Such a great explanation of why WR doesn't mean shit for most SoloQ players. Imagine you have a champion whose only job is to hinder your enemy laner and your champion is useless outside that, but it's so easy and effective that It does his job right every game. You'll basically always have a 50% winrate, as you're making the game effectively a 4v4 and trusting your side to carry you. Now imagine a champion that can be present and influence the game in every fight and objective but it's unreasonably hard to play. You mess most plays, leaving you with a winrate below 50%. Wich one has the higher impact? The second, as it's the one that gives you agency over the game. Yes, it's negative impact, but impact nonetheless. A better or more experienced player who consistently executes his plays correctly will naturally end up with a positive WR with the second champion way higher than what they could archieve if they used the first champion. However, if we assume most players in this game are unable to play the second character correctly, the total WR of said champion will be below average, even if the skilled player finds great success with it.

Honestly, yeah, this, so much I've been having insane winrate with Tahm adc, with random supports mind you, and I just accepted it as me being good on that particular pick and knowing what I have to do to win while also doing that But this video made me realise WHY, because I have so much agency in lane, it is in my hands to stay even and it is in my hands to stomp out the enemy carry, the same way in midgame it is my job to disrupt and kill the backline, the way I always have a clear objective, an objective I can always do with agency, which is what put me on my 65% winrate in now 80 games of TK adc

Makes sense, but the maths could be made if you took only gm+ games and first champ still have more winrate overall, and if these 500 best players of the server can't execute second champ, it means it's too hard to execute and therefore has less impact on a game. BUT if vocal comms existed in the game, you prob would have the second champ have more impact as theses are easier to operate as a team, but most lol games aren't in pro or as full teams hence the first champ will always have more impact, and more winrate. Could be argued if the definition of impact was too blurry tho.

It's interesting to consider your thoughts on Winrate not directly correlating to the actual effectiveness of the strategy. I've definitely noticed that I do better on tank champions because 1) I'm dogshit and it's hard to fuckup being a tank in low elo, and 2) tanks often have huge impact just because of their design; they don't die quickly and often dish out cc which is always a fight decider. I mostly play Sion, and sion has the added benefit of being a strong turret taker if you have demolish. His ult lets him get out of sticky situations as long as you keep a clear exit and maintain awareness, so you can sidelane effectively. In a team fight, Sion Q's are brutal, knocking up multiple people and rendering entire sections of a fight "uninhabitable". As a solo laner he's fairly self-sufficient and doesn't need to rely on his team. Sion's health stacking means that it's easier for him to keep up when he's behind as he's gaining extra stats that other champs don't get.

I like hearing azzap talking about the difference in something i would think is KINDA self evident what impact is, same in FPS, you can have 3-10, but those 3 kills can net you several rounds won, every kill can be made into a round won, THEN it screws their economy up so you get more safe round wins. Same in league, it all depends on what you do and WHEN you do it, making sure late game carries get to scale, you had impact, killing and pushing early for snowball/early game champs you have impact. The fact that people NEVER learn this show that people has a too narrow viewpoint on what matters in the game.

I love Azzap mentality overall, guy is very smart, but impact does have a lot more impact on winrate than he makes it to be. The game isn't as coinflip as people tend to think, even in soloq. It doesn't mean that every champ with higher winrate than another has more impact than the lower winrate one. But logic and maths would prove that impact does make a difference on winrate far more than said in the video. Could prove it, but most people wouldn't care. Would do it if enough people are interested. Also yes, you can prove that through numbers data alone.

I love damage only metas. I think they're great. I think that the problem with tank meta wasn't the hyper mobile assassins stacking defenses and being impossible to kite with frozen gauntlet but the fact that people just didn't die fast enough. That was the issue. Winrate and impact have to correlate otherwise are you saying that multiple high winrate champions just had good teammates in every game? A high winrate means that the champion wins more than those with a lower winrate, and that has to be because that champion has a higher impact. If not, then every high winrate champ just got lucky in draft.

High win rate must mean high impact is just a bad assumption. High impact is referring to a high potential ceiling for how much a champ can impact the game but it says nothing about how consistent that is. In a game with 10 players a champ that is consistently a minor positive can have a better win rate than one which hard carries 30% of games but also gets crushed in 30%. High win rate = good average High Impact = higher potential for solo carry If you are better than your opponents (or a one trick) then high impact becomes more and more valuable to win games but if you’re the average player it’s not as important.

Take yuumi and azir. Yuumi could have a very high winrate but the champion is low impact, in the sense that it's not much how you carry with it, but the champion's kit per se winning games. Other people in your team are able to function better and therefore the champ has a high winrate, but it's not so much about what you do compared with other champions. An azir can have a huge impact when played well, but the winrate is low due to his difficulty. There are many variables in the winrate of a champion, and the impact it has is just one of them.
