The most based video of all Hollow Knight content is finally here made by yours truly. The Area Ranking has been something I wanted to make for a really long time now and I’m happy to finally show it to you all after working on it for so long. I’m not lying when I say this video took my entire soul when making it. So many hours went into the script writing, recording and of course editing, so any support you could give this video would be greatly appreciated :). My biggest and best video yet to end off 2023 with a banger (or start 2024 depending on where you live). This video literally took my entire soul. My entire November and December was basically just working on this video and with holidays and everything as well it was really hard to get all of this done in time. 4:25 I’m actually genuinely surprised at how hated Deepnest is. In my honest opinion, I love deepnest because it does exactly what it’s supposed to do. It throws you off, it creeps you out. Wouldn’t be deepnest, with no creepers, now would it? The lack of music, the ambience of the place, meeting nosk for the first time, getting beaten up by those people in the distant village, senseless tunnels with seemingly no meaning to them. It’s just awesome. I love it.

Not everyone likes having nightmares of spiders crawling over them. Fear has a negative connotation for a reason, and arachnophobia is the most common phobia. Put the two together, and no wonder people are going to react so erratically to this area. Poison is great at killing people, but I won't say I like it because "It does exactly what it's supposed to do". When something is great at doing something you don't like, chances are you're going to hate it more.

City of Tears might have to be my #1. The melancholy aesthetic is super calming and yet it can also get really chaotic. Both the major boss fights are great ones, and overall I just love the concept that it’s a forlorn City that’s lost its way.

I actually love deepnest. It has two of the most interesting enemy designs in the game (a spider coming out of the foreground and a beast that uses it's claws as a mask and a weapon? that's pretty cool in my opinion). I also find it does exactly what it's supposed to do: make you feel lost, claustrophobic, and uncomfortable. Possibly even plain scared if you're an arachnophobe (which I thankfully am not). The random drop into the hot spring after the extremely tight tunnel navigation is one of my most memorable experiences. All in all, a pretty solid area.

IMO Kingdoms edge hits the absolute hardest, I love the idea that hollownest all revolves around a singular kingdom. Leaving the player to think that the world is big and terrifying but also all unified by their affiliation with the City of Tears and the Pale King. This piece of worldbuilding really got me in love with the game. Also great vid, keep up the good work :)

honestly, my personal favorite contentwise is the white palace. I just love platforming, plus the lore is pretty insane. It was a really impactful area, both with the throne room and the ending of path of pain, at least for me. But I can get behind a lot of the places for areas in your ranking, honestly I can agree with most of them. My personal favorite is City of Tears, followed by Crystal Peak, then Greenpath. I also love Fungal Waste, Royal Waterways, and Ancient Basin. All 6 have great content/bossfights, but City of Tears, Crystal Peak, and Greenpath also have next level art, music, and atmosphere.

The hive blew my mind when i found it. Such a unique and vibrant area in a place on the map where i never ever expected to find something this beautiful. It just gives me a warm welcoming feeling (eventhough the bees arent very welcoming 😭) The sound design in this area is HEAVILY underrated, the bee noises, acoustics and hive knight boss theme are all amazing

The Hive is a lot higher up for me because the way that you discover it is something that truly scratched the perfect itch for me. It's a whole area that you can enter only one way, and that entrance is hidden behind a breakable wall that can easily be missed. But when you do discover it you're in for such a treat, because right when you least expect it you got a whole new area with a super distinct and unique aesthetic. This experience alone puts The Hive way higher on the list for me. It kind of entails exactly what a lot of Hollow Knight is about; exploring and finding hidden sectets.

Thank you for the video! I absolutely understand that all ranking is subjective (understood from the moment i was clicking on the video) so not going to argue, just share some subjectiveness too! First, i wouldn't place crystal peak so high if was asked. Party because "area where you accomplish some goals and never turn back" is about it exactly. Party because of enemies, that just don't feel.. so good as others. And maybe, just maybe, because it's art style, all lightened crystals without bright light, the sound of machinery and THE MUSIC just spreads sadness so strong... Not that kind of sweet and ascended sadness, but the one that chains your chest. However, few playthroughs later i probably will change my mind, who knows. Next... Hive. Yeah, there's not so much to do there, but it is just pleasing. Completely optional area, the only optional in the game as far as i remember (((well good luck in white palace without hiveblood when you're not great in parkour))) For me, no problems with background sound, it feels so different from the rest of game in terms of being really alive, another kingdom within borders of Hallownest, that (as seems) hasn't collapsed and still running... (Also somehow associations with childhood memories of Angry Birds Space, especially the Utopia levels, idk) Kingdom's edge. First entering was just a WOW moment, completely agree with what you said. But to add, if only you are familiar with sequel of Syberia, the very music Just Hits Different. (Also Wyrm, that's cool af) Ancient basin. Not much to say, I'll go with the crowd on this, it's "dark not grim" aesthetic that i love. Witnessing something beyond what we've seen before, seeing ruins of Palace, also the Broken Vessel which is sooo cool and has awesome soundtrack, aswell as still-partly Pale beginning of location that slowly changes to dark... And the dreamnail dialogue of king's servant in the beacon, that can be used as a sample of the location's vibe. Oh yeah, after bue-ish Forgotten Crossroads when you enter bright amd full of life Greenpath and the absolute masterpiece of a music starts playing and tou get first serious glimpses of all the mysteries awaiting... @@MilesNugget I mean, from my perspective obviously yes but it's a bit special it's a 2d platformer with a fully simulated ecosystem the movement is easy to learn and hard to master and it is a really hard game, especially the first few hours but I think when it comes to the map, it's even cooler and more immersive than hk it's also one of those games that doesn't tell you the story right away, but, like hk, has a lot of environmental storytelling and tidbits it's not a game that everyone will enjoy, but I certainly did (and still do, it still has so much content) that was my rambling about a game I like, if you need more, I'm happy to give

I got so excited when i saw the notification for a new miles video. The tier list was fire, but my only big disagreement was that royal waterways is the ABSOLUTE WORST AREA EVER, the only redeeming factor is dung boy and godhome, but you ranked that seperate so only one thing prevents it from being utter garbage. i think that fungal deserves the respect it got because the purple mushrooms kind of are the first experience with alot of pogos so it teaches the player pogo techniques

I am a big fan of the ambient factors of areas in hollow knight, as team cherry put so much work into making them interactive, ambient, and realistic to give you the best experience. So I agree with most of your rankings (I’m one of those 2 howling cliffs fans). Happy New Year!

I think the biggest waste to me is how underutilized Ancient Basin is, yeah there's a lot of important stuff for progression but there's just no unique level design and not even a unique music track it's just ambience, which is a shame because I love the visual aesthetic a lot for whatever reason and think something connected to both the Abyss and the White Palace should be somewhat more substantive to explore

I honestly really wanna share my own opinion too. It’s a really good feeling, so… Number #18: Howling Cliffs - really small area with no new enemies. You only come once and never ever see it again. Number #17: Royal Waterways - It is unique and has cool things, but I hate the atmosphere and ambience. My ears break when I hear a pink thingy chasing me. Number #16: Fog Canyon - Not many enemies and js almost always the same. The sub-location is absolutely incredible though, but it’s not enough. Number #15: The Hive - An area with nice detail and unique enemies, but it’s small, hard and annoying to get through. There is too much of the bees buzzing sound and you can’t relax even on a bench. After beating the hive knight, you leave and don’t come back there again. Number #14: Deepnest - I actually like the idea of deepnest, being a spooky scary skeleton area that is terrifying in every way: darkness, worms and spiders, mimics and other things. But the reason I ranked it this low is because it’s a big grow in difficulty, having almost no place to heal, millions of traps that come out of nowhere so most of the players will die a lot in there. Number #13: Ancient Basin - It really lacks the amount of enemies since in the real area, you only see one kind of them. The Broken Vessel is absolutely incredible, which makes it a bit higher than some locations, but there’s still not much content for it. Number #12: Forgotten Crossroads - It is pretty big and probably has the most things to do, so you’ll come there a lot of times. It’s great, but there’s one thing that lowers it, and that’s because of how underwhelming it is. The design and enemies are “meh” and some players might think that the whole game will be like this, so they quit, leave a review and never come back again. Number #11: Resting Grounds - A pretty small area with some things to do, like unlocking the second part of city of tears, getting the dream nail and definitely not killing dreamers without knowing the consequences. It is an area that is small and not very good, but you need to occasionally come back to this area for getting rewards, upgrading the dream nail or do the delicate flower quest for the millionth time, which saves the area. Number #10: The Abyss - The Shit of the lore. You just fall down from the Ancient Basin, and get to see from where have you escaped. Your siblings are here too, and you need to fight them. We all loved the moment where we were climbing on top and seeing the past. Number #9: White Palace - Very good and unique. It is your absolute challenge of movement and platforming skills. The design is epik and the parkour is pretty hard, yet not too hard. And it still manages to keep the metroidvanias’ function of coming back. You complete one area of parkour, you come back and go to another one. The only downside is that some players might rage while trying to complete it(especially Path of Pain) Number #8: Infected Crossroads - It’s honestly really cool seeing this area transforming from an easy tutorial level to a nightmare. It is cool how when you are skilled, even the easiest level evolves with you. Though I get really annoyed when these enemies *legalise nuclear bombs 💣* Number #7: Dirtmouth - This area is the smallest, yet still epic. You still need to visit it for bretta’s marks, sky’s shards and of course, GRIMMMMM!!!! AW MY GOOOOOD!!!!!! Number #6: Queen’s Gardens - A really cool area with many different enemies that fit the theme and a lot of platforming. It is like an easier version of the white palace. It’s also got a great boss that forces you to spam shade dash. But after you beat the traitor lord and get the love key, you don’t have anything to do there. Number #5: Fungal Wastes - I like 3 design choices for areas in any game: grass-y, mushroom-y and crystall-y. And that’s one of them. I find fungal wastes very cool, with unique enemies, a lot of content and of course, the mantis village. Probably the best sub-location of the game with one of the best bossfights. You have many things to do there - getting mantis claw, beating mantis lords, exploring the fungal core or scream at the stupid guy to give back your money. I think that it’s a great location. Number #4 - Kingdom’s Edge - I believe that this is the most amazing detail of hollow knight. It has a lot of white roots and leaves, and it’s layout is also cool, needing you to parkour while primal aspids are shooting with an infection shotgun. Also, my favourite enemy is in this area, and that’s the boofly(yes I like them more than grubs). They’re so cute and large! They are like flying cows: calm, peaceful and happy. It also has the colloseum of fools, which is a nice skill training area. Zote is also there! So yeah, this is a very nice area. But there’s something even better… Number #3: Crystal Peak - Remember when I told you about 3 design choices I like! Crystals are one of them. This area has an epic design, many rewards and challenges, unique enemies and a ton of sub-locations. It also challenges your parkour once more, having tons of things to use crystal heart in. It also has a lot of machinery and definitely feels like a factory. Number #2: Greenpath - Complete opposite of the Forgotten Crossroads, this location shows what Hollow Knight really is. Epic design, cool enemies, many sub-areas and a total of 4 bosses, 1 being a masterpiece, 1 being easier than walking, 1 eating zote and 1 being a horrifying nightmare. It has plenty of things to do an is amazing as the second area. Number #1: City of Tears - This area is the biggest area in the game being so big that it has 2 stations! It has so many quests to do: Beat the Watcher Knights, collect the desolate dive, enter the Ancient Basin or Royal Waterways, farm geo, sell religions and much more. It has tons of sub-locations, and the Soul Master is a literal goat. And I think just like most players, that this area is the best one because it is a big change for players to get locked in and try to survive meanwhile completing missions. 6:38 I am absolutely gobble-smacked that The Hive is all the way down here. Howling Cliffs? Justified. Deepnest? Justified. THE HIVE??? BELOW THE ROYAL WATERWAYS??? The Hive is a very short area, sure, and the big boy bee can be kinda annoying, but in my opinion, it is one of the most interesting and visually pleasing areas in the game. A low ranking makes sense, but being right up there with howling cliffs and deepnest is insane

@@MilesNugget Royal Waterways is a pretty large and has a lot of neat bits and pieces, especially Isma's Grove imo, but the flukes, sounds, and the atmosphere just give me the heebie-jeebies and I *despise* it i only really like the hive more because of the visuals and backgrounds, as well as the concept itself. I just have a bigger interest in the environment than the gameplay, is all. still, very good video!

I actually really liked howling cliffs. I've only played through the game once, so when i first found out there was a secret area in kings pass that leads to a new area, it was pretty cool. Yeah, theres nothing to do there, but i found it cool on my first and only playthrough
