It was my understanding reading A Study in Drowning that the group Preston belonged to was NOT an oppressed group, they're just both from countries that have often been at war and so are prejudiced against each other. The country Effy is from is based on Wales and the country Preston is from based on England, England is definitely the oppressor of all oppressors. She mostly hated him at first cause she felt he was culturally appropriating from her country
