Even though Helene stood for an abusive system (and then thankfully helped dismantle said system) and I can see what she represented in the narrative I feel like all the setbacks that happened to her and all the deaths that surrounded her felt like the author punishing the character. It came to a point where all the deaths felt a bit personal between the author and the character instead of a necessary plot development.

To your point of Helene having no excuse to take so long understanding the Empires evil, whereas Elias figuring it out from book 1... I think the difference is that Elias was raised in the Tribes, whereas Helene has never known anything but the upper echelons of the Empire. She was so thoroughly indoctrinated her whole life, ithink it’s realistic that it took her so long. I agree that she’s not a good person. I think her perspective is interesting and essential to understanding the Martials. Also, to be fair, Marcus killed almost her whole family to force her hand , I can understand why to protect her last family member she would do whatever it takes. That was when I began to give a shit about her

So my story was that I was reading the last few parts in my sister's room and by the end I was ✨sobbing✨. What made it that much worse is that my sister was singing "As the World Caves In" by Matt Maltese and I- ... I didn't know how to cope so I was just sobbing harder. Our brother walked by her room and was just laughing at us hysterically, and our parents were just staring at us all judgmentally like "what have we created". Anyways, now whenever I hear the song I just break down into tears and it is safe to say that I have never cried so much at a book.

You saying the biggest plot twist is Elias and Laia being safe and happy is so true. Throughout the books, I really like the comparison of some kind of Helene and Elias. They say Elias is just GOOD like his father. He is an inherently good person and we see the struggle from the very beginning of his story. Then there is Helene who is so into the Empire and then has to stay completely faithful to the empire to save her sister and nephew. Mirra of Serra has the most interesting plot in this series because it’s so mysterious. Her coming back like that was an EPIC MOMENT.

My most favorite part of the book is when Laia is talking to the nightbringer and gives him a new name cause like- it’s so good! And then when Elias meets his father and his father asks him who he is. I just can’t with this series!!

This was so much better than reading the actual book! Was so delightful to see you laugh and cry alongside the book! I read the first three, loved them, but this one maybe just starts too slow?? It seemed really flat in comparison and I put it down at about 15% but now I at least know what happens to all my beloved characters! I even cried at one point at the ending bit, so good!

I hit a lull in the middle of the book but the ending for sure made up for it. My first thought was I want to re-read the whole series again because she incorporated so many little things from previous books that I forgot about into this one and it all made so much sense at the end. It was a 5 star read for me. I haven't read many series but it is now the gold standard for fantasy series. I was so sad when *spoiler alert* Harper and Darin died but them passing on gave me a feeling of closure. I also was getting frustrated because I wanted to know more about Keris. I felt like we got so much detail about so many other significant characters and we were promised more about her in the 3rd book. I thought Sabaa wasn't going to follow through. But she did and I was so excited. Having both villains be 3 dimensional and just everything else really made me love this series.
