Women are starting to embrace our natural state. When we get older and wiser we realise we don't need to please men at our expense. Our priorities change and that's a good thing. Because once we stop using that dye bottle, what's left is our true self. ❤

I'm 69 and I had my hair colored professionally for over 20 years, however, in-between I had to use powders, root coverup dyes that messed with my scalp. I also began to lose my hair which had always been thick and healthy. I suppose my scalp was screaming at me to stop and the pandemic lockdowns were the final straw. I went cold turkey and four years later, my hair has grown back; it's long, healthy and I receive lots of compliments. I also wish I had done this sooner.

I’ve had so many people compliment me on my hair! Strangers will come up to me and tell me how beautiful it is. I have long single length hair now and I love it! Fewer trips to hairdresser, easy to put in a ponytail or up in a clip, it takes care of itself. Very little fussing. Good for you, encouraging others! I decided in my late 20’s to never dye my hair again. I didn’t really do it a bunch before that point… I worked around a bunch of other older women and the way they talked about their hair and how they needed to dye it would make me cringe. 😬. I just got to the point where I felt bad for other women who thought that their natural beauty was not beautiful. Then on top of that I jumped on the natural living wagon and started purging my life of all the toxic chemicals. It just blows my mind how toxic a lot of things are and hair dye is just awful. So many women will say, "Well, I would do that too if I knew it would turn out like yours," and I have to correct them by saying, "I had no idea what it was going to look like until I did it." I hated the two-year grow out process (looked terrible), and then another few years to get the long length I wanted, however it was SO worth it. My advice is to quit cold-turkey and wear a scarf, hat, or wig until it's grown out. I ruined my hair (bleach to lessen demarcation only lead to my hair breaking off).

@@UESGrl21 I’m in my 60s and as my (undyed) hair became increasingly grey it also became frizzy. The individual grey hairs are a different texture, which results in a dull, fizzy look. After menopause, my hair also began to thin. Things that have helped me tremendously: more focus on conditioning, including the use of a *leave-in conditioner* (avoid putting this near the scalp, as it will weight the hair down); *not* shampooing every day; using a flatiron to smooth out the frizzies (again, *NOT* daily, to avoid heat damage); and adding a collagen peptide powder to my diet (I add it to coffee or smoothies). Collagen diminishes as we age, causing our skin, nails, and hair to dry and weaken. The benefit of collagen supplementation is supported by a growing body of independent scientific research. I initially added it hoping to benefit my joints (not much luck for me there), so I was surprised to suddenly notice that my hair and nails had stopped breaking, hair had stopped falling out as much, and both were growing faster and looking healthier. The change for me was pretty dramatic. My hair is about 90% grey and I love it again!

By the time I turned 40, I was tired of it, and now I'm 52 and enjoy the gray. Because I kept my hair short, it took no time for it to grow in, thankfully. I feel better about myself, and if I want to have some color, there are options that won't hurt my hair. I'm just so happy that I don't have to color my hair every three weeks.

I have a love hate relationship with my gray salt/pepper hair. Personally, I think it looks nicer if you still have a young face. If you are a bit older, like me, it is a bit more difficult to accept. Getting the right hairstyle and makeup can work wonders. I do believe in that. My hair also seems finer and thinner than when I colored it. Most of the gray is at the temples and I personally don't find that flattering. If you have nice thick hair, then I think gray looks nicer. Still the coloring stopped during the pandemic. Now I subtly leave some meches in my hair twice a year. Also to create some volume. So far I am satisfied with this. This is my personal opinion.

I had my hair highlighted at a salon for years. I never had a whole lot of grey but after i lost my hair from chemo (ladies, be careful about ovarian cancer), my hair grew back in quite grey. Im struggling because it really does age me, I am 59 but always looked a good 10 years younger. I love no upkeep and the money savings but i look older....help!

I quit, dyeing my hair when I was 28 I am 38 now I have mousy brown and grey hair. I really like my hair I really like my natural colour. I don't have any damage anymore. Some people ask me of I did it myself with the streaks. I didn't. When I did colour my hair I bleached it so bad it was falling out and breaking off it was really damaged and unhealthy. I never coloured it again after that. Now I care for it with everything and its grown back so much better. I actually couldn't care less its natural. My clothes and style and makeup are easier to go with everything. I think about the colouring process but then I know I would regret it straight afterwards. My hair is quite fine and it isn't strong enough to carry on colouring. You go to the salon they like to announce oh your hair is so fine/ thin. Yeah I already know .

I think grey hair does make people look older… but you can age gracefully and still look classy.

I stopped dying my hair about 7 years ago, I am almost 60. I get compliments about my grey hair. I have had people asking me if I died it. They were so surprised when I said it is natural.❤😊

I started going grey at 20 and made the decision to accept it as I didn’t want to spend my time on my hair rather than other activities. Over 45 years later without ever using hair dye, I have never regretted it. During the pandemic women would be looking at my hair and comment that they were considering ditching the dye. I was never a fan of dull, lifeless, over processed hair and have shiny soft hair and over the years people even asked where I got it frosted. People tell me that I would look younger if I colored my hair but those same people are overweight or sedentary and move like an older person so don’t look younger than their age. If that’s how people want their hair to look like, it’s their choice but they shouldn’t criticize my choice. I have 3 different autoimmune disorders so can’t blame it on hair dye.

Ive always been lucky. As a dirty blonde, with fine hair, I could just buy a box, rub it in, and be blonder. I usually do this two or three times a year. I tried growling it out during covid, but in my 60s my gray hair is disappointing, just strands, nothing interesting like so many of my friends. I’ll continue dying until it goes whiter, then I’ll go natural.

When I was 36, someone told me that I looked 45. I have been coloring it ever since. I'm 78, and today someone told me that I look like I'm in my 50s. I'm going to keep coloring it. I let it go as long as I can, and don't use the strongest solution. I really look and feel better colored. One day, when I'm old, I'll stop.😅

I am 58 and don't really have any gray hair (maybe a stray one here or there.) However, my hair, which naturally was a dark blonde or dirty blonde, has now become a very boring brown color. So, every now and then, I will try to lighten it, myself, with varying rates of success lol. I WISH I would get some interesting gray in there so I wouldn't have to mess with it. I think it would add the...I don't know what to call it...texture? variation? something that it doesn't have with this flat brown color it has become. There is nothing wrong with gray hair!

I’ve had an autoimmune disease my entire life. I used to dye my hair with henna years ago and I think that’s the only healthy way to go. My current routine is DIY hair and DIY hair color. My life is not established, I don’t have a career, I don’t make the money I want and I don’t have the life I want. All of it is still in progress. Therefore me changing my hair color whenever I want gives me a little bit of hope that life is in my control and that it will perhaps get better for me, one day. I love grey hair and one day I’ll go there when I actually have a life that’s established and doesn’t demand that I look younger. Also when I live in a different country, not the USA, that won’t age discriminate me as I grow older!
@grayawhile6 ай бұрын
Sadly ageism is a thing. And you are so right about the US. And honestly if dyeing your hair makes you feel good, then do it.

DYE AND BLEACH FREE since 2017! The most wonderful and important thing about your journey is the shift from “what THEY think” about your hair to “what I think.” In my case, I had a stylist literally turn my hair into ramen noodles-dried ones. I then found a stylist who would cut my hair into a Pixie. Shortly thereafter, I got a painful case of “frozen shoulder” and literally could not style my hair. The Pixie worked wonders, and I loved it. Now it’s grown out past my shoulders. So many things have changed! I don’t even THINK about gray hair anymore. I have things to do!

6 years ago I stopped dying my hair. After hearing a colleague saying she had to dye her roots every 10 days for the grey, I was like “nope!” Best decision ever. The transition wasn’t easy at certain points but I was having a lot of broken, dry thinning hair. Now I wash every 5 days and use castor oil soaks the night before and my hair is thicker, healthier. My skin tone and hair “fit” now. My dyed hair made my skin look ruddy (looking back on photos). If you’re on the fence, just do it and be patient.

I’ll be 62 and my grey hair began a few years ago. Right now it’s about 20 percent and I’ve been dying it but because of this I don’t want to anymore. I have seen so many women who look good with it and it’s not about changing the minds of others to go grey but it all about me deciding I think you look so great and your hair is so pretty. So I’m quitting

I dyed my hair from my early 20s because of gray hair but I never really liked the color of my brown hair. Then in 2020 after becoming ill, and just not having the ability to go to the salon, or even wanting to do it at home, I decided to bite the bullet and let it go gray. I absolutely love my dark gray with silver highlights. It almost looks like I’ve had it professionally done. And I to get compliments all the time which I never received in my younger years. I now enjoy playing with new makeup and new colors of clothing to accent my hair. For me, it’s been a win-win situation.

In 2020 when I couldn't see my hairdresser I decided I would just stop dying my hair altogether when the roots grew through, and for the first time I thought "Hey they don't look so bad!" All the dye is gone now, and I have healthier, thicker, shinier hair! I too have an autoimmune condition and since I stopped getting my hair dyed, that has improved too! Lots of girlfriends are doing the same too. Just a bit of purple shampoo now and then, to bring out the highlights and I'm good. Your hair looks fantastic, btw. It really does suit you (and it doesn't make you look older!)

I’ve been having blonde highlights on my light brown hair since I was 16 and I’m 55 now. I learnt from my Mum, you just carry on and the grey blends with the blonde. I haven’t changed how i look after my hair and it looks great …..so I’m told. 🤷♀️

Grey hair is fine if you don’t have wrinkles. That’s my opinion. If you are young and have grey hair, go for it. If you’re 50, there’s something more to think about.

I loved growing out my grays. But unfortunately, there’s a negative societal impact- can also affect your growth at work- it’s all optics. But your livelihood gets attached to it. I use henna and indigo. I’m lucky, I have dark hair that really benefits from this combo. Keeps my hair healthy. But it is a lot of time, effort, and clean up.

I stopped dying my hair almost 2 years ago, best decision ever. I dyed it from age 34 when women pestered me about my greys. In the beginning it was fun to change hair colour until it wasn't because my greys were not taking colour (I had much more greys). Then, my hairdresser went for brown dyes to avoid more damage. My holidays and life in general were scheduled around appointments to cover my greys. The only thing I care about now is to upkeep it; purple shampoo, hair masks and clarifying it and that's it. My hair is in top shape now.

Ive never dyed my Hair. I did use natural Henna a few times in my 20s, but basically I'm lazy and/or self-satisfied - my natural dark reddish blonde was fine. I'm 76 now and the hair is a silvery pale brown. Fine with me!

My father gifted me with his platinum blond hair. My hispanic mother always shamed me for the color of my hair. I started dying my hair in my tweens. I just stopped recently and all l have to say is thanks Dad. l should have never let Mom and other family members shame me into dying my hair just so l can fit in with their idea of beauty and garner their acceptance.

Embracing anything is primarily about taking ownership of what YOU want instead of what OTHER people think is right for you. This is difficult for women sometimes because of men who are rarely going to vote for the same things we choose for ourselves.

For sure. I have found that women are more critical of the decision to go gray than men have been.

You don’t talk about the cons and there are some. For one some industries will lay you off or not hire you. Period. I worked in an industry where women over 55 are layer off and not hired. So the few women in the industry enter new industries where they make much less money. I did t have many wrinkles but did light Botox (to remove my anger 11’s) and light filler. I did dye my hair but had moved to bright fashion colors. I was able to work until I was 63. I love dying my hair but I don’t use permanent pre Demi-perm hair dye. My semipermanent hair color is good for my hair and so much fun. And of course I stopped Botox and fillers when I stopped working…. I get that many women dye their hair for economic reasons.
