Hi Cuiv, i'm not in business since 14 years like you, but i've been doing the same stuff: Assembling all sorts of telescopes and cameras with all sorts of adapters, including custom mades, and sometimes even sanding them down on the grip tape of my old skateboard. Most of the time, after all the work was done, i disassembled my work shortly after, because i needed some parts for the next project.

I’m a hobby photographer with several telephoto lenses, and I was on the lookout to purchase a large Newtonian or SCT for really deep sky astro photography. This video has had me reconsider my purchase priority, and I might save money to spend the big bucks on a longer telephoto lens, that can serve me for other types of photography. Cuiv the filter wheel that you had to grind adaptors for is a Starlight Xpress. I have two of them, so recognized it right away. It was a good solution by the way, I've seen someone take the grinder to the LENS itself to get them more backfocus! I've had the Geoptic lens adapter and hated it. It always seemed like it was just barely able to hold the weight and never felt secure or solid. The Samyang 135 lens seemed to create massive star halos for me when I tried using it at F2. You'll laugh, but a 1970s vintage Pentax F2.5 seemed better in just about every way aside for less aperture. Regardless it's impressive you got all these lenses to work well. And as for the dragonfly array you mentioned they are using the 400mm 2.8 lenses, and they supposedly picked them exclusively for the coatings. Their research paper states that no mirror based telescope could achieve the low level of light scatter that these lenses do. Thanks for a fascinating video. And that M45 shot from Tokyo was outstanding.

My favourite scope is my little 5 inch Maksutov for sure. I've had since May 15, and have had to clean it a few times. Despite this the collimation is still perfect. It can do everything from Solar to DSO. But i mostly love it for Jupiter, my favourite target. Coupled with an ASI 224MC. Initially, a 1034MC which is a great little camera for just over £100. It's discontinued now but i managed to grab a 2nd model with a guide port. I was recently gifted a Sharpstar 130 F2.8 which is a beauty. Not had a good chance to do DSOs with it yet, but going how the full Moon looked a few weeks back. Gonna buy some Baader film for it. Not stricly a scope but i love to do all sky imaging too. Meteor showers mainly, and i haven't totally given up hope on some aurora one day. I have 2 setups, an Ultrastar-C and the 224. Both using the ZWO lenses.

26:36 my favorite lens of all times is my Nikon 300mm f2.8 AF-S II. Two reasons why I fell in love: 1) the quality; I mean, look at the MTF.. 2) it accepts 52mm drop in filters.. And yes, IDAS mounted filters do fit ! However, like you.. I always had to stop it down a little, f3.2 to improve some aberrations; it also depends of your sensor pixel size. On my D850 I always thought the lens was perfect (45MP); on my A7RIV (62MP) well.. I am starting to see things. An interesting thing about teleconverters: they litteraly crop a part of your image circle, so actually using a 1.4x or 1.7x (thanks nikon) ironically can improve the image corner to corner. I would be very curious to see how the canon compares to the nikon version; but indeed I will probably never sell that lens.. unless I have the money one day to buy a 100-300mm f2.8.. I've heard the quality is as good, and then you can frame so many different targets !

My favorite and most used scope is one of the cheapest Newtonian astrographs out there, that nobody (seemed to) use. 150mm F4- F3 with Starizona CC corrector. The 2 together cost about $1000 (the Starizona Nexus is nearly $500) not counting for the focuser upgrade and the EAF. Once you get bitten by the focal speed bug, it's very hard to go back to the typical and slow refractors.

Many people say - oh, if you are beginner, get the short focal length while forgetting that beginners first bucket list targets are Mars, Jupiter and Saturn😊. 27:22 I also have the 300mm f4 (nikon) and as the 300mm f2.8, it is also a great lens. However don't regret too much not going for the f4 version.. as essentially you also have to stop it down a little to get good images.. so yes the 2.8 is bigger.. but you get 1 full stop of light for the same performance (eg for the 300mm f2.8 at f4, you would need to close the 300mm f4 at f5.6)

20:25 Cuiv: simpsons-chuckles-i'm-in-danger.gif I'm about to try my first real telescope (the Svbony SV550) after years of lenses, AND jumping into full mono. This will be yet another learning curve, arguably a steep one given I'm changing two things instead of one. But we're more lazy than easily frustrated, right? And yes, totally go for the Roki 135 if you have a spare camera lying around. With a harmonic mount it would be trivial to piggy-back it off the C6 for maximum laziness. Or something really wide-field, given it's Milky Way season now. We all started astrophotography from either seeing Saturn's rings or the Milky Way stretching across a B3 sky with just our eyes; I find seeing those again rejuvenating in terms of my interest and drive in this crazy hobby of ours.

I've got a 15yr old R200SS which one of its previous owners installed Bob's Knobs on. I think that was a mistake because it certainly needs collimating. Therefore, I go between hating it (when I discover collimation was off) and really loving it, when things go right. I'm constantly tempted to get a brand new one. In terms of the light leaks, I've discovered a shower cap works well on the back, and stays on because of the elastic, and a large Scotch Tape cardboard roll is just right size to sort the leak on the focuser.
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek Жыл бұрын
Yeah Bob's knob are convenient, but usually aren't tightened enough to actually hold collimation... I view them as counterproductive
@RobertKarlBerta
@RobertKarlBerta Жыл бұрын
@@CuivTheLazyGeek Can't agree with your on Bob's Knobs. I have two 11" SCTS, 1-14" SCT HD, and one 8" SCT HD with them in my observatory. They are so much easier to use than the stock screws. I colimate my scopes quite often and since I do it with the camera attached it is very easy and fast to do....and the results of a REALLY well collimated SCT are quite dramatic. I also use Hyperstar and the newer versions with the collimationg screws on the Hyperstar and internal filter drawer are wonderful. I have used Hyperstar and Fastar before that....I was one of the earliest users of the Fastar (remember those ST237 cameras?) and did some beta testing of it for Celestron and later Starizona.....they are capable of excellent results and the speed of capture is a benefit. That being said I mainly use APO refractors between 80mm and 152mm focal lengths. There is someting about the images a really good APO yields.
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek Жыл бұрын
@@RobertKarlBerta oh I don't deny that Bob's Knobs make collimation easier and less painful. I remember really liking them on my EdgeHD800... At first. But the problem was that with Bob's Knobs I had to recollimate quite often - whereas once I went back to the horrible Philips screws (how I wish they were hex screws), the collimation was a pain (not that horrible though)... But it lasted for months on end. I saw the exact same thing with a Meade SCT I had rescued that came with Bob's Knobs (I ended up replacing them with normal hex screws). So it's the choice between a simpler process I need to redo very often (and which I find a pain regardless, especially with the poor seeing caused by the permanent jet stream overhead), or a more painful process that I can leave alone for months and months - I much prefer the latter. When I got a C9.25 for (mostly) visual, I didn't get Bob's Knobs for that reason. Seems a lot of people on CN have seen the same (and some also see Bob's Knobs hold collimation well, so there are counter examples). If Bob's Knobs had an Allen screw indentation at the center (mine didn't), I feel they'd be perfect! Maybe they've added that feature since I used them? In the meantime, I'd rather recommend wingnut versions of the knobs, or simply replacing the Celestron Philips collimation screws with Allen screws (which to some extent can actually be used just like Bob's Knobs if you choose a right head size!)

As always, I like your videos. One thing however that is missing (I may have missed) in the type of sensor you were using. Both the pixel size and the format (APS-C, full frame, etc) impacts so much. I have tried recently the canon 200mm f2.8 as everyone was saying so many great things about it. For me, it was a ok lens; aberations were enormous mid frame to corner (on full frame). If used on APS-C or smaller sensor, then I could understand why one would like this lens. Similar question for the kowa. Didn't know that lens, so now I am intrigues.. but was it good on a FF ? and... what was your sensor pixel size at the time ? No C6 RASA, and overall cheaper (especially in Japan with Vixen gouging the prices since they've become the Celestron dealer here)

Canon is 55mm If you are in Japan why don't you use a Takahashi??
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek Жыл бұрын
No it seems to indeed be 44mm flange distance (EF mount), if it had been 55mm I wouldn't have had all these issues reaching focus at infinity! As I understand it, Takahashi accessories and adapters are necessary and expensive, and that has always turned me off

Too bad you don’t have the 9.25 edge anymore, adding a Hyperstar v4 you’d have 540mm and f2, no need for the new newt at ~500mm and f4.5. Oh well, 20-20 hind sight.

Yes indeed - although the newt is F3.5, the advantage is I can use normal narrowband filters! :D

Really enjoyed this, thank you! In the Hyperstar section you explicitly mentioned that superfast focal ratio is really great for Tokyo. A quick search for materials on using different F-ratios in light polluted areas for astrophoto specifically revealed a spectrum of discussions, including those that seem to claim lower ratios are somehow better. Do you think you could maybe elaborate a bit on this and share your educated opinion? I can see how if we fix the EFL, then faster optics will have a bigger aperture that collects more light, letting one expose for less time to get the same amount of signal. The obvious advantage here is that you wouldn't need to track as accurately, which has nothing to do with light pollution. Will that signal have a higher SNR though?

Oh man that's a topic for a loooong video, which I've covered in the past, and is fraught with debate and controversy. The end result is: for a given FOV (which fixes the FL assuming same sensor) you will gather SNR faster with a larger aperture (which means a faster FR in this instance).

I have a re-branded version of the 70ED from Altair, purchased second-hand very inexpensively. I haven't tried it for photography yet but I'm actually really impressed with it for widefield visual work and it feels like a high-quality scope. You get better results from it that I would, that's for sure!

I'm actually seriously considering getting an R200SS + PH Corrector again. Or maybe the cheap variety with the Skywatcher Quattro.
