I’m a physician and I’ve been struggling to make sense of my dissatisfaction with my job for the last 6 years. I want to do more with the knowledge that I have. This video is so inspirational! I’ve been praying to find a way to travel and practice medicine at the same time. I’ve also wanted to teach people how to take care of themselves in a non-clinical setting that empowers them. I’ve had a few ideas on how to do this but have been afraid to try because as you said “who goes to medical school and then doesn’t practice medicine”. Your video has convinced me that all this fear I have should be “turned into faith”. Thank You for this video! I will be looking into your medics abroad opportunities also.

@@Elisa-Winstonbunbun Hello, I understand what you are trying to say about that expression being "hollow" However God does work in unexpected ways. God always goes deeper than appearance, tradition and/or position. In fact,in the book of Isaiah, He declares that His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. God will reveal things to us, yes! But the way(s) He choose to work it out is definitely up to Him and not the way(s) we expect.

I think it's good that you are trying different things, but I would recommend that you go ahead and get board-certified in some sort of specialty before leaving the clinical setting completely, if you haven't done so already. Having a board certification (or being a Facharzt, as it's called in German-speaking lands) can open a lot of doors in clinical, academic and in the private sector. I have also worked in different countries and in corporate settings and what mattered most in getting these opportunities was the qualification as a specialist as well as language skills (also certified).

I am on my own journey of becoming a Medical Doctor, but I too have this passion to provide medical services and support to people who don’t have the advantages of living in a first world country. I am originally from South Africa and I have moved to the UK in February 2019. I hope when I eventually become a Doctor, I too will be able to participate in programs or companies that contribute to people on a larger scale than individual patient care (of course individual patient care is also a priority and equally necessary) but I want to do more and as much as possible to improve as many people’s lives as possible, especially less fortunate communities. So I truly do look up to you for inspiration. This world needs people like you so thank you for everything that you already do 🙂💯👏‼️

She is my age mate. She inspires me, she speaks substance. She is one of the very few people I follow on social media, infact I've followed her for years. She communicates openly, speaks her truth and she's very honest with herself, she holds her self accountable. I can relate to and with her, she is keeps growing and yes I see that journey of personal growth in the way she thinks, the way she reasons and the way she makes and handles life changing decisions. For the first time in this video, I saw myself in her ( not because of the reasons below but they way she thinks, reasons and the personal growth that she's made). From this video, I saw a young lady that not afraid to fulfill her destiny. In the kind of world that we live in, Adana is daring not to be defined by her gender, marital status, her role as a mother, a wife or her Job as a doctor. Adana is saying, this is me I am human and despite all your expectations I'm gonna do me, I'm gonna do what makes me happy and im going to do it because I owe it to myself to make the best of my life. I saw a happy, successful woman who is brave, strong and daring to make the most of the opportunities that God has presented to her. Here is someone who has natured her passion of helping people and her love for travel and has brought about a completely new career. Here is someone who is making the best of the life that God has given her. It's just beautiful to watch someone grow so much over the years. Well done Adana keep doing what you do. Thank you for inspiring us.

I love my job but I felt like that there is more I could be doing to add to this world. People and family are mortified that I am stepping away from an incredible salary and networks I have built. But for years I have had a plan to create an educational business to drive education in Africa and have this feeling that all of us Africans living in the first world have a responsibility to Africa. I admire you and medics abroad is needed. I hope you extend it to Zambia. I commented on your insta to say how you looked alive in recent months. You have made the right decision we can all see the passion. I am waffling but I am here for this video. And feel a little emotional watching this I feel like you said what is going on in my life. This video struck a chord with me because I’m currently at a precipice - a moment in my life where I’m deciding if I really want to practice clinical (or hospital) medicine after graduating med school last June. I emailed you guys in October of 2014 when I was just a newly minted bright-eyed 3rd year medical student. The fire and passion were burning inside, and I lived and breathed medicine. I emailed you (Adanna to be exact) about looking for opportunities abroad via volunteering in hospitals around the world (esp in developing countries). I wanted to acquire as many skills and gain a ton of international experience as possible. I even flirted with the idea of shadowing Adanna, which I told her in my email. Anyways, since obtaining my MD last June, I’ve slowly but progressively started to make peace with the fact that I may not want to practice clinical medicine after all. This is so scary to admit as I’ve lived and breathed everything medicine for the most part of my adult life, while ignoring other aspects that make one a rounded individual. I’ve been studying intensely for the United States Medical Licensing Exams (USMLE), which have notoriety for how difficult they are especially Step 1, and as a foreign grad, with all the strikes against you, the pressure to score in the 99th percentile is overwhelming! I was fortunate to get the opportunity to go to the US immediately after graduating med school last summer for 3 months to shadow physicians and gain US clinical experience. While I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the team, learning from the attending physicians and residents alike, it didn’t take long for me to dread waking up every morning. Maybe it’s because I was shadowing in the PICU and CICU, or maybe it’s because I really don’t like Pediatrics as a specialty. I just knew that I wanted to be anywhere but the hospital. On returning to Nigeria at the end of the year, I decided to apply to Masters programs in Europe, and I was fortunate to have been accepted to most schools I applied to. I’m currently planning to leave come August and explore this opportunity and see if I’d like a career in the course I’ll be studying. It’s still within the medical realm, but I’m potentially looking to get into consulting. I’ll always love medicine and I haven’t totally closed the door on it. I’m just not ready to dip both feet in yet without seeing what else I may be interested in and find fulfillment in doing so. I’ll end with the email response from Adanna & David in October of 2014. “Hi Oluchi, Thank you so much for reaching out to us and for your detailed and enthusiastic description. I admire you urgent desire to learn and to do more, please never lose this. The best doctors are those who are and remain totally passionate about what they do, medicine is a lifestyle not just a course at university. In regards to placements and experience, I can only advise you to go out there and contact as many people, hospitals and organisations as possible. Everything I have done so far in the US, Ireland, Kenya and Germany was because I was very committed and persistent in my applications. Don't shy away from contacting hospitals or the secretaries from doctors directly. Compose a good CV and a cover letter and send them out to as many people as you can. Going through an organisation can be interesting but I have never done it, so I can give you very little advice on that. It's very sweet that you would like to shadow me but at the moment I can't do that, I am still very busy with my final year. But who knows, in the future and I am very interested in working with passionate young doctors :). I hope this was a little bit helpful. Most importantly Oluchi, never give up and just go for it, try things, don't feel something is too big for you or you won't get it anyway - just try it! Lots of love, Adanna & David”

I am happy that Medics Abroad is growing and that with it comes the opportunity to focus on your children and husband. I plan to transition into my businesses 100%. The one thing that has held me back (from jumping in completely and quitting my 9-5 job) has been medical coverage. As you know the US doesn't have state-wide health coverage. Medical expenses are ridiculous and is reason enough to stay at a job that we don't particularly enjoy. I pray that the US evolves and gets on the same page as Europe and Canada with medical care...Anyway, I'll continue to watch you on your journey. You inspire us!

Good for you, Adanna. Love that we get to see you pursue your passion and evolve from afar, as we each pursue our own journeys. And, I must've been away from KZbin for awhile because I didn't know you were loc'ed. You look absolutely beautiful!

Adanna, I don't know what you are doing but you are looking absolutely gorgeous. Love your natural hair and your makeup! So, whatever it is that you are doing - keep it up!! Now, about your decision to move on to another career all I have to say about that is that the Bible tells us that there is a time for all things. After listening to you I am convinced that God has a much broader plan for your life and the season for change is now. This is not to say that you will never again practice medicine but you must explore all of the options that God has allowed you to explore. So in closing with much enthusiasm I say WHEREVER God leads - YOU GO GIRL!!

As we say in NYC, "DO YOU!" It's YOUR journey, if not now, when? You are so lucky, most people live their whole lives missing out on LIFE. Fear keeps most people stuck. You are God favored, truly an inspiration, my inspiration!

I think it’s so cool how you’ve decided to follow entrepreneurship after medicine. Sometimes all the education you do isn’t to be a part of that system but to change it. That’s hands down one of the most powerful careers you can have. Good luck and God bless, I hope you can make some videos about the behind scenes of being an entrepreneur! I think a lot of people would be interested in that as well as myself! Stay blessed 💖💖

Oh my goodness Adanna. You are a shining star. I am so proud of you for embracing yourself and making difficult decisions. People go their whole lives without doing what you are doing now. You are facing your fears and living in the arena. Continue to embrace your self and you will see yourself rise higher and higher as a doctor and as a person. You are not disappointing anyone I am convinced. You are 100% doing the right thing and I know this will make you an even stronger doctor in the end. What an inspiration you are!

The hardest thing I had to do this year is admit to my self that I wasn't going to do clinical medicine, I went through the same thought process as yours, its hard to imagine going through med school and not practicing it. For more than two years now I knew what I wanted to do, deep deep deep in my heart but I just recently allowed myself to give in to what I am passionate about! Am so glad am not alone Adanna thank you for this video.

Girl I’m loving all the queen vibes of your appearance! Congrats on your endeavors. You’re making an amazing decision and paving the way for your sisters and brothers. Please do record the journey. I want to start my own company but I’m a little afraid. Everyday I’m inching closer and closer to the edge to leap. I would love your mentorship via KZbin videos and whatever else avenue you have. I’m not in medicine.... I’m more in prevention(personal trainer/nutrition). But it’s good to see someone of the same skin tone as you and a women rocking it. It makes up believe and do! Thank you sis! Thank you

Telling your self the truth can be very difficult, but in the end our heart keeps pulling us to that particular thing we can’t stop doing our finding ourselves do, it take a WHOLE LOT of SELF COURAGE to make up our mind to move on cos of FEAR and what people will say but we have to remember one thing that it’s not about what people think is about what we are fulfilled doing and happy with. What ever you choose to do, Do cos you got it.

Adanna, giving up sometimes means you're strong enough to let go to create bigger things. You are still in the field of medicin. What I admire about you is that, even through you are away from Africa, deep within you, you did have bigger plans for Africa. I don't know how I can support you, since I'm not in the field of medicine but you gave me an idea that you could have international students to train so what I will do is speaks about this to my students and gave them check out your site. You have a creative mind and there are bigger plans instore for you. I am so proud if you , even through you do not know me. Stay bless.
