I've always wanted to try one of this builds This one came up great! I had a good laugh when you tried to get the background into the cabinet! I had the same issue in my last foam build 🤣 Keep an eye on leaks apparently that's the only real weakness in these cabinets.
@SaltedCarmel10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tips! I actually took the metal top of the cabinet and ended up using it as a tray underneath. I'll definitely keep an eye out though!

I really like that you prebuilt on styrofoam board and not directly on the glass. Good luck with your springtails and isopods! Looking forward to a follow up.
@SaltedCarmel10 ай бұрын
Thanks! What makes it super nice is the foam board isn’t even siliconed to the back glass. This way I can take it out for maintenance or easy moving if I ever need to! I’ll be back with an update soon!!
@LukeMcGuireoides9 ай бұрын
Looks awesome. You can apply substrate directly to the wet expanding foam and skip carving and silicone. Ever Evolving Exotics does it on all his builds. Makes sense. The foam is stickier than the silicone.
@SaltedCarmel9 ай бұрын
Definitely could have done that. However, I decided against it as I wanted to have direct control over the shape of my background. Expanding foam tends to expand in directions you don't always intend it to, but that method would have definitely saved me a lot of time!

Really creative and cool. Glad I randomly found this. Aftern 10k into a reef tank years ago, I’d like to try this… for less $ hopefully. lol.

@@SaltedCarmel yeah I’ve been wanting to do something with my son.. a small ecosystem or something. This is great. I’d love to do a salt aquarium again but make it much smaller. Maybe 25 gal and after I move so I don’t ever have to break it down. lol. Subbed and looking forward to updates. I also noticed people mentioning these rare plants being sold at big stores for cheap all of a sudden. It’s all over Reddit. You know more about that than me but a heads up if not too late to find any. - Pete

@SaltedCarmel10 ай бұрын
@@plant-a-holic The light simply rests on top of the terrarium. I used one of the glass shelves instead of the metal top to allow the light to get through! Hope that makes sense!

how much did this cost you, from cabinet to plants to substrate?
@SaltedCarmel10 ай бұрын
The cabinet was $78 from IKEA. I purchased about $50 worth of plants, but I also used some plants I already had at home. Substrate was about $30 and silicone, expanding foam, and foam board was around $40. I'd say this project is pretty easily done under $250. Hope that helps!
