Thank you so much for sharing this information. It’s good to learn from people who have tried these things and figured them out from experience vs just spreading here say. Most people that warn people against most things have never tried the thing for themselves. You are a G for this. Also, it’s a good lesson to learn that all cooking methods aren’t made equal. I’m glad you made it to tell your story.

In SC, people have been eating Polk weed for a long time, but only the young shoots and leaves in the spring. Never larger stalks or any that have any purple color in them. My grandmother said her and my father was having, some kinda boils, risings, skin eruptions, someone told her to eat certain amount of berries for a certain number of days, like 6berries a day, for six days she didn't remember the exact amount, but she said her and him who was mabe 6or7 years old, ate the berries for the prescribed days, and neither had another problem with skin eruptions again. Ive ate as many as 12 at a time, with no problems.

Glad you made it! And here I thought I was the only person who had ever experienced that type of "reaction" when eating something (with EXACTLY the same outcome). I have loved eggs my whole life. Heck, I raised chickens for two decades. Last two times I ate eggs, exactly the same thing happened (all the way down to using a towel as a pillow while sleeping on the cool bathroom tile floor - it feels so good when you/re suffering like that for some reason).

@@RuffCut Birds I believe can eat pokeweed seeds. I do not know if chickens do, but here is a list of native birds that do. If chickens eat them or something else that is toxic it could get into the eggs. The birds that you are most apt to see dining on pokeberries are year-round residents such as northern mockingbirds, brown thrashers, eastern bluebirds, American crows, cardinals, starlings and red-bellied woodpeckers.

Sorry you got sick..... My Dad used to fry up poke stems, but he used the tender twigs and rolled them in cornmeal..... Said the cornmeal kept them from making a person sick.... We loved them, but at my age (84) I don't take chances.... Perhaps they reacted with the aluminum pan you used?.....

If you are gonna eat the stalk, I heard you have to peel the outer layer. Don't bake it because the heat may not distribute evenly enough to destroy the toxins. I has to be fried like fried okra so that the heat in the oil is distributed throughout the peeled stalks in cornmeal. Also, you might have had a berry seed in one of them. Or you ate the part of the stalk that is closest to the root. The root is the worst part of the plant to eat. It's worse than the berries. The leaves just need one boil but it has to boil for 10 minutes in a big pot. In smaller pots you gotta boil and add water at least 3 times. It's the volume of water and time boiling that is important. Frying them at a higher temperature till crispy will also destroy the toxins.

She smoked it in the fall time of year, for breathing problems. Our family grew tobacco in East Tennessee, so that would be air cured. I imagine that was the process. It must have helped her. Sorry, I don’t have anymore information.
