In SC, people have been eating Polk weed for a long time, but only the young shoots and leaves in the spring. Never larger stalks or any that have any purple color in them. My grandmother said her and my father was having, some kinda boils, risings, skin eruptions,someone told her to eat certain amount of berries for a certain number of days, like 6berries a day, for six days she didn't remember the exact amount, but she said her and him who was mabe 6or7 years old, ate the berries for the prescribed days, and neither had another problem with skin eruptions again. If you are gonna eat the stalk, I heard you have to peel the outer layer. Don't bake it because the heat may not distribute evenly enough to destroy the toxins. I has to be fried like fried okra so that the heat in the oil is distributed throughout the peeled stalks in cornmeal. Also, you might have had a berry seed in one of them. Or you ate the part of the stalk that is closest to the root. The root is the worst part of the plant to eat. It's worse than the berries. The leaves just need one boil but it has to boil for 10 minutes in a big pot. In smaller pots you gotta boil and add water at least 3 times. It's the volume of water and time boiling that is important. Frying them at a higher temperature till crispy will also destroy the toxins.

My great grandmother smoked polk weed for breathing problems. Not me, I eat only young leaves parboiled 3 times. Then taste similar to spinach to me. Glad your ok. Enjoyed your testimony of the Lord 😊

That's interesting. Did she just dry the leaves like tobacco? What did she say it did for her?
@joelgrubb83682 жыл бұрын
She smoked it in the fall time of year, for breathing problems. Our family grew tobacco in East Tennessee, so that would be air cured. I imagine that was the process. It must have helped her. Sorry, I don’t have anymore information.

When you were talking about the incident you had in the bathroom,you could’ve called a family member in your family to give you assistance,although you didn’t have to let yourself ache like that.
