Thanks for the video, I agree with you for the most part. I read both Morrissey’s and Marr’s autobiographies last month and they are so different, their points of view are different, with Morrissey being mostly negative about things while Marr concentrates on positive aspects when they write about living in Manchester for example or their time in the Smiths. I loved Morrissey’s writing style, but he seems to be complaining about how people were mistreating him half the book and he sounds very bitter. And I kinda expected that, so I was not that disappointed. What was disappointing for me is that he barely talks about the process of creating his songs, the stories behind them, which Marr does in his book btw.

The fact that he only let this book come out if it was under the "Penguin Classics" range says a lot about him. I was given this book as a present. I got about one third the way through it and gave up, I can't even remember anything that I even read except for some ghost story that was vaguely intriguing. Johnny Marr's book, on the other hand, is a total delight.

In his solo career he always creates vanity labels within the majors - they're usually revivals of defunct sub-labels - so the branding of the book (which was soon reprinted as part of the Penguin Modern Classics series) is just more of the same. Apprecaite your comments on this but the Morrissey loyalists generally loved it (myself included), agreed that the smiths was too brief and we would of liked to have had a bit more about the stories of being on the road touring and recording. BUT we did expect it to be idiosyncratic, and im so glad he wrote it like that because its true to form. The audio book read by David Morrissey is very good too. And on the racism point, love him or loate him he doesnt feel like he needs to explain himself and I dont think he does either, that did upset a few alternative music journalists but he's being true himself again, he wont be bullied (Noel Gallagher put it best when he said why shoukd he defend himself). Not saying its perfect, but thats who he is, I could talk about his recent collaboration with Velma Houston and sell out show in tokyo last year to substantiate my point but its tiresome, or even the tributes he pays to famous anti-racist activist and scholar james baldwin (literally in the book which you might not have picked up on). Finally, we did expect more emphasis to be put on his solo career because he's been a solo artist for much longer and had more commercial successes (until very recently where the smiths became a top 50 spotify artist) but on releases moz has had more number 1s as a solo musician, sold more tickets etc and we know hes very proud of his solo work.

You are of course entitled to your opinion. The whole point of an autobiography is to document what was important to the person. Most people who are a fan of Morrissey or just want to learn more about him would be super interested to know what movies impacted him as a child. When I read this book years ago, I found it fascinating to peek into his childhood through what art touched him. It is apparent that actors like James Dean had a huge influence on him. It’s evident in his lyrics. You mention that he doesn’t write about his influences, which I think is just incorrect. He does not verbatim say “I was influenced by ______.” What he does do, is mention many artists that he listened to and what was going on in the scene around him while he was coming up. This book introduced me to a lot of great music I had never listened to before: My Cherry is in Sherry - Ludus 6060-842 - B-52’s How I Wrote Elastic Man - The Fall He would not write about these artists and songs if they did not have some importance to him. Part of me wonders if you even read the book? Because he also writes about countless other artists. Maybe you missed it because he didn’t explicitly state that he was inspired by them (Morrissey is probably too full of himself to admit any direct inspiration, haha)? He writes all about Bowie, Marc Bolan of T. Rex, The New York Dolls (who he was absolutely obsessed with), and he talks about attending some of Sex Pistols early auditions/shows/rehearsals with Siouxsie Sioux. He sets the stage for his life by talking about what and who was around him as he was growing up, and he writes about music he loved. Sorry, your review of this book perplexes me. If you’re not a fan of Morrissey just say that. We don’t care that ‘you don’t care’ about the movies he watched growing up.

I love The Smiths and Morrissey's music, but that book cover's so jarring to me. I like a lot of the music when he was in The Smiths, and not so much as a solo performer because, though his poetry is still very good, the music is not. Aside from that, welcome to the World of Morrissey: High expectations that yield miserable results. It's not incompetence, but by design. The man is gay and in life long denial. He also seems to have great disdain for others, especially the 3 others in his former band. A diva whose face hasn't been punched because he has fame and money.... and that buys a lot of tolerance in this country. Notice how he lives in California, not in England since the breakup of The Smiths in the late 80s. The English people are not fooled by the BS this terribly mentally diseased man spews, and WILL call it out. Oh, whatever.

You complain incessantly that Morrissey doesn’t explain how he wrote the lyrics to the songs…. You further say that he “rambles on” about books he has read, films he has seen, and general impressions he has collected from his youth. Has it not occurred to you that the answer to your insipid question about inspiration was given to you in the aforementioned form? Every book that he has read and every film he has watched added a small piece to who the man is, what his art is referencing, and his aesthetic. A child like you could not begin to fathom the depth of his brilliance if you are unwilling to open your eyes. “Anything is hard to find when you will not open your eyes.”

You have no taste if you don't like Morrissey's writing. Why don't you go read Stephen King or James Michener or something more suitable to your lameness.

Why did you buy Morrissey's autobiography in the first place? It's obvious that you don't care about him as an individual. Are you complaining about the man talking about his solo career in his own autobiography? It shows that you lack more knowledge on the subject, for example your opinion about the court case is completely absurd, that case is more complex than just responding in such a stupid and useless way as you have done by saying that mike joyce was broke and He asked for money and it was fair, ok thanks lawyer, and then the stupidest thing you have said about Morrissey's alleged racism is that your great source of information is Mojo! I guess Mojo is now the FBI for you. It's okay if you don't like this book, it's not easy to read and there will be parts of the book that disappoint you, but it's obvious that you already have a biased opinion about Morrissey, and therefore your knowledge about him will always be limited, please just stay with Smith's documentaries and forget about Morrissey's important solo career.
