We have seen this happen before. Nicuraguan Sign Language (ISN) emerged in the 1960s or 1970s - when deaf children with no language were put together in a deaf school. They needed to chat, so started gesturing. These gestures became signs, and acquired a basic grammar. Over a number of generations of chidlren passing it down one to the next it grew in vocabulary and grammar. This was studied pretty well in the 1980s and 1990s - so we have a pretty good ideas of the early stages. I recommend you research ISN more. It's a great case study for this!

@Aronora check out Clongcraft, it already exists :D To do something like that you just have to enforce that no-one speaks any existing language

d) all of the above. I think they're all kinda true, baby babbling, monkey warning calls, echolalia and onomatopoeia, and social belonging like repeating eeeyo to be part of the in-group, all supplemented with gestures. Anything that gets information across to another being is language. Even bad and good can be the same word. Good content! I already knew a lot of this as you can see, but you compiled it nicely.

there's also the theory that language came about through gossip as a replacement for grooming to find out who was trustworthy in a group.

Question: for numbers, would they just assign for example, random syllables that the people agree on for 1 to 10, then something like "2 10s and 3" for 23?
@Aronora
@Aronora 8 күн бұрын
@nggyu-nglyd-ngraady Everything could happen. We have seen base 2, 5, 6, 10, 12 systems being used, whatever their culture feels like. If they think base-10 is the way to go, they might have such a system: but much higher numbers won’t be used in the early days anyways, what for? Counting sea shells?
@nggyu-nglyd-ngraady
@nggyu-nglyd-ngraady 3 күн бұрын
@Aronora It could be used for counting the number of people left on the island every day, to ensure that everyone is safe.
