Very cool. I'm pretty handy, and often thought about doing this. I already lay out my own balls, and then take them to the pro shop for drilling. After plugging all my weight holes myself, I used my spinner and a blade to cut my plugs. This inspires me! Hey, what's up with the hanging sneakers?
@hihbowling4 жыл бұрын
Go for it. Most shops won't layout a ball the way you want it. Sometimes you want to try so unconventional stuff. Those were my old bowling shoes. Retired and hanging in the rafters....hahaha

I want to DIY a ball spinner, my research says ball spinners have RPM of 400 & 600. ** What if I used a 4 1/2" right angle grinder ?? I know the RPM is 11,000. BUT could it work, if I got it mounted securely. My $$ are limited, I found an used one for $50. I just wondered if you had any knowledge OF or ABOUT this kind of idea....

I've seen grinders and drills being used. I even made one out of a door motor. Just needs to be centered and balanced.

I've been on the look out for the parts to put together a DIY press. Keeping an eye on the Facebook equipment page, craigslist, marketplace, etc, for the past 6 months. Then I hit the jackpot this weekend, and found someone selling a Brunswick branded Pro Shop drill press. It was originally purchased new in 1994, and used in a Pro Shop before they upgraded to a newer digital press. It's been sitting in a shop, rarely used (they said it drilled a couple balls a year on it at most), but it still works great. Got the whole package, drill press, plug cutter, full set of bits and jig, for way less than I was planning on spending on the DIY set up. So those of you interested, patience pays off eventually.

Thanks for this video. I was wondering if my drill press would work, because the pro shops always have milling machines. I noticed that a lot of them prefer to drill the finger holes with pitched outward, not towards the center of the ball. What are your thoughts on that?

Depends on the bowler. I've gone both ways.

When I "Index" or center a ball jig, I'll first mark out the center of the ball cup, then put the jig on zero-zero. I then take a long steel rod, put it in the drill chuck and pull it down until it hits the center of the cup. After that it's a matter of drilling a hole and using pitch gauges to check. I've owned my own stuff since the late 1970's, but packed it away for nearly 20 years after I had to quit bowling. I dug it out a few years ago and once again went through the index procedure to make sure everything was aligned. A large number of pro shops used a Rudell Bowling Ball Jig well into the early 2000's. They've got to be out there in the used market somewhere

I'm interested in starting to drill my own equipment. You mentioned to find a jig first, to make sure you have enough height. The jig you have is about the tallest I've seen. I'm having a hard time finding a used jig and might end up machining my own jig to hold the ball, and purchase a Mill or a Drill Press and add a Mill table. What is the good HP for the press? Also what is your height from Table to Spindle?
@hihbowling2 жыл бұрын
About 18 1/2" from table to chuck. Not sure on the HP but its a 17" floor press.

You can get a plug cutter from Inovative, order on there site. innovativebowling.com/Plug-Cutter-12-SS_p_137.html Also you can get a jig from KMT Bowling you will have to purchase a mil and drill using fraction to decimal conversion.. kmtballjig.com/ You would attached the jig to the mil and Zero it out before drilling, using a test ball.

Question if your a good bowler should you be able to score high with house balls or I should be bringing my own ball when I bowl
@hihbowling4 жыл бұрын
Whatever you throw should be fit for your hand.
@troymedlock55704 жыл бұрын
Depends on your throwing style. If you throw a hook it’s best bet to bring your own ball. If you throw straight ball then a house ball will do. IMO

I've been using a KMT hand drill jig for a while now. Works well, but is super limited in what it can do, so I'm upgrading to a set up like yours. Finding a jig online for under grand is tough, and finding one that's all in one like yours is damn near impossible. So my plan is to re-use the jig portion of my KMT, and mount it to a milling table.. and mount the milling table/jig to a drill press. And the 17" Harbor Freight drill press should be more than enough for the job.
@hihbowling2 жыл бұрын
I looked at KMT before I found my jig. Smart idea. Just borrow a pitch gauge to make sure you're calibrated.
@deadpolymers34162 жыл бұрын
@Jamal Mac The entire reason I Picked up a KMT was because I switched from 1 to 2 hands... and it was easier (and way cheaper) to drill my own stuff without the complications of a thumb. I never drilled a ball before, and didn't know anything about the technical aspects of actually laying a ball out, prior to getting the KMT. So in my opinion it's a great way to get into drilling your own stuff. Far less expensive than buying a drill press, and finding a used ball jig, or paying $1k+ for a new jig... or $3k plus for a super basic preassembled drilling set up. I basically just took an old, cracked ball, and layed it out and drilled 15-20 times, until I felt comfortable putting holes into new stuff. I've drilled probably 20-25 new balls since I got it... saving $65 a ball off what the pro shop would charge for grips and drilling. Saving enough money to pay for the KMT... and enough to upgrade into a proper drill press at some point.

Just watch this. To have it drill your ball in the shop cost extra $100 with vise IT so I build my own bowling ball drilling machine 4 years ago. I bought same WEN floor standing drill press like yours. Build my own clamp and adjustable X Y table to clamp the ball. I also use the plug cutter to calibrate. Drill bits are expensive and they get dull easy after drilling a few ball so I bought a carbide tip Fostner bit in amazon for $10 to $20 and it cuts better and cleaner. Great video.
