There is a way to beat the trust puzzle: You tell the other person you are going to steal, and do so. You promise that if you win the money, you will split it with them after the game. Classically, this game usually also says that if both steal they get nothing. If that was the case in this one, the other player would have only one choice to possibly gain the money: Trust that you will actually split it after and choose split, if they steal there is zero chance because you already told them you would steal. Of course, someone might steal anyway out of spite and distrust, but I suspect most will try for a chance at money over spite.
