The guy who played Knightley in the new Emma movie (Johnny Flynn) is the same age as Knightley, 37 years - I love that people think he is too young, but he is actually the exact same age

@@KatsLifestyle yeah something that I hate from other adaptations (except 1996) that Knightley is really dislikeable. I mean Emma 2020 is "dislikable" but at least it was supposed to be like that, but Knightley being so dislikable is just a NO for me, also Emma has a lot of chemistry with him in this adaptation.

The new 2020 Emma is my absolute favorite Jane Austen adaption of all! This Knightley is my fave too. He’s exactly the age as well I thought? He’s 37. I think the comedic timing was so on point and clever. Felt like Austen wrote the screenplay herself

Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle’s Pride and Prejudice, Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones Persuasion, Felicity Jones and JJ Feild’s Northanger Abbey and Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant’s Sense and Sensibility. Unfortunately Colin Firth was just SO dreamy as Mr Darcy that Matthew Macfadyen couldn’t live up to that role for me. I also watched the latest film adaptation of Emma and I simply could not bring myself to finish it. I wasn’t impressed by it at all and much prefer the Mark Strong and Kate Beckinsale variant. Theo James in Sanditon, LOVE!

1995 “Persuasion” in which Ciarnan Hinds WAS Wentworth and Emma Root WAS Anne! 1980 miniseries “Pride & Prejudice” in which Elizabeth Garvie IS and will always BE my Elizabeth Bennett! In fact, it is really too bad that a biography of Jane Austen was not done then, as Ms. Garvie would have been the Perfect Jane!

How did you not like the Lizzie Bennet Diaries?!!! I loved the way it was shot and the cast completely blew my mind for an early KZbin show. It was suspenseful waiting week by week to see what happened even though we all already knew. And the wait to see everyone was the best part! The minute we were given Bing Lee and wickham and By the Lord Darcy. It was soooo much fun! 😞

I just can't agree with you on the 2020 Emma or the BBC P&P, sorry. I understand your opinions, but honestly I think those two were cast incredibly well. That P&P is truest to the book and I felt the emotion was played really well. I think some people were disappointed by not seeing as much affection between couples, but you just wouldn't have behaved like that in the Regency era. Also I find the other characters like Mr Collins, Mrs Bennet, Mr Bennett and Mrs Gardener hilarious. As for Emma 2020 I think it's great to see a protagonist that you actually question. She doesn't appear perfect and always correct, she is often clearly in the wrong and dislikable, but that makes her relationship with Me Knightly and attempts to make up for her behaviour even more endearing :)

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I really don't like Pride&Prejudice 2005. Too many things different from the book, also Matthew Macfadyen wasn't totally convincing as Mr. Darcy to me. The 1995 tv show is a much better adaptation, the cast is on point and the attention to details is beautiful. I also like the new Emma, even though the dynamics between certain characters aren't totally true to the ones in the book.

It doesn't even belong on a list. Period. The overall movie was a dreary, dingy, sloppy, unappealingly dressed group of people who looked like they never bathed and you could almost smell them as you watched. 🤪 And we won't even bother to mention the whole hearted destruction of our Lizzie. Ok, I love the newer Pride and Prejudice film but come on best costumes?? Lizzie looks like an absolute mess all the time, her hair is a disaster and she wears a mans coat.. Personally the costumes ruined the film for me. Also it just doesn't feel like a good adaptation compared to the BBC version because they cut out soooo many of the scenes from the book. I will admit the music and filming locations are impossible to beat, but it just feels so rushed every time I watch it.

Okay.... your number 1 choice makes it SO clear that we do not have the same tastes in Jane Austen adaptations, like AT ALL 😂🤣😂 Okay, I don't exactly HATE it, but yeah... when you have the option of the, in my view, FAR superior 1995 series I just never feel like settling for the movie version. To be fair, the same is true of Sense and Sensibility, even if Allan Rickman and his voice HAS caused me to see that movie WAY more than I will ever watch the Pride and Prejudice movie. I tend to prefer the mini series as they can go far more into the story, and don't have to cut too much, which gives you a more full experience of the story.

A theatre in Portland, Oregon (Portland Center Stage) is doing Christmas at Pemberly (a sequel to P&P) for the second time this holiday season. I highly recommend (if you are able to) traveling down to Portland to see it. It’s hilarious, lovely, and just a grand old time. The theatre is also right next to Powell’s Books 🤗😊

Johnny Flynn is 13 years older than Anna Joy Taylor and was 37 when Emma was released in the US… he was exactly the age of Knightley in the book (but I fully admit I like him in the role because he “reads” younger and I find the knightley-Emma relationship totally unequal In the book). This is my favorite Emma. I despise the Gwyneth Paltrow Emma. I don’t think Romola Garai makes a good Emma. I love the secondary characters though.

Pride & Prejudice 2005 is definitely the best one, I really like the new Emma I felt like they tried to do something different but keeping that Austen feel to it, I never connected with Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma but I can appreciate the movie, the new Mr Knightley is much better in my opinion and the actor is actually the age Knightley is supposed to be, I wanted to watch Sanditon but I heard a lot of conflicting reviews, maybe after hearing you talk about it I'll finally give it a try

I agree with all your choices....awesome!!! You're so right about the Colin Firth version of p and p. Death comes to Pemberly...the best. I loved it, but you're right about the casting. A fellow masterpiece old-lady wanna be here!!!! I watch the Keira Knightly version of P and P at least twice a year...and especially when I'm feeling sad and need a pick me up....that hand flex. It's everything. Thank you for the video!!! I felt like I just had a chat with girlfriend. 😀

I am not going to rank all the adaptions right now, as I'd really need to think about it, but I will try a top 5: 1)Pride and Prejudice 2005 2)Emma 2009 3)Sense and Sensibility 2008 4)Pride and Prejudice 1995 5)Northanger Abbey(kind of weird for top 5, but I really like NA and there's so few adaptions of it and I really liked the 2007 movie) I think this tale is type for a dramatic film version spiced up a bit to make it more weighty - there's plenty in the story to work with. OKaay, that was hard. 6 would be Emma 2020 or 1995 Sense and Sensibility.

Anna Maxwell Martin and Matthew Rhys are stunning actors though, but I agree they aren't really Lizzie and Darcy. Matthew Rhys is amazing in The Americans, where he acts next to Kerry Rusell. I can't think of one thing to recommend Martin for, as she's been in so many British dramas. She played Cassandra in Becoming Jane, actually. If you're really going to rank ALL the adaptions though, the 1980 Pride and Prejudice is eaily available, and the 1983 Mansfield Park. And I think you missed the 96/97 UK tv move adaption of Emma starring Kate Beckinsale. There's other adaptions but there aren't as easy to come across.

I agree on the new Emma being just too ridiculous (funny and love the aesthetics) but it doesn’t have the romance or sexual tension, for me. I also love the best, Mr. Knightley from the 1995 version. I like P&P from 2005 as a movie but, like you said it’s all about the casting and I just can’t feel Keira Knightley as Elizabeth. Honestly I can’t say I’ve found my favorite Mr. Darcy yet (Colin Firth is closest for me), maybe they should go ahead and cast Theo James! He could be it for me. It’s hard to choose a favorite but I do love the 1999 Mansfield Park, the Emma series from BBC, and the S & S from BBC in 2008.❤️

When it comes to "Pride and Prejudice" I really think what you've grown up with and what you saw first is the version you prefer. I like the movie, but growing up with the BBC series, it will always be my favourite. It's always interesting to see which version true Jane Austen fans loves the most. But other than that I pretty much agree with EVERYTHING on this list. The TV show version of Emma truly did the character justice! Emma can be a hard character to love, but I think the TV show did her justice.

A couple more you might want to include is the Kate Becksindale Emma from the mid 1990s. There was a Northanger Abbey from the late 1980s with reasonably decent production values. The best Mansfield Park is from the 1980s. The production values aren't the greatest, but it is truer to the novel than the others. You might also want to watch the 1980s Pride and Prejudice with Elizabeth Garvie.

Johnny Flynn and Anya Taylor Joy were actually the exact ages of Emma and Knightly. He isn't young. He's 37. And he is in fact a "daddy” - he has 3 kids. Lady Susan wasn't a novella, it's an epistolary novel and it was finished, just not published in Austen's lifetime. It was published after her death. And the 1995 sense and sensibility won the academy award for best adapted screenplay. Oh and the actor who plays your favourite Knightly in the 1996 Emma is Jeremy Northam. Also can't look at Theo James without seeing him with shit on his nose in the inbetweeners movie.

I dunno, I thought Knightly looked plenty old in the new Emma... he's in his 30s in the book, how old do you think a 30-something is supposed to look??? I think you're imagining a 45-year-old but that's wrong too. I agree that their chemistry wasn't quite there, and the comedy beats didn't always hit right (more awkward/cringe humor that was sometimes too tedious). I love Bill Nighy as her dad, though, in the 2020 Emma.

YESSS I have been to the Jane Austen Festival in Bath!! If you want to go you should! It’s honestly as amazing as it looks. I was studying abroad in London in 2014 and only could make it for 1 day but it was incredible getting dressed up and parading around the city with everyone else all in costume. The best part of the day was randomly meeting Adrian Lukis and getting a photo with him while I was in costume 😭 (BBC P&P Mr. Wickham). Apparently he’s a patron of the festival haha I am hoping to go again in 2021 but for the full 10 days with my mom. Maybe I’ll see you there! ☺️ (but girl BBC P&P is god tier and I have read P&P)

Totally agree on the new Emma, was really disappointed and what’s with the stupid nosebleed bit? It’s not quite Anne running through the streets of Bath bad, but 2nd in my list of crap scenes in adaptations. The two Persuasions are top and bottom of my list of adaptations. Love the Root/Hinds 95 version, hate the 2007 version.

I loved 2020 Emma, I mean it doesn't really touch the 2009 Emma for me, it's the longest Emma adaption out there so you really spend time with the story.- but I think there is room for variety with adaptions, and this was a very whimsical, comedic adaption. We've had the more traditional take on the story before, so why not something different? It's a faithful adaption, it just takes on a different tone. Visually it's amazing obvs. I didn't really like Sanditon. To me there was nothing special in it, but it was alright.

Nailed it! Totally agree with all of your assessment. EXCEPT Sanditon Because they (MPC) ended the series with Austin's main character fleeing home in tears, in a way that JA would never have approved of.... I would have ranked lower out of spite! End it properly and then put it back at #2 (Bring Theo back!) No one should watch this until they write a proper ending

Awww, Bride and Prejudice doesn't get an honorable mention? It really is my favorite Pride and Prejudice adaptation and the first one I really saw and enjoyed when I was younger cause a younger me found the 2005 one boring. I didn't learn to appreciate it until I was older, but Bride and Prejudice is way more fun to watch. I watched it with my sister who doesn't even care for Jane Austen nor Bollywood movies and she loved it.

Death comes to pemberley was the worst Jane Austin want to be EVER! so stupid. They took away all the things I loved about Elizabeth. She lost all her spunk and they made her a weak minded whiner. Uck I hated this movie and Sandelton (?).

Sanditon is a colossal waste of time. Do not watch it. It’s not an accurate adaptation. If you’re ranking Jane Austen adaptations, you have to consider accuracy to the time period and novel. Many of your top choices fall flat. This list is misleading because it’s more about your taste, not about what makes a quality and worthwhile adaptation.

I feel like Mansfield Park can't be made into a movie well at all. Like it's hard to cram the whole story into 2 hours. I found myself pausing a lot to figure out what the fuck just happened with the movie.
