacrifice at least 3 party members. 8. if a shiny is found, it is immune to the sacrifice clause and can be boxed as an alternative to releasing if it ever dies 9. if a gym leader KO's 5 of your 6 pokemon the run is over 10. you must remain either at or below the gym leaders highest level. 11. If a pokemon goes over the level cap you cannot use it until that gym is defeated 12. You cannot trade pokemon as I count them as gift pokemon 13. Your starter cannot evolve past its second stage. After it hits the next stage an everstone must be on it at all times 14. going back to rule 2 for a second. if you run into the same pokemon but on a DIFFERENT route, it is up to be captured 15. Yes, I am making this shit up as I go. 16. The entire game must be beaten in a time limit of 48 Hours starting from when you get your Starter Pokemon for the 1st time. after you get your starter the timer starts and does not stop until the game is completed, even if you take a break, etc. 17. If you do this challenge, post a video here because I cant hop on Twitch most of the time and finally 18. These Challenges are Valid in the following games: Red Blue and Yellow, Gold and Silver, Emerald, Diamond and Pearl, X and Y, Ultra Sun Ultra Moon. Anything not listed is not valid and the run cannot be done in that game. Think you can beat it?

I remember suffering through this game with a Meganium and a Misdreavus as a kid and somehow beating it. Needles to say, it took many many tries

crazy how the 3d game cube pokemon games look better than the 3d pokemon games we have now for the newest generations lmao

I didn't find this game incredibly hard back when I was like 11 and playing it. I purified all of the good ones and used my GameCube to transfer them over to Emerald. This music is bringing back some MEMORIES.

The game gives you enough opportunities to deal with the difficulty, including an unlimited amount of trainer battles in Mt. Battle. So yeah, it is not THAT difficult if you factor in all of these things, but the thing DOES throw quite a few roadblocks at you that are not to be taken lightly (dakim 2 when he leads flygon and claydol is ... an experience)

It's validating to know that the struggles we had with this game as kids was real!

Dude... this is brutal. Firstly, Flygon never gets to use any of its mega attack score, because Dragon Type was Special in Gens 1-3. Secondly, Tyranitar. Thirdly, Silver Wind does so much because Scizor draws from its Attack score--Bug was Physical in Gens 1-3. I completely understand mixing it up, so the last confusing one I can think of is: Ghost Type was Physical. It just hurts me every time, because I learned all this a long time ago, and it's so unclear what types are supposed to be Physical/Special... and I'm sure that's why they did away with the Type determination, and just made everything have a Phys/Spec. Split. Also, going into this fight >15 levels lower than the last boss? That's gutsy. Kudos to you, man.

I love how the big brain strats are exactly why you were having such a hard time. "Let me uhhhh waste a turn and switch out to ______" *AI sets up a weather condition or paralyzes/confuses your team* "oops! Let me do this everytime the whole way through and underlevel my team as well!" xD

Pokemon Colosseum was one of my favorite game as a kid. I mean it's still one of my favorite Pokemon game. It has a lot of flaws but I really like the story, the atmosphere and the music. The difficulty made the game challenging and it was a real pride when i managed to finish it.
