"You know what's coming" LOOK I DID NOT THAT FINAL CONFLICT SCENE I ALMOST DIED 😭 And yes, I had this video bookmarked so I could come back and watch it after I read the book. I loooove the way Silvia's writing feels like novelas, I actually felt the same with Mexican Gothic. Also, her writing style is so lush, it makes me want to live in her stories forever, no wonder Sel read it 5 times 😂

Ooooh novelas a very formative part of my childhood and now as an adult I loved them more. Growing up watching them with my grandma and my mom makes me so nostalgic. Here in Venezuela, and as you said in many parts of the world, novelas are a national treasure.

ooff, listen. destilando amor? iconic. corazon salvage? beautiful. en el nombre del amor? maria la del barrio? maria isabela? fuego en la sangre? rebelde? el color de la pasion? rubi? lo que la vida me robo? those were all my favorite growing up. i'm mexican so i grew up with univision or telemundo always playing in the background. after dinner? straight to the living room to catch that evenings new episodes.

Thank you for this review. I read this book last weekend and really enjoyed it, although I had been disappointed that there wasn't enough fantasy to the book. I had been hoping the telekinetic powers would have played a bigger part. HOWEVER, now that I have context about the book and understand the inspiration for the book, I appreciate the story much more. Just because I had different expectations for a book doesn't mean that the book didn't do what it intended to do, which it did. It still would have been cool if Nina had used her powers to hit Valerie in the face with a book or something though.

I loved some o the author's previous books (Mexican Gothic and Gods of Jade and Shadow), and The Beautiful Ones did not really click with me. I think I have expected more fantastical elements, and was disappointed that the telekinesis took a big backseat. But after listening to your review, I will give it another chance, with more consideration for what the book was trying to do

If my mom is home and it’s 1pm she can’t be bothered. Days of Our Lives is on. I am named for a character on that soap she loves it so much. When I was little and out of school for the summer I would play Barbies in the front room while my mom watched Days. I can’t deny it influenced the drama in the lives of the dolls 😂 Also, YES. At this point I’ll read anything by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. She’s so good.

Lou, the country literally is named lkslgnlksnlgnlejdsbf 😭😭😭 it's Levrene! And yes to everything you said! Novelas are written in a way where you don't have to watch every episode in order to understand the plot. Basically, they're written in a way that you can turn on the tv and start watching the novela from any point. They do adhere to the hero's journey most times, but the middle chunk has a lot more things happening. THIS BOOK IS SO EFFING GOOOOOOOD! Great video, babe!

I've never been a novela fan but to watch them or not it's not really an option, right lol Most Globo novelas, I hate the repetitiveness of the plot and tackiness of the dialogues, it's just not my thing, but totally agree with what you said about working class escapism and cultural importance, there's no denying that. Also the fact that they always 99% of the time set in the Southeast and when they try to represent the Northeast or the North it's just terrible and I wish they didn't. Maybe that's why they never grew on me, I never saw myself or my family in the characters, their scenarios and daily struggles. BUT the good ones are so good, I remember O Clone, and freaking out about Avenida Brasil. The last episode was like an Oscar night, simpler times. I am super convinced to pick this one up though but maybe it's because you're a very convincing lawyer kkkksdkdkkj
