Yes guys!! Today we’re joined by the World’s Best Defender Ruwen Filus! Ruwen has a highest world ranking of 18 and has won multiple medals with Team Germany including a silver medal at the World Championships!
In the video, I do some training with Ruwen, he teaches me how to defend and we take a look at the rubber he chops with… The Butterfly Feint Long 3. We also surprise him with the new Diode Pro blade to see how he gets on with it.
Enjoy!

Great video! I would like to add that he also won a WTT Contender back in 2022. It had an amazing comeback in the men's singles finals against Lin Yun-yu. He came back from 3-0 behind, an insane match. Great defender and great variation of playstyle on the world stage.

I’ve been considering putting together a defense heavy inspired paddle and rubber for a little while. I’m mostly just familiar with Butterfly equipment, that’s what I’ve been playing since 1985! I’m wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what paddle I should go for from Butterfly, something that is definitely defense oriented. Also as far as the rubber…I’m considering Feint Long for the backhand and Tackiness Chop or Tackiness Chop D for my forehand. So clearly, a really defense oriented setup. I’ve grown up playing more of an all around style game, used an all around blade and usually Sriver FX rubber on both sides. So, pretty old school stuff in these days. But it’s worked for me for a long time obviously and I haven’t changed anything. But now I’m looking to try out a different style, the type that I a.ways hated playing against…heavy choppers! 😤😊. That style has always frustrated me. Now I want to learn it and be one of those players! 😅. The hardest part for me is that as an American, there’s not many places to play around where I live. I’d have to drive an hour to get somewhere to play a good game. Back when I started to really play, like in tournaments, it’s was the mid to late 80’s through the late 90’s and there were clubs and tournaments all around my location. I got my first official rating at a tournament I was in when I was 11 years old playing, and sometimes beating, grown men! And that wasn’t u heard of or anything back then. But now there seems to be so much less clubs with real players. And I’m an old man now basically with nowhere to play. If I put together a new setup though, that might motivate me to go ahead and make that hour long drive to play! Appreciate any advice I can get though! Awesome video as always TTD!!

I consider Feint Long III as a very secure long pip for placing balls on the table, but it's not the most difficult for the opponent. Options like TSP Curl P1, HellFire are more complicated
@duncanwraight
@duncanwraight 6 ай бұрын
FL3 is a grippy pip. it can generate a surprising amount of its own spin it doesn't have a lot of reversal like other LPs, but that in its own right can be confusing for opponents not sure you would necessarily call it "safe" though, as its lack of reversal makes it more difficult to chop with - you're getting less assistance from the rubber
@Felix-st2ue
@Felix-st2ue 6 ай бұрын
I would rather describe it as playing as close to a normal Rubber as possible with long Pips.
@TTDefender
@TTDefender 6 ай бұрын
Curl P1 is a great option for modern defenders, but very different from Feint Long III. You need a different motion to make it work. Hellfire isn’t meant to defend away from the table. It’s more disruptive, less secure and almost impossible to generate your own spin, which is very well possible with FL III. For defending, it’s about all aspects of the game, not just one. I tried Hellfire, Tactics, Curl P1 and FL III. My choice is the latter for its Allround capabilities.
@NoSpeechForTheDumb
@NoSpeechForTheDumb 3 ай бұрын
Usually defenders who attack regularly (which includes all world class defenders) prefer pips which are not too befuddling because that would interfere with their own attacking game if the awkward spin comes back at them. Ding Song who was a complete attacker beforehand even opted for chopping with short pimples because that would produce predictable returns which he could attack with his devastating forehand.

How do you create „power from the ground“ with chopping? In topspin, you can push off the ground with your legs to create power, but in chopping you don‘t go up but down, so do you just use your arm in chopping or how do you create power from your legs for chopping?
@NoSpeechForTheDumb
@NoSpeechForTheDumb 3 ай бұрын
Usually only the arm is used. Producing a lot of power isn't even necessary with chopping because the goal is to use the kinetic energy of the opponent.

He‘s using a special blade - a Diode especially made for staff players and not available for us mere mortals anymore. You could order it from BTY Japan a couple of years ago iirc, but not anymore. And Ilius is more of a close to the table, blocking oriented LP rubber with very different capabilities compared the FL III. Not really a great fit for Filus playing style.
