Sanremo is not the National selection for the Eurovision, it is the Italian music festival . The winner might be selected to also go to the Eurovision but that is not automatic and they might refuse . Sanremo is actually the event from which the Euro contest took inspiration from, not the contrary .

Two things can be true at the same time. Since the sanremo winner can have the opportuinity to go to Eurovision it can be called a National Selection since that is what it is. It more importantly the Italian music festival but that is kind of irrelevant in the context of Eurovision. At the end of the day, sanremo is the festival that is going to select the Eurovision entry, whether that is the winner of sanremo or not.

@@oxcaxx I think you miss the point. The thing is that San Remo doesn't promote ESC at all. ESC is never mentioned (exception this year, because Maneskin were special guests), songs MUST be in italian, everything must be live, there is an orchestra, no 3 minutes limits, very little staging infrastructure, a moderate swearing in the lyrics is ok, all the songs must be new, and so on. Having rules so different, you can understand that there isn't ESC in mind when it comes to compete in San Remo. RAI decided to use it to select italian song for ESC because there was no point in organizing another contest, that's it. All of this makes a huge difference with other countries that selects songs prepared for ESC.

Sanremo is NOT a selection contest for Eurovision, It is a pop festival with 72 years of history. Nobody partecipate to Sanremo for the Eurovision contest, even if the Sanremo winner gets the right to represent Italy at Eurocontest. In the past happened that several Sanremo winners gave up to go to Eurovision contest. Sanremo is by far more prestigeous than Eurocontest, even if Eurocontest is watched worldwide.

Can we admit that many Italians discovered the existence of Eurovision only when Maneskin won? My family (from 20 to 84 years old) has never seen or heard of Eurovision. I think it is more famous in other European countries. It is not an event that Italians follow en masse, only a few see it. This year I will see it for the first time (and I'm young, like me many others have never seen it). We traditionally have Sanremo known by every single Italian since the 50s.

Few thoughts and fun facts: 1) The clips were too short to fully get a grasp of what songs are good and what aren't. Mahmood&Blanco, Elisa, La Rappresentante di Lista are currently the favourites 2) Farfalle IS a kind of pasta! It means butterflies though :) 3) La rappresentante di lista have SO MANY great songs, they are a bit indie and not as popular as they should be but I think you'd like Resistere, Questo Corpo, Siamo Ospiti 4) "Ch" in Italian is pronounced "K". So "akille" and "kimica" 5) Noemi's song was written by Mahmood 6) In the videoclip of "Brividi" we can see Mahmood being intimate with another man for the first time 7) Emma's entry has the orchestra being led by Francesca Michielin, who was a contestant at Eurovision a few years back 8) Blanco is the youngest contestant this year at 18 y.o., Iva Zanicchi the oldest at 82, she has been at Sanremo 11 times and won 3 times. 9) Michele Bravi accidentally killed a person in a car accident a few years ago, and this is the first song and public appearance ever since.

CH in Italian is like K, so Achille is pronounced like Akille 😅 and also Chimica is pronounced like Kimika. I know that it might sound hard for a non Italian person! I wouldn't call Sanremo the "national selection for eurovision"...it's a bit more than that lol Sanremo predates ESC and Eurovision was actually inspired by it. The winner of Sanremo is then offered the chance to represent Italy at ESC but they can refuse, it's like an optional prize. The fact that Italy does so good usually is due to the fact that Sanremo's purpose is to select the best of the best of Italian music, Eurovision isn't really a relevant variable of the process.

Let’s be honest here, Ana Mena doesn’t stand a chance to win. Sanremo is the festival of Italian music and none is really focused on how much “Eurovision-y” the tunes are. So many people already told you but Sanremo is not the selection for ESC. It was born ages before. In fact in Italy ESC it’s not so important and few people watch it. And about the winner ESC propose them (in this case and last year case) to represent Italy but the could refuse. Blanco is on tour (and at the moment is confirmed) in the esc days. The juries gave her the 12th spot on Tuesday but I thought she deserved a higher spot, not 4 but higher than 12 lol.
