Always insightful thx. Sorry about your rough night on shift. I feel your pain. Hopefully you had something cool and not a bunch of BS.

I always found that waiting 12 hours from when I first noticed heifers in heat was the most successful in an AI. Plus, being neurotic, I also began using 2 straws, 1 at first sign of heat, and the 2nd 12 hours later. At times, I still missed... I feel your pain.

I was suggested the two straw method as well from some other people. I definitely wish this was a more reasonable option for me. I think ultimately I will need to start doing it myself for the best chances of success. Not because my guy now is bad, but because being able to do it my self will ensure I’ll always get at least two attempts

@@WR_Ranch have you been using tail painting to detect heat? Select Sires, many years ago introduced us to brush on tail paint. A bunch of years later, Alta Genetics introduced us to spray on tail paint. Was great to find heats and repeat heats. We liked to see bleed off 12 to 24 hours later. We had a semen tank at heifer barn and at cow barn. Semen company checked liquid nitrogen every 30 days and topped off as needed. Check which companies service your area.

Breeding technician walked through each pen every day touching up paint and breeding whichever had been fresh at least 65 days and had not been put on the "DNB-do not breed" list. Technician found aborts, when they happened (750 milking herd). We calved year round, averaged 2 births a day. Techs got 38 to 60% preg rates herd-wide.

Feel for you Rob, my bull broke down, and only 9 cows were in calf. From that 1 never calved, and 1 calf died from the placenta not sealing off. So my entire saleable calf drop was 3 for the year from 40. This year bit better 20 from 23. Not very good financially, also cattle prices have fallen by 30%, ah thee joys of farming😢.

That’s horrible! I’m glad this year went better. Did you do anything different this year that you feel might have made the difference other than the bull?
@stevebowman421

No nothing different, the bull that I😅 bought to replace him still throws a nice calf but boy is he lazy, 14 heifers and the last calf dropped 13 weeks after the first. He’s getting another chance, same 14 but now they are not blushing virgins, other than 2 that never dropped a calf, possibly because they were from sets of twins. Also had 3 calves that died at birth, cause possibly breach delivery and sac over their heads, who knows. I also bought in a new Shorthorn yearling bull and put him in with 17 heifers, 5 weeks later he was standing a the fence looking at 5 heifers that will be getting joined next May, like to give heifers 2 years, so calve at 3 plenty of time to grow a good frame. So it will be interesting to see how long the 2 different bulls perform.

Will you have Registered Heifers or Cows for Sale this year?
@WR_Ranch
@WR_Ranch 7 ай бұрын
Hey Dan! I unfortunately cannot register anything, as the ADCA requires either 3 or 4 previous generations registered, if I recall correctly. All 3 of my cows were not registered by their previous owners which it’s my understanding that my calves cannot be registered, even though my sire is a registered animal. I do believe I will have at least one pure breed heifer going up for sale however

First two steers and maybe a heifer will be going late summer 2024 depending on rain. At that point they will be about 26 months old.
