I'm a teacher as well...my advice 1. Do not devote your life to teaching. 2. Have passions and hobbies outside of the classroom. 3. Do not try to save the world. It's not our responsibility 4. Do not take anything personally 5. When you leave work, go out and enjoy life. Just to name a few.

I empathize with your story. How America’s schools pass students on to the next grade when they are not even able to do the work at grade level is beyond me. Teachers in middle school should be expected to teach middle school material. They shouldn’t be attempting to teach that material while also remedying the fact that the students aren’t even prepared with prerequisites. Education in our country is becoming a disingenuous scam. The system itself is incompetent.

I taught English 3 years abroad in two countries and I loved it! I came back to the USA and taught in middle school and lasted only a year (in person) I now teach at an online academy and it is much better. I will never work in person at a school again.

My first five years of teaching, I taught in two great schools. They weren't perfect, but they were what was expected and they further enhanced my love of teaching. I moved to another state and needed a teaching position. I took the first one that was offered and it has been a sheer nightmare. Always do your research. We are asked as teachers to make sure our classrooms have a positive, nurturing, and productive environment....as we should. However, we teachers deserve a workplace that's the same.

First year teacher here. This has been the most difficult phase of my life so far.... As I'm watching this, it is the 6th night I have stayed up with absolutely no sleep. This is the second day after winter break too.... I do not feel recharged or refreshed. I feel drained and burned out and, above all, so disappointed in myself.... I worked so hard to be where I'm at, and it really does feel like this isn't for me, and that all the time and money I spent getting my teaching credential has gone to waste. I feel ready to leave by the end of the year, but it really does feel like I'm on a very high fence about this. And in my case, it's not the students.... It's the workplace environment, the amount of work I need to take home, otherwise I will never get it done, it's the hours, the unreasonable expectations, state testing, the amount of requirements (at least here in California), the lack of pay (yes, even in California)...just so many factors, most of which are systemic. I'm overwhelmed and confused and don't know what decision to make. Maybe a year off might help? Who knows....

You said that no one goes into teaching for money. But no one seem to get it. You need money to sustain your financial well-being. I believe teachers, especially in urban and rural communities, are the most underpaid profession in America, which is truly grievous. My argument to support my claim is that parents entrust their children's future performance and sustainability in the hands of educators and teachers (alike) to help grow their children intellectually, mentally and socially developed human being. ---------------- Teachers are worth the money and attention that's required for them to live a healthy and sustainable lifestyle that's well deserved for the amount of responsibilities and stress that educators and teachers undertake. ---------------- Shalom

@@herbertharris7316I agree and many of my colleagues while studying confessed that they were going into teaching for the salary and other benefits. I believe however, that while saying 'no-one goes in for money' is a bit of a stretch, it is really in support of teachers who are OK with sacrificing this salary, if desires are not being met in the other areas of the career path i.e some of what was mentioned in the video. There are also persons who believe that educators are not aloud to utter a word of complaint, because you are being paid what they believe is sufficient to deal with the myriad of challenges that come along. I hope to talk more about this in a future video. Thanks so much for commenting!

I have been in a program and had concrete plans to become an ELA teacher in Miami but after field work and seeing how far behind the kids are and the pay, I am switching my plans. As a NYC of many years, I found you hit many things well... Teaching is a beast that will take your inner soul... I always tell new teachers you have to decide now if this is what you want to do for the rest of your life... If not get out now... It will wear you down... So, you made the right decision for yourself... The one thing that should be at the bottom of the reasons, but is more important than you think, was the staff issues... Because you can't survive teaching without a supportive staff; especially the teachers; and especially in your first year... So, its importance is "not" so much because you had to deal with their negativity, but "is" more because you didn't get influenced by positivity...

I enjoyed your video especially. To me it is quite simple. It is not a good idea to teach anywhere where the kids will most likely make you look bad. Which translates into it’s not really a good idea to teach much of anywhere anymore the way it is today. There may be some exceptions as for instance I would consider tutoring GED equivalency diploma working with adults, and also I might consider teaching barbering also to adults, or perhaps even canoeing to people in general including kids being a former canoe tripping guide. But if the job is going to be an embarrassment to you then it’s not wise to bother.

U will have your opinion how this problem should be tackled, is it video then by this take out the cause of the trouble, by removing it, children will follow the cause of trouble maker, the sheep could be forced, frighten to go against the bully, at this rate class teaching is failing so fast , it comes down to two one get rid of the trouble to a more radical disapline teaching and keeping the more mild student this give the school and teacher a chance to survive in future.

You can still teach in many different ways, dear. Schools are failing because the way they are teaching is outdated. New methods need to be implemented, and curriculum needs to be interesting and challenging for students who are angry at the system. But, with your knowledge of producing videos etc. you can make a difference. Keep your videos wholesome and educational with the content you post, and never give up on your passions. Kids really do want to learn, but their needs aren't being met so they are rebelling. They are bored, and no one learns that way. Use your knowledge for good, no matter what it is you do and follow your dreams.
